    I actually recorded this match in its entirety back in 1981 on VHS. One of my favourite matches and got to know their games quite well from this encounter. Lendl went on to great things whereas Clerc seemed to fade away. Lendl had by far the better serve and I think that really helped his career. He could hold serve a lot easier.

      Lendl affirmait que Clerc jouait plus vite que Borg, mais commetait plus d'erreurs, après sa défaite face à l'argentin, en finale d'Indianapolis en août 81,3 semaines après sa finale perdue face au suédois en finale de Stuttgart

    Believe it or not these two were the first with brute force forehands. This is where power tennis started.

    With the much smaller sweet spots on these Raquet heads, the skills of these players as Ball hitters, would have to be of a higher level than today’s players with their massive raquet head sizes!!
    Don’t denigrate these Great players, many of these guy’s could happily mix it with today’s crop, and perhaps even the big 3 ??

      more precision- MAYBE - but very slow rhythm , less athleticism and less power . Nastase in his autobiography was comparing Federer Djokovic Nadal era with Borg Mcenroe Vilas Connors era and his playing days and is saying that in his palying days you could afford to go forward often as rythm was much slower with less power and atlheticism as well ; he found Borg incredibly hard hitter and powerful and he is also saying that the nowadays players are still very skilled with regard to precision

      @@andreasmissiroli6915 I played with those rackets back in the 80’s, there was Nothing slow about the game, particularly when you had to use different skill sets players do not posess nowadays.The game is now up to 15% faster, but it is less versatile and players do not run up to the net as often as we used to, that requires a very different set of skills. In terms of how hard we would hit the ball, we would hit it damn hard, perhaps harder than today’s players because the rackets were tougher and heavier too overall. If you ever tried that Rossignol stick Clerc used, or the Donnay Borg used, you would know., not to mention the reduced sweet spot challenge, and the preparedness to handle the the effects of such rackets on your arm muscles in a long match.

      @@The7dioses i Used to play with the Slzenger (Barazzutti, Mottram, Orantes had) and then with Donnay Borg. The game is nowadays aster - as you are saying- and in the same time you still need to adjust the strategy because it is not that they just play faster and harder ....they put together the strategy in the same time

      @@andreasmissiroli6915 A human being can only move up to a maximum certain speed due to kinetics, fisics and anatomy, whats the point of fabricating balls that are super fast, with slingshot tennis rackets, if it is humanly impossible to serve and volley anymore at the detriment of the variety of the sport? faster and faster does not always equate to improving something. If it takes away a great part of the essence of the game, it counter progression, it ruins it. If I want to watch super fast I will watch ping pong. They are making tennis a base player exclusive category. No more net players. They are gone like the dinosaur. It’s too bad because you actually needed even back in the day, to be extremely fast to be a net player, it was a special talent.

    • @andreasmissiroli6915
      @andreasmissiroli6915 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@The7dioses your opinion- and I got a different one . Players could serve and volley today - and it is not true that playing from the baseline and hitting hard ruins the game or it is a counter progression, not at all because nowadays players rally from the baseline,-they could attack the net if they wish , they still need the same strategies as in the past - it is more difficult to get the same shot precision, implementing the same tacticts and strategies while hitting harder and going faster, you dont need a master degree to understand that. And it is more exciting red clay with long rallies than grass or hard court serve and volley . Vilas, Borg, Wilander, Nadal, Djokovic are the players I used to I like to watch. federer is boring , Mc enroe was boring (but very precise with his angles). I rate tenacity , ferocious will to win at all costs more than than the so called technical ability

    Clerc was a very well rounded, hard hitting player. He was very promising, but he didn’t reach his full potential.
