For the two weeks or so we didn't have power we held many services and meetings by flashlight. Everyone brought a flashlight. His comments on society's inability to value the contribution of mothers through its capitalistic lens was spot on. For a woman who has devoted her entire life to the rearing of her children, only to find herself rejected at every turn for the simple lack of a CV and a money trail, says more about the society she lives in, rather than the value of her work, which is priceless.

Why would society, or mothers, need to value the contribution of mothers through a capitalistic lens? A family is its own society, and is far better equipped and experienced to judge the value of its mother's contribution than the arbitrary and impersonal "society" at large.
Most well functioning, taught, raised, prioritized, and loved families will be capable of supporting each other within a capitalist system.
If a system has to provide the value to mothers, they may not be suitable or effective mothers.

I think that men are profoundly appreciative of motherhood. When you don’t get the choice of being a parent or cannot have your own kids. You appreciate the people that can. I truly believe the devaluation of motherhood comes from people that have that choice and see it as a burden or interruption to their goals that do not aline with motherhood. Women learn their value from women not from men always has been always will be and women are devaluing motherhood and family care. We all need to value each other. Or “end of the world”.

From the time they are tiny girls are told to "lean in" and "you can do anything a man can do" and all the rest of it, while simultaneously hearing phrases like "just a mother" and "drudgery of housework", etc. GK Chesterton addressed this over 100 years ago when he said (paraphrase) that the feminists seem to believe that every man going to work was some head of state while in fact most of them were going to do drudgery outside of the house to feed those inside of the house. Having been home with kids for over 20 years, but working very hard before that, I can tell you for sure that while I still work hard, I have a lot more freedom than I did in the work world and more than any man does, too. Just try to hire a housekeeper/nanny/childcarer to see the cost of childcare. It's the reason women leave work to have children or just end up not having them or end up living in poverty - we cannot afford to pay for childcare out of our worker wages. The state school system is simply a badly-provisioned, awkward, inadequate free daycare system for working mothers. Any actual learning that goes on in school is incidental. Btw, I am both a mother and a worker (in the state school system). Men's wages are also inadequate to be the wage-earner of a household, so men have not been 'menning' for decades now. It's a lose/lose situation.

@@E_Clampus_Vitus Accurate. We haven't lived in a capitalist system for well over a century. Capitalism is meritocratic: it rewards good ideas and good practices, and it utilises fair and healthy competition as a means of determining which is which. But governments put in protections, restrictions and regulations which deliberately undermine competition and remove merit in favour of promoting and protecting their favourite oligarchs.

The vast majority of humans that have ever lived had no career, no money, no toys, most of this stuff has only existed for a blink. Why any of it would have anything to do with human fulfillment or satisfaction is beyond me. Relationships and experiences are all that truly matter. No one is on their deathbed thinking about their Rolex or their mansion, because by that point they've usually realized that shit just doesnt matter.

    • @Campingwilder

The kid-daycare Business/Industrial Complex has unfortunately been made an almost (deliberate) essential for so many families nowadays. I used to hate picking up my nephews from their daycare facilities when the places always felt like deliberately cold, cynical (and then creepy) bureaucratic, bare-minimum businesses, almost like they were MADE to turn the kids into institutionalised cogs early (like school often does later.....or like state run communism supposed 'care' does deliberately). I went to kindergarten when I was a kid and it was just an early preparation for school a year before, mostly run by nice/genuine volunteer mums to simply socialise and prepare kids rather than institutionalise them into easily dehumanised and self-fulfilling cog-in-the-machine cynicism .....and then an acceptance/normalisation of it.

Motherhood combines with capitalism via traditional monogamous marriage, by replacing the role of husband/father with a nanny state we have untethered the male and female psyche from each other thereby driving markets of overconsumption and speculation with no meaning behind them.
