$99 5W Stage Right Amp vs Vintage Silverface Champ.....Fair Match or Slaughter ??

  • There's been a lot of interest lately in extremely inexpensive "Champ-like" tube amplifiers currently appearing on the market. In this video, we'll take a closeup look at a $99 5W Stage Right amp from Monoprice.com. Every detail of its construction will be discussed and then its performance will be compared to a vintage Silverface Fender Champ amplifier, which shares a similar circuit. Regardless of your expectations, I think you'll be surprised and entertained by the outcome.
    NOTE: In the next week or so, I'll draw a name from my list of Patreon patrons and send them this brand new Stage Right amp absolutely free. After being advised by a viewer, I checked for a small bar code tag on the perimeter of the speaker magnet.....and found, in microscopic print, "Made in China". Apparently, the "Ipswich, England" on the large, Celestion sticker refers only to the location of the headquarters of the company. A bit misleading, but not misrepresentation.

    I've had a Silver face Princeton since I was 12, I'm 55 now. Thanks Dad. I never had a need or a want for a Champ. But in my opinion, what ever that's worth, the Champ obliterates the $99 amp. But you know somebody will buy the $99 amp and be real happy with it, and at the end of the day that's all that really matters. I started playing guitar in 6th grade, 1975. That Christmas my Dad bought me a Blonde Tele with a maple neck a MXR Distortion plus and a Univox amp. My Dad was a guitar player too. I'll never forget when he asked if I liked the new stuff I told him the Tele was amazing and I love the distortion plus. But the Univox sounds like crap! He laughed out loud. A month later I got A Princeton Reverb. R.I.P Dad, thanks for everything.

      Reading this comment made my day. My dad and I have become closer than ever by his interest and involvement in my music “career”. I’m 35 years old and have been gigging for 10+ years and 3 years ago or so he started coming to shows and helping us lug gear and he went from not knowing how to wrap a mic cord then to being our unofficial 5th member and running our FOH sound at every single show. He is more of a gear-nerd now than I ever was! We have so much fun doing this stuff every weekend and he’s actually become a pretty damn respectable sound guy! Anyway, thanks for sharing this. It reminds me not to take even a minute of this stuff for granted. God bless.

    The folks at Memphis Amps took the Stage Right amp, rewired it, installed 6V6 power and 12AY7 preamp tubes, a Weber Signature speaker, and sell them as the "Stage 5" amp. They are customized for the Harmonica's tonal range, and they get some fat, seriously great tone. And the little monster is loud enough to cut thru a band. I've never had to turn it up past halfway. They've also added a line out in the back. Best Harp amp I've ever owned.

      I would also like to hear the Stage Right through the vintage Fender speaker. The SR Celestion is obviously not broken in and may well be a cause of the harshness, The SR sounded fuller through your shop speaker. The Champ's separate bass and treble controls (in comparison to the SR's single tone control) may also contribute. I'd love to see you mod the SR to have the the same tone stack. For $99, this could be a good mod test bed, and add an effects loop for good measure.

      The comparison would have been more fair with a Stage Right with at least 10 hours of speaker training ....
      Anyway the old Fender champ is a champ , the Stage Right doesn't need any 12" cab , it sounds even better by itself ...But not right of the box , once it opens up it's a different story ...
      Its big brother , the 15 watts one , is a Fender blues jr killer ( with the same tubes , EL84 , marshallish ) , and the Blues Jr isn't a bad amp , not at all ..
      You can find some comparisons between them here , Stage Right = Monoprice = Harley Benton = i don't remember that one , in Australia i guess ....

    I got the 15w version for $157 shipped. It was slightly fizzy for my tastes & different tubes didn't fix it. The circuit is basically a Marshall JCM preamp, so it shouldn't be fizzy. I removed the bypass cap on the cold clipper first & added a bias switch for 10k, 5k, or 3k... It's amazing! Swapped the seventy80 for an Eminence Legend and it's got some of the sweetetest Marshally drive to stunning cleans. The bias mod gives it tons of headroom if needed, but overdrives to Fenderish crunch when pushed. All traces of fizz are gone and it's crunchy as kittly litter now.

      D'Lynn H. R27 is the 10k cathode bias resistor for the second gain stage. You can simply solder a wire with a resistor from the cathode socket pad to a switch to put it in parallel to R27. Other terminal on swutch goes to ground. The stock bypass cap is the lone black wire on plug HD3. Simply clip it to remove. I used a 5k resistor in parallel with the stock 10k for a 3.3k bias.

    I've got the most recent 15w 1x12" Stage Right combo amp from Monoprice that's a copy of the Laney Cub 12R. Monoprice is/started as an American-based company who sources their stuff from overseas. Based out of Cali. They're not like Wish or the other places as most people think they are.
    For $219, it's absolutely INCREDIBLE! I'm glad they do the "box in a box" trick. It ensures that my amp is protected well and makes it to me unscathed.
    Supposedly, Joe B likes to use the Celestion 70/80 speakers that are used in the 15w. That's the word around the internet. He likes stuff that's easy to source from anywhere. The 70/80 falls directly into that category.

Much of the bass limitation is a result of a small speaker, circuit design, inexpensive components, and cabinet size.

    Turns out these amps have wire tube hold downs on all the tubes - 3 12ax7's and 2 EL34's.
    The factory installed the hold downs with the metal wire in direct contact on the sides of the tubes.
    When the right tones get going and the cab starts to vibrate the wire hold downs transfer their vibrations into the amps circuit.
    So all i did was bend out the hold down connections at the tubes base so the hold downs do not contact the sides of the tubes.
    Problem resolved no more not so 'Good Vibrations'

    It might be interesting to see a cost comparison between building a Champ from scratch, and using the SR as a "kit"...rewire it PTP with better components.

    I'm almost shocked someone sent you a new amp just to make a video but some people get real upset when a cheap amp isn't taken as seriously as an icon. People are interesting. Great video. The A/B comparison puts the differences right there. I like those old Fender tones. You made that Champ growl properly! The other thing is a neat amp for practicing if you only have $99.

    Great video. The Champ shines through as the winner of overall tone, of course, but for $100, the little Chinesium amp is still pretty cool.
    I had a Bugera 5W/1W amp I obtained probably 5-6 years ago, bet it was the same circuit boards. It disappeared with one of my nephews, to whom I "loaned" it, never to be seen again.
    IIRC, I believe that Billy Gibbons actually used a Champ on a LOT of the studio versions of ZZ Top songs.
    Thumbs up.

      Ken Davis no it doesn't not what I heard it wasn't a true fair comparison they had the tone control to high up if it was turned back down to quarter of a turn! it would have had a warm feeling, plus the soundstage has more detail in its stage right the champ was muddy sounding and uninspiring.

      Ken Davis true depends what device you are listening it on?? I would have liked to have heard the champ and stageright played through his big speaker alternatively that would have given you the sense of what the actual amplifiers sounds like.

    • @UncleDoug
      @UncleDoug  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Perhaps, but the point was to compare the two amps on an equal, as-is basis......not with all possible combinations of cabinets, speakers, different tubes, etc. I will leave the modifications up to others to perform and hopefully document with videos.

    As far as what I hear in this video goes, to me the Champ doesn't sound better so much as different. If they were channels on an amp I'd like them both, but I also can't help but think that in person, the Champ would sound way better.

  • @bobboitt3126

    Im betting the stage right can match the Champ with NOS tubes, break in the speaker and roll off the treble a bit on the tone control. Great video. Something about an old 5f1 though that cant be beat.

    OK got this little amp, also the Monoprice cabinet with 12" Vintage-30 Celestion speaker. The amp is loud and harsh. Louder through the 12" open-back cab, but still harsh. Distortion pedal, fuzz, wah, all help, but when I swap the same setup over to my Fender Hotrod Deluxe everything sounds so much better. Also have the 15-Watt Monoprice amp - also quite harsh in sound. Am I doing something wrong? Not sure how these Monoprice amps fit into the big picture yet. Still hopeful.

    • @UncleDoug
      @UncleDoug  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You've got to experiment with your guitar output signal (tone, volume, pickup selection) as well as the tone controls on the amp, Doug.

    • @dougselsam5393
      @dougselsam5393 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Update: Soon after this previous post my Fender Hotrod Deluxe started sounding like crap. Probably needs new tubes or, who knows. I know it has issues like the main input was loose from the PCB and I had to use the secondary attenuated input. Hot spots visible on the PCB. It went from a great distortion without needing pedals to "forget it, don't bother".
      But then when I went back and started using the Monoprice 15 Watt amp, it started sounding fantastic. I was like - why did I think it sounded so harsh before and now it sounds better? Maybe my new Momoprice guitar?
      Oh and you may like the sound better using their 12" celestion Vintage 30 extension cabinet. But now the Monoprice again is sounding kind of harsh sometimes. Again, I'm thinking "new tubes?"
      THE LITTLE 5-WATT AMP: OK I play thru it sometimes. It is fun. Sounds great thru their 12" Celestion V-30 extension cabinet. The little amp does have a speaker-out jack. The main limitations are no reverb and no effects loop, so it is just raw. But the sound is very present. Not dull. Right in your ear. I play thru a tube screamer into it - not bad. Needs reverb. Needs an effects loop. MAYBE SOMEONE CAN TELL US HOW TO WIRE IN A REVERB TANK AND/OR EFFECTS LOOP - pleeease?

    I really liked this video Doug. I've been hearing allot about the SR amps. For the $ they seem great. I have a beat up 74 Sliverface and really like it better than any other amp I have tried. I just found another one that is in mint condition and the guy is the original owner. He even has the manuals. Can't wait to get that one. My current one was not well taken care of but works great after being serviced. Your Champ is absolutely mint and so nice. I haven't found anything that impresses me as much as the old Champ amps.
