When we visit France we notice a national focus unlike anywhere else. Supermarket products routinely labelled with the flag and the region. Clothes shops with the flag on products. Cars with the flag on the dashboard. Much national manufacturing available in shops. Local products sold widely. Go to a French rugby match and it is sold out. Noisy like a festival. Kids and women everywhere. A quality stadium even in ProD2. Affordable tickets and an expectation that national or local.Ftench players will play. It is just in the culture. As a British it leaves me sad at what we let go.

This is for sure a surprising point of view from outside our borders, because in France we mostly feel a loss of our culture and identity for american culture essentially. But I have to say, self-flagellation is our National Sport (far before striking yes). Because any form of pride is easily perceived as arrogance.

Vannes is the first team from Brittany to play in Top 14 (and not even the biggest city in Brittany)
not any Top 14 team is from the north side of France outside of Paris
you only have Nevers in Pro D2, and Rouen in 3rd division
the game is developping fast in these regions, because Top 14 is more and more popular everywhere + world cup 2023 here in france where stadiums in Lille and Lens were full

I know my team very well. I've been watching them play since 1978. I saw them in 3 WC finals that I didn't think they could win and they didn't. I saw them in 2 WCs that I thought they could win and they didn't (2003, 2007). I thought they were losing a bit of steam before and in the 2023 WC and they lost in 1/4.
All this being said, I think this is the first time in France rugby history that they have a real system meant to produce players and a team focused on winning games and competitions, including the WC. That doesn't mean they will win the WC. That just means they will be one of the teams that has what it takes to win it. I think France can keep this up for a long time so possibly they will regularly show up in WCs as one of the team that can win it and who knows, maybe one day ....

Losing to SA in 2023 was heartbreaking, but the SAs bench made the difference, + a couple of errors, like Ramos taking way too long to kick so Kolbé managed to block him. And the gap he left in the 1st half that resulted in a SAs try. France even though they are fantastic lack this little thing that makes a difference. We shall see in the next wc if they managed to get to the next level. But as a French fan of that team I am delighted by the games they offer. Allez les bleus damn it!

As a French, rugby lover from the father to the son, I follow the rugby since early 70’s, but I really need to say I’m not trusting anymore the IRB, i guess now it’s called World Rugby, all is setup for an Anglo Saxon dominance, starting with the referees, for me, in the last World Cup, south Africa was meant to win, and France was not the only victim by the way, New Zealand was also. Then, to my concern, in the current state of the international rugby institutions, France will never have a chance to win, no matter what team we got. And most of the French rugby supporters are thinking the same.
I am supporting a secession from the present international institutions, and the creation of another international system.

Galthier could engage up to 42 players during that period at each international period, he had a lot of support and he only won the 6 nations once and felt to win the world cup.

They were brilliant on the day but they were beaten by a better team not by the ref. Great teams don't point fingers at everyone else, they focus on what they can do better. France didn't take all the chances available to them and made costly errors like the Jalibert kick. They are an excellent side but constantly blaming refs and rugby boards won't make them any better.

As a South African I have witnessed many times where South Africa was hard done by referees as well, the Bryce Lawrence game against Australia is one and the Owen Farrell tackle on Esterhuizen is another that springs to mind. So I don't think it's a case of world rugby purposefully having something against France because all teams get the short end of the stick every now and then.

Once the top stars get the same rest afforded to the Irish stars, France will be able to up the intensity and deploy its full power. In the meantime, they'll always have that disadvantage . The staff is trying to manage that, hence why we send second and third teams on the June tour. It's good for depth. But we really need to take that Top14 step next.

So let's to the point here why France has a very good chance of winning the next world cup, but they have a VERY VERY VERY big deficiency which they have to contend with - they have time to do it but I will explain this later. So many people ask me why I have a french name but am from South Africa. Everywhere i go around the world I introduce myself as Francois but they think I'm French. So here is my French lineage and why they are my second favourite side besides the Bokke.
I am not digressing here but let me explain why I love the frog side after the Bokke. my background with a French name as a South African, Francois (the rest of the world does not understand this), (besides the frogs) and they (the rest of the world) always ask me about it. And all you frogs will love this. I am digressing now which all my friends rip me off about but it's interesting. I am a fourteenth generation SA boy with French Descent, from the French Huguenots which had to come out as French Huguenots when the Catholic Protestant 30 war raged in the middle of the 1600's and we (protestants) (probably the worst war Europe ever had) fled to the Netherlands to escape prosecution, which in turn shipped us all out to the Cape to populate the country because they simply had nothing to do with us (we were basically illegal immigrants) The DEIC (Dutch East India Company), ruled the world then, and we were for a lack of understanding we were slaves in the modern context of the word, but the Dutch gave the French Huguenots a very good deal, work for the state (DEIC) for three years and you became a "vry burger" which means a free slave. We weren't whipped or treated as slaves and all that shit, don't get me wrong, but after three years we were naturalised as Dutch citizens, to pay for the passage from Netherlands, but we had to plant the "cabbage patches' to stop the Dutch sailors from dying from scurvy, on their way to India. It's all in the French Huguenot monument in Paarl and Stellenbosch in the Cape, I have the family tree from 1688, and could actually trace it all back at the museum? Can you believe that? After 350 years? So don't think of Cape Town as it is today, 350 years ago it was a barren landscape, with hostilities all around from animals and the locals, so next time you go to Cape Town think of it as a "cabbage patch". In fact, the guy who landed there first to claim it as Dutch territory from the Portuguese, (they had already taken Angola and Mozambique 150 years before us), Jan Van Riebeeck, hated the Cape, he was demoted by the Dutch and send to Cape Town to start a "cabbage patch", to get him back into the political elite in Amsterdam as such. (Imagine his poor wife, she must have had a temper tantrum). He left back to the Netherlands soon after that. (She must have been very happy).
Anyway, besides me not speaking a word of French, there is my reason for loving the frogs. Good reason, I think. After the Bokke they are my second favourite side.
So why the frogs for winning the next world cup.
1 Their under 20 side is unbelievable - they have not "just won" the last three tournaments but absolutely bullied it. They have so many players coming thru, look at LLB, he's a kid and the second-best wing in world rugby after Cheslin , and these players are coming thru. NZ is falling way behind here, the ABs are already slipping here and considering the frogs have beaten the AB's in their last three tests, is a major worry for the Kiwis. The AB's always dominated these under twenty tournament's, late 2000's, and going into the 2010's, which is why they were so successful. Those days are gone for the AB's. WE not doing much better. This is a very good sign for northern hemisphere rugby, and in particular the frogs. They are staring to produce some freaks. Just look at LLB, that lock they have and Penaud. Du Pont and Ntamack. They all came thru this system. With these four players alone, they could become unbeatable soon.
2 The structure of their rugby in France is unbelievable, they feeder system is brilliant with their academy system, they have signed up Grey Bloem, - probably the best schoolboy rugby side in the world, and ten of their players in any side has to be a frog. This is a world leader and the benefits from this will be unbelievable. SA also does this, but not too this level. Rassie has to get this right in SA.
3 You will see so many young frogs coming thru the system in the next three years, but as the French always say after they lose a game "because we are French???". BMT a major problem with the frogs.
Reasons why they could lose the next world cup.
1 Referring in Australia and NZ. We all saw what happened in the world cup in 2011. Paddy O Brein absolutely ridiculed that world cup when he was in charge of the refs. AB's had not won a world cup for 24 years, and they were desperate. Look what happened in the final when the French dominated the last twenty minutes, without a penalty against the AB, s. Lying all over the ball? They also kicked us (BOKKE) out with Bryce Lawrence against the Aussie's and the way they refred that brilliant Welsh side with Warburton (Wales were on fire then) out of the tournament. Come on AB's. That was disgrace. The AB's should never have won that world cup. In fact, its disgrace, for the sake of rugby don't do that with the Aussies again just because you are hosting the next world cup. Please don't demean the next world cup. We know the Aussies are criminals but not you?
PS Stop complain about 1995 with Suzie and food poisoning. It's all BS. Just for the record Kitch Cristie coached that world cup wining side He won all 15 teats as coach, 100% record. never lost a test until he resigned when he got cancer and died. (only international coach in the world to do this) Have some respect. We (Bokke) were unbeaten for two years. So, stop all the BS.
2 Lack of depth. Now you will say I am contradicting myself, with all their under twenty players. But you take LLB, Penaud, and du Pont, Ramos, and Ntamack out the backline and you have nothing. Develop replacements to come in, otherwise you will lose. You have the under twenty players, Rassie revolutionised this with the bomb squad. Mallet started this in the late 1900's when we got the then world record with 17 teats in a row? Unfortunately, the SA public did not take to his system, and he got nailed by the press. The frogs have the players to do this. Get two international sides like the Boks have, play any of those two-teams on any given Saturday, and win. if world rugby and the frogs can't do this they will lose. Rugby is not about 15 players anymore, its 30 players plus the bomb squad.

    • @xguilbert
      @xguilbert 2 วันที่ผ่านมา +5

I disagree with your comment on the lack of depth of the French team, the most recent victory against the ABs being a good counterpoint. see also the "Development Teams" of the Summer tests (casting aside the major behavior issues outside the field of last year's), there are plenty of very good players that can step in and fit in the system that has been put in place under Galthié. the fact that he tends to go for the regulars when they are available doesn't mean the team is lacking in depth. case in point, 2Cents' recent depth analysis has shown that Galthié has tested more players than any other team in the 6N in 2024. comparatively, I think the way that Andy Farrell has handled Ireland (with not obvious option to replace Sexton over the last few years) was way more concerning in my opinion.

No France will never win the World Cup.
South Africa - France 1995: France, the favourite, was ultra-dominant during the match. But the referee received a gold watch from the president of the South African rugby federation (true story!). The South African try scorer admitted in his autobiography that he had never scored the try that the referee had validated. 4 tries were disallowed for the French, while 3 were indisputably disallowed.
New Zealand - France 2011 : R. McCaw deliberately knocked out M. Parra with his foot and knee. He had to take a red card, but the referee did not look back at the slow motion. About ten fouls not called during the last 10 minutes in the rucks while the French dominated the Blacks. Reactions from the international media to this stolen final, including the Daily Mail and the Telegraph.
South Africa - France 2023: should we really talk about it again...

To win the WC you need more than just 15 players. The toll on players operating at this level requires depth to manage the physical impact. The margins within the game when multiple nations are on form are small. Having depth not only helps players recover and decreases the physical impact on their bodies, but keeps the opposition guessing as to the team they are going to play against. France will be a contender in 27, but to win requires depth, belief and passion to push them though those mental barriers.

No, this team is not scary. And no, this team will not win the world cup in 2027. Anyone putting money on them to win in 2027 is sure to lose money. This is not a talent issue, but an experience issue; the French simply are not a touring side and they will be massacred as soon as they set foot on Australian soil in 2027.
They are formidable in front of their own crowds, in their own corner of the world. Travel anywhere further than you can fly in a two seater Cessna, and this French team falls apart like the paper tiger it is.
    - have only won one six nations since 2011
    - have not featured in a world cup semi since 2011
    - doesn't ever send their best players on tours to the Southern Hemisphere
    - Couldn't even make the semi's of their own world cup

      @08padam 2 วันที่ผ่านมา +8

They toured to Australia with their C team and nearly won the series, and won the series in Argentina this year with a pool of unexperienced players. And winning away in Dublin is much harder nowadays than winning in NZ (ask the Boks, didn't win there in more than 10 years, while Argentina won twice in NZ recently). People talk as if touring in England or Ireland was easy. France inflicted England's biggest defeat at Twickenham ever. They might not win in 2027 as so many team have what it takes to win it, but people can't discard them. They should have win it in 2011 without a dodgy ref, with a much weaker side, on NZ soil.
But you are right about experience, their team was really young in 2023, and 4 years later they will be much better and hardened.
And looking forward, Top14 is the only league actually making money, while Welsh, English, Australian and NZ club/provinces are slowly dying. Australia used to be a rugby powerhouse, look at them now. Look at Wales now... If NZ do not fix their rugby domestic league, they will slowly but surely collapse. It happened to France in the 2010, their domestic league was broken and as a result so was the national team.
Their true weakness might still be the Top14 though, as players have to play 26 games + champions cup + Top14 finals, with most of the best clubs in the world (France won 7/8 of the last Champions/Challenge cup trophies). In contrast, Super rugby is 14 games a year per team (that's more than 3 month less of rugby, allowing players to rest). URC is 18 games per team + Champions Cup, that's 2 month less of competition. Add to that the fact that only Top 14 has relegation, meaning that lower ranked teams actually play every game as if it was the last, making every game much harder to handle for the body. It's much harder for a French Player to stay fit passed 30, compared to SH players playing in Japan or Super Rugby. But if SH rugby doesn't fix their domestic league, they will most likely collapse

@08padam I'm not saying France doesn't have the talent; they absolutely do.
You touched on the Top 14 and how good a league it is; absolutely it is, but it is also the reason why under this system, France will not be as good a test team as they can be.
There is a world of a difference between a 30 minute flight to London to play in Twickenham and actually flying for 14 hours to get to Sydney, dealing with jetlag, dealing with the culture shock and then getting used to the temperature.
This is the very reason why a test as esteemed as the French have underperformed so badly at the major events - sure, they can play their brand of rugby close to home, but for a few weeks away, can they keep it up? The answer this far is no.
Unless the French recognise the value in sending your best players abroad to do the hard grafting and unless these players are used to the conditions of the country they play in, they simply will not be successful in the alien landscape that is Australia.
