I plan to build an aviary like yours ... that is my dreams when I move into my retirement home... I'll to be able to seat and enjoy them and have them outdoors in a natural environment.
Hello sir! I like your aviary idea. also I enjoyed your birds and theyre singing. Im alos a bird lover but I like African love birds. I soon be doing my aviary in the philip[pines where my home at. mIm here abroad to work I missed my birds and by sharing your video its fun.
That's very relaxing to watch. I'm sure that actually being there is even better. It's nice to see someone who likes nature and animals that much. It must be nice to live in a place where you can have an outdoor aviary, especially one of that size. Nice work and nice video!
I'm glad you were able to watch my birds and have it make you feel better! Good luck with your aviary and I hope you are not away from your birds for long!
Thanks for commenting on my vid. It is a great place to just sit and relax in the afternoons in the hanging chairs. Built it around 10 years ago and have never regretted it! Peace!
I wish they would pass a law-no aviary -then no birds allowed. I think this a great example to show everyone with birds. Thanks for sharing your wonderful aviary.
that is soooo cool im working on building a small aviary for my living room i hope to get a bigger bird soon going to do my home work first!!! and it is cool that you had a bird since 1981 thats when i was born!
Very nice! Looks like your birds really enjoy it! I have a question for you... The wire you used to cover the sides of your aviary, what size wire is it? ( the squares in the wire) Also where can I find this wire? Thanks for your time and for posting the video, Brad
Thanks for stopping by! I watched a few of your vids and subbed to your channel. I hope some day you will be able to get the property you'd like and hopefully find someone who could watch after things so you could actually get away for a vacation! I can totally relate to that problem. I've had many of my birds for over 11 years now and have not been able to get away for long. Peace to you! Willie
Well actually there are lots of places I would like to go... I used to be quite the traveler in my youth, but with all the animals we have... it is hard to get away! But if you have to be stuck somewhere this is not too bad of a place to be!! Ha! Remember... careful what you wish for! Glad you enjoyed the visit! Peace!
Thanks! Not too cold. It's pretty mild here in Florida. We had one night down to around 36 degrees F. If it get very cold, we have a large enclosed room where we set up cages and bring the birds in. We do the same for hurricanes. Peace! Willie
But in the out door aviary they get a lot of exercise Mine have always like to eat and pick out their favorites. I give them fruits and veggies, Raw and cooked, depending on what we are eating usually. I also have greens for the iguanas and often the birds will go down to their food a pick through it and visa versa! If they see you eating it they are usually interested in trying some! Good luck, Willie
Yes, you hear right! We have about 6 nandays in the aviary. Also we have a variety of amazons, two other conures, a blue and gold macaw and a ringneck dove.
Yes a very large cage in our back yard! The neighbors have never complained in the 12 years since I started it. Most say they like the tropical sounds. (thank goodness for air-conditioning and closed windows! Ha! We are down here in sunny Florida!
@TarynBirdWoman Hey Taryn! Good to hear from you again. I started off just thinking a lot about how I wanted it to set in my yard and then outlined the shape I wanted. I used 12 foot 4x4 Pressure treated for my posts. Doug holes and set a foot and a half in concrete and that left 10 1/2 feet above ground... plenty of room for flying. I tied the posts together at the top with pressure treated 2x6's.
this is a very nice aviary! you did great. i hope to have an aviary after i have my own place later down the road...just a quick question...how many birds do you have in your aviary? keep making those awesome animals happy!
Yes! I also live here in Pinellas County. I did have to bring a few of them in when we had that few days it got into the 30's but most of they time they just hang out side unless we have a hurricane! Then I bring all of them in! Our cats have always appreciated to bite of our birds and have really not paid a lot of attention to them. The two youngest cats I still keep an eye on if they are around a lose bird. They haven't been bit yet! They never bother the macaw!! (Smart cats)
@Imonetone Well thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed your visit to my aviary. How's the weather been up there in the north? I hope your feathered friends are all doing well! Peace!
I'm not an expert at breeding birds but a place to nest seemed to be what got mine started. I built nest boxes. They took it from there. I think that budgies have blue across the top of their beak and pink or fleshy color for the females. Hope this helps.
Amazing!! Are all these your pets or do you rescue these?? I wish the weather in mo. would allow for something like this I would LOVE to have this but right now i have parakeets and finches! BEAUTIFUL love it!
I'm now using IPE also known as ironwood for anything inside that the birds can get to. It is very expensive but all natural and so hard I've never seen the birds chew on it. You have to pre-drill holes for the nails to go through or they will just bend. I know that wasn't a detailed list but If you need more info let me know!
I noticed you fed a squirrel and then I saw some others running around on top of the aviary. If they are like squirrels in Missouri, they can gnaw through practically anything to get bird seed. Do they cause damage to the facility?
Some are our pets that we purchased for the aviary 10 years ago, some were born in the aviary and others were given to us to provide a home for. One I bought in 1981 when she was a year old... or at least that was what I was told. Yes, it would be a bit cold for Parrots during the winter. Parakeets and finches would be better for indoors... not as loud! Ha! Peace! Willie
Hey! thanks for asking:) we built it in the backyard ontop of concrete slab. It is made out of pressure treated wood cause that was all we could find, and we built a roof out of shingles. It very strong and it looks beautiful. I put 2 hanging flower baskets in the front and lots of branches for them and a bird bath. It is approx, 8' x 8' x 9', not as big as yours, but its good enough for 3 cockatiels. It cost approx $700
Thanks! As I recall I spent about two weeks on each stage. The first thing that was built was the pond 11 years ago and that took a few days. Then I built the first half of the aviary a year later. When we were getting a blue and gold macaw we decided to expand it a couple of years after that to it's current size. The aviary netting (wire) was the most expensive part. At the time it was around a thousand for the whole aviary. Probably a lot more now. Peace!
There are blue front Amazons, yellow napes amazons, a red lored amazon, a handicapped blue and gold macaw, some red lored/yellow nape hybrids, which you may be thinking are the yellow fronted amazons (we don't have any of those), a mexican conure and a sun conure. We also have some old world birds but they don't live or visit the outdoor aviary. Thanks for the visit and comment!
Great job on this avairy. Looks like it's large & has it's own water features. Your birds look very happy. Any problems with snakes or other critters with an outdoor avairy?

Thanks for visiting and the comment! We have 20 parrots right now and 15 to 17 of them spend either all or part of their time in the aviary. Good luck to you and your aviary in the future! Willie
I remember that there was an awful lot of thinking about how to lay it out and how I was going to put the top on. I ended up deciding the easiest was to just make the top flat at 10 and a half feet. But I did an awful lot of just walking around looking at the area and thinking about the project. I didn't rush it and when I felt pretty sure that is when I began.I used pressure treated 4x4's on the outside so the birds would be inclined to chew on them and on the inside...
Thank you! Built it around 10 years ago and it has been a great learning experience, educational. I've even brought some of my classes here on fieldtrips! Thanks for the comment! Willie
There are many that stop by. I have raised 4 or five by hand and they are friendly regulars to the aviary, then there are another few that have gotten used to me and will take peanuts by hand. Most are to nervous and wait till I move away from the feeder.(Peanuts corn and sunflower)
Mostly amazons(13) and conures(6), one B&G macaw and a ringneck dove. Non-birds, one 17 y/o green iguana, 9 red eared sliders in the ponds, mosquito fish, gold fish, & Crayfish.
yeah thanks for raply Sir. With my own two hands, I came up with the plan by walking around the area I planned to build it for a couple of weeks until it seemed clear in my head what I wanted to do. Then I started and adapted my plan to the reality of actually building it as I went. Of course after having built it there are things that I have been changing and would do differently after going through the experience. Thanks! The only animals that get in actually live under the rocks in the pond are the rats. I bring the food in every night because of them. They have never messed with the birds that I know of but the birds have chased them if they are out in the day time. Occasionally Squirrels get in and eat the food. I usually can find where and close it.

Wonderful! You have created a fabulous place for your parrots, they are lucky to have found you!
Wonderful video! I love the outdoor aviary. We are hoping one day to build one for our parrots. It's wonderful seeing the birds enjoying it so.

great plase!!How cold does it get in winter, and do you have any problem with the weather??
Glad you enjoyed it! Just came in from out there... maybe I need to post a new vid of the aviary... ??

Definitely do your homework and remember and can be a life long commitment!

Thanks! And thank you for taking the time to let me know! Peace!
@mysteryglo Yes my birds have it pretty good. We just had a lost hungry cockatiel come visit and we are trying to find a home for now. The wild conures will sometimes come visit us also. Never a dull moment around here.

Yes, he loves to play throw the ball! They are both great dogs and they get along with all the squirrels, but they don't like rats!
If those are the only two birds, I'd just give it some time, but make sure that there is enough space for her to get away if she wants. Don't want any injuries. Are they in a new cage? If he is being put into her cage, she may feel like he is invading her territory. Both into an unfamiliar cage may make a difference. Let me know how it goes!

Oops looks like I missed your post by 10 months! It is pretty amazing and peaceful when they are resting in the afternoon! Thanks for leaving a comment! And sorry for taking so long to respond!
nice I love it!
Yes, we spend some time each evening in the hanging sky chairs feeding the birds and relaxing! Just came in from cleaning their bowls and filling them up for tomorrow morning.
Hey dude! Can I ask - what materials have you used to build this aviary? I'm about to build a large walk-through one myself, and wondering what the best materials are? Any tips? :)
Sorry I didn't get to you quicker. Definitely true one of the preservatives is poison arsenic, one of the reasons that they stopped using it in playground equipment! I doubt that cockatiels have enough beak power to chew it very much still I'd make sure there was a lot of other wood that they would prefer to chew.
Thanks Glad you enjoyed your visit! Thinking about a high def remake of this vid soon! Enjoy the weekend!
Peace!
Willie
Will that be soon?? I just came in from feeding my birds their evening snacks. I wish I could retire soon but I have to keep working to feed all my animal friends! Ha!
Peace my friend!
Willie
I want to build an aviary for my precious lovely cocatiels I am woundering if you can give me information on how you built your aviary, thanks
Thanks! Happy to wow you!
Peace!
I've been replacing the wood with more expensive longer lasting wood as the untreated wood from the top wears out. It's 11 years old now and the non pressure treated wood is decaying. The main supports 4x4x12 ft are PT, set in concrete and are holding up nicely.
Peace!
Thanks! Just got in from giving them all their before bed snacks!
Peace!
@shantee4 We love to share our aviary and youtube is a great way to do it! Thanks for leaving a comment! Do you know Kevin or just a fan? I remember seeing him on Idol.

Thanks for the visit and comment!

Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for leaving a comment!
The longest dimensions are 33 feet by 44 feet and about 10.5 feet tall. They seem to enjoy flying a lot. I'll check! Thanks for the comment!
Peace!
@b64lrm It's a good feeling, hope you enjoyed your visit!
