I love the fact that you are exploring a new method, and are trying things out. I recently decided that I would try new (to me) methods, and it’s totally reinvigorated my passion for fishing.
You fished for big perch totally wrong but an enjoyable watch all the same. Where to start. Carp waters are good because the small fish are neglected and they often contain big perch. Locating them you first look for structure, reeds, branches in the water from where they can ambush prey, big fish can sit right in the edge too. Look for small fry topping, the perch are often near their food source like pike and they often feed on smaller fish. You can bait up near their structure or alternatively attract small bait fish in with groundbait, maggots and the big perch notice the activity and move in on them. To catch fish over 2lb you do indeed need to up your hook size to a 10 of 8. Fish whole lobs hooked in the saddle but fish whole prawns except hooked completely differently to your method. You put the barb in the blunt end and feed the prawn around the hook which naturally follows the prawn shape, expose the hook point inside the curl of the prawn. They feel nothing then when they pick the bait up but believe me the hook goes home just fine. I have caught numerous at 2lb plus on prawn and worm, many 3’s with a PB of over 4lb. I use a match rod rather than a pole. 4lb line is fine. I have even caught as many following a bait down on the drop and free lining as I have on float or ledger. I hope these tips are useful to someone.
Happy New Year Jamie! All the best, and I look forward to watching more of your brilliant videos, that help me feel like I am there fishing too (I live in Sydney Australia but try to get some sessions in each time I am over in the UK visiting family). Cheers.
Caught my two best perch of 5lb.9oz and 5lb 1oz on king prawns soaked in predator plus which turn them bright right,,just loose fed maggots to attract silvers
I don't know why you're so surprised about how successful prawns are. Where I fish they're probably the most popular bait. They'll catch anything, carp love them as do big roach and of course perch. I'd never fish as fine as you were though, a whole prawn threaded onto a size 6 or 4 hook would be my choice. You can still catch roach like that but for big perch they're a necessity. I've had loads of 2lb plus perch like that, my best a 3•5lb one. By the way cockles, not ones in vinigar, are also a great bait for rudd and roach and big carp really love mussels and these are all instantly available as you can freeze them. Give them a try. Enjoyed the video.
i use prawns regular. the best 2 days consecutive was candy corner 3 years ago . i fished prawn over micro both days and had 600 pound of carp . best 2 days ive ever had
i really like your videos jamie, how you go through the process of what you do, also the live matches, you seem a genuine nice bloke! am looking forward to more videos, happy new year to you :)
For perch, especially the larger perch you are targeting, I would like start with a size 8 or even 6 hook, with the prawn on the hook itself. Of course I fish for wild perch he in the US, when we normally would only use a size 14 while fly fishing for trout!
Happy new year Jamie - There's some big perch in Laurels too - had 'em to 2-12 last season. Looking forward to the netting video to see what size the perch go to in Strip
Having had a few sessions after the perch this year, al my fish have been caught on whole, raw, king prawn on a size 10 wide gape hook. Had them to just over 3lb but I am sure there are far bigger in there so I very much look forwards to your netting video! Happy New Year!!
HNY! I enjoyed that a lot. Been thinking about a go myself. As I would love to catch a big perch on the prawn! All the best and have a great 2024. 🐳 🍤 👍
Haha, what drives us fishermen to use sea food to catch fish, I think the most exotic bait I used was bright red hawthorn berries on a hair rig. Happy new year buddy.
Jamie, did you in the Margins I the lake where I fish? A lot of the perch are caught very close to the near the bank in some times almost touching the bank in no more then 2 foot of water
Well done Jamie, yes i did enjoyed it, that was a very good day's fishing, looking forward to the video of the netting of the lake, Happy new year, Thank you,
Happy New year Jamie think the only problem you had there was there's too many fish to catch before you find the big perch think you need a different venue
Take it easy, matey! Its hard to listen because you're huffin and puffin and foolin as hurry all the time. Lots of details but relax man ! I cant bear to listen, you sounds lika hekkuva rush and your ass on fire. Relax, relax...!

i use prawns a lot on the waters near me killer bait
I catch a lot of carp with prawns
Nothing new prawns are a good bait especially for chub been using them years try Brazil nuts for carp
I hardly use anything other than prawns.
Really? What are the main species you catch with them?
@CatchFishingChannel Tench are always my target, but carp and perch love them too.
Stops the tiddlers, and anything you get is usually a decent size.
Would have preferred to see a rod .
I'll do that next time Gerald :)
