    I just started my van build and it is so over whelming. I've been watching your videos non stop for days now trying to decide how/what to do. I'm so impressed with not just your work, but you're entire attitude. I'm 68 years old, a semi disabled Vet and am discovering this trip is helping me cope with my problems. Of course I don't have the budget that you have, so it's just a few hundred bucks a month into the van build. But it's giving me hope. Thanks so much.

      @jhart3983 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi. Since you are a vet, I'm wondering if there is any place (eg. Non-profit) that could help or sponsor you? If not, perhaps you could set up a Go Fund Me and ask people to help. If you feel comfortable you could briefly tell your story and explain what it could mean for you to have a van. You deserve it!

    I can't tell you how many hours (seemingly endless) of video "research" I have done in an effort to convert my shuttle bus, but your videos have provided some of the best content and insight. If your not afraid to fail, you can do almost anything in life, which you have repeatedly demonstrated. You have become a teacher without knowing it. Thanks for sharing your experience.

    I think you are doing a Great job !! #1 you use stranded wire because it is flexible, you can solder it, and crimp end and correctors (solid wiring you can't do any of the thing that you can do with stranded wire ) # 2 DC is electric power in one direction only ( think of it as you are only pulling or pushing but not both) # 3 AC is electric power that the current being pushing for 1/120 of a second and pulled the next 1/120 of a second that is why it is called 60 cycle. The reason for AC is it is the best way to move current (current is the amount of energy being used) # 4 all current is measured amperes ( think of amperes same as gallons is to liquid) # 5 Series wiring is like the cheap Christmas light ( 1 bulb going bad and all stop working) think of it as you and your friends sharing a beer you take the first drink and pass it to your friend that take a drink and pass it to next friend who take a drink and pass it to the next friend who take a drink that is drinking in series. # 6 Parallel wiring is now like you and your friend drinking beer but this time everyone get there only beer can and can drink sum of the beer or all of the beer. Note I'm a slow at typing I stoping. But I want to tell you that I was born in Provo , Utah ( I was raised in Florida ( the same town that Brain Johnson from AC-DC lives) I hope this helps you keep up the good work.

      Hi John! I appreciate your comments so much. Thank you for the analogy about the beer - I will definitely be using that in a later video! (Of course I will give you the credit!) I appreciate the time you spent to include so much information. I will be referring back to this comment for reminders :) Thank you, have a wonderful week!

    I finished my Maxx fan install. I'm 70, and happy to see another woman not afraid to use power tools. You video was so helpful! I watched it many times before finally getting the courage to cut a hole in my roof. My only difficulty was cutting the roof...I thought it was going to be thick... Wrong blade. Finally changed to a very fine tooth and the vibrations were minimal. I was shocked at how flimsy the roof was! I bought the expensive butyl, and was so glad. Your simplicity saved so much time and unnecessary steps .. Like making a frame on the inside... Not needed at all! I'm so excited to get on the road and try my new fan!
    I was the first female builder in my large city in the early 90s... Tough times and many battles breaking into the trade. You go girl!

    Hey, the reason for parallel when wiring 12v lights is because you need to keep the voltage at 12v to match up with your battery! Parallel wiring makes the amps go up but voltage stays the same. Cheers!

    • @ianlaccohee7180
      @ianlaccohee7180 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is true for batteries but not for lights. Lights are wired in parallel to minimize voltage drop.

    FYI, if you don’t or can’t get rubber grummets, you can use car vacuum or ice hose tubing. Vehicle vibrating does cut wires. If no fire, defiantly future headaches. Also landscape lighting wire is a great cheap alternative.

    Nice job! Wiring is simple in theory and complex in practice because of all the choices. In AC I always check the breaker bc they have a minimum Guage/current that effects throwing them off. If a short in a circuit can't through the breaker it might start a fire. I don't know if silicone effects rubber life.

  • @michaelrs8010
    @michaelrs8010 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Been watching some of your videos, you got some good skills for sure. 👍
    One thing I plan on doing with my van build is running my electrical, as much as practical, through conduit on the OUTSIDE of my walls. I don't think this will look bad or two "Industrial", particularly if you blend a conduit into the wall with paint or some such and run it along areas where counters or cabinets meet the wall. Or even midway up the wall if you like.
    Then you just build a little box to attach to the wall that would hold whatever switches or electrical plugs where you need them.
    The reason I'm doing this is I think it would be much simpler than having to precisely measure things from behind a wall and cut the appropriate holes in the exact places in the wall. Plus it think it makes it a lot easier to expand or otherwise change the system, such as dropping in another electrical plug somewhere where you maybe didn't think you needed one before, if you don't have to get behind your walls for the wiring.
    Anyway, great job. Really admire your skills and ability to be flexible and change.
    If you would like some ideas from another great build series, might want to check out Humble Road here on TH-cam. The guy is pretty cool. Maybe he over engineers a little bit, but it's pretty interesting too.

    I'm wondering if you have any extra footage from when you hooked up your refrigerator? Or any other items besides the lights (already watched that one). Your channel explains everything soooo well and I've learned a lot from you, but not sure about how to finish up the wiring.

    I am enjoying your van build as I'm doing one as well. I can build things and have no problem with the power tools, etc. My brain goes away when I think about electricity and power so, can you tell me which batteries you are going with. My build and power usage is much the same as yours. Hugs and a belly rub to Akela!

    You are amazing! You are doing great, although you have no experience in this field. I've been watching you since the first episode, and I like the relaxed style in which you talk about every thing you do, I like the enthusiasm and positive energy you convey. I now change my van in the camper van, and I know how many things change along the way, and how frustrating it is sometimes to undo everything and start over.
    And i love your dog :)

    Stranded wire is ok for things that need to move like small appliances or phone chargers, but solid gauge wire has it’s use for wiring that won’t move very often. Solid gauge is superior for anything wired through a wall because it’s more stable, conducts better, makes less heat, and lasts longer. Solid is slightly cheaper as well.

      I have been told by a few van builders that they strictly use stranded! I'm sure the debate will always continue though haha

      @@Linneaandakela I don't see you using a table saw or a handheld circular saw.
      You seem to be using mainly a jigsaw for all cutting.
      I want to avoid using a table saw and a handheld circular saw even if smaller because they scare me.

    Your Vids are awesome. I have been wanting to do this for about 10 years now and with Covid I recently was laid off. So I am really putting a lot more thought into it. Thank you very much for the detailed videos. I think your mistakes are worth postings as well as maybe we can learn from them as well.

    You honestly have hands down the best videos to follow along with. Thank you! I was wondering with the 12/2 wire, how do you know which cable is which because they're both black. I just bought some and am so confused.

    • @Linneaandakela
      @Linneaandakela  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Such a good question! I just assigned one of the sides positive and the other negative - one side is usually somewhat different. For example, on of the wires on my 12/2 was smooth with no writing on it, the other had small ribs and small white writing.
      I hope that helps!

    Hi Linnea. Keep up the good work and research. Your hand cut from the sharp edges of the van and realization of it’s impact to your electrical is super important for builders to know. I haven’t done it myself but following Humble Road and must say I like what he has to say about wiring. Ancor marine grade 12ga. It has an extra sheath around the 2 individual wires AND he looms them all, AND where worried about additional rub uses thick butyl electric tape and sometimes a second layer of loom. Think of it as a belt and suspenders for your electric system. Hope this tip helps a future builder. Looking forward to watching more of your vids. @vantransitions

    Solid wire is more apt to break from vibration when the van is moving.
