This was a historic event. Michael at this time was the largest pop star on the planet. Eddie Murphy was the largest movie star on the planet. Arsenio was the first black late night talk show host.

No. Stop lying. Amazing performer, but not good-looking, not since Thriller. The audience loved his music, his videos, and Michael rarely gave interviews, he kept himself rare. That's why they're going crazy. Arsenio and Eddie knew him, they weren't star-struck.

I remember watching this show every night when I was a kid. I remember when Arsenio announced that he was going to have Eddie Murphy on his show, and my two sisters and I were so excited because we were huge fans of his (my older sister especially because she had a crush on him). I was laying in bed acting like I was asleep but really sneaking watching this episode. I would usually watch it with the TV's volume being as low as possible, but loud enough for me to hear it. That all changed when Michael came out. I absolutely lost it. I hollered. I screamed so loud, I thought I heard echoes throughout the house. I then realized that those echoes were the screams from my sisters and mother, who were all watching the same show in their personal rooms. After we discovered that we were all watching the same show, we all converged into my parents' room, and watched the rest of the episode there. Thank you, Arsenio, for making your show time our family time. We love you, and late night television hasn't been the same since you left. Thank you, Michael, for all the love you showed throughout your music and towards your blessings of others, as displayed here in this clip. Thanks, Eddie, for making this night an adventure for my family (and presumably for Michael, as well). Thanks for giving me the opportunity to speak my mind about this.

People are nuts about fame. They're just two human beings who happened to be the most popular in their fields at a certain time. What they do respectively doesn't even compliment one another. What would happen if James Brown and Richard Pryor were standing on a stage together? They'd just be STANDING ON A STAGE TOGETHER.

@@misterjackson7928 - Stop with the light skin BS! I'm a light skin man myself, and have always hated with how people in this crazy damn world obsess over skin color, it's one of the many problems that this world has.
Michael Jackson was a good looking guy before the surgery or surgeries. He didn't need to do it, but he himself was obsessed with skin color, really White people. I know they said it was confirmed he had vitiligo, but he wanted to be White looking in a way imo, and he went beyond being light skin when at the end he had no skin pigmentation whatsoever with all the bleaching. That was crazy and just going overboard because he just didn't need to do it, he had a look at one time when he was perfect looking and didn't need to do anything else, but of course we all know he kept going to the cosmetic surgery well.
That look he had in a poster I had of him as a kid where he had on a tan color jacket with blue jeans on with a guitar belt buckle was a great look, and he should have stopped right there.

I have always thought of Michael Jackson as a superstar. I am NOT so enamored of him as to be unobjective. But I am a fan of his. How can anyone who appreciates talent not be? As a young man I watched the child perform. I thrilled to Thriller. I danced to Billie Jean. I thought more of his Super Bowl appearance than the game. There are only a couple people in the same general talent pool as Michael Jackson. Of course he wasn't perfect. Nothing is. Yet, as I watch videos of him again and now with the perspective of age and some hard earned and small wisdom, I realize something I never quite understood before. God put a small bit of himself into Michael. Life never ends. Michael, wherever your spirit is moving in the infinite cosmos I know you think of us here on Earth still. Thanks.

I don't recall meeting him, but Arsenio Hall just had that "face" (t.v. personality/ camera appeal) that just made you want to smile. Maybe it was his unique smile and laugh.
The Great Eddie Murphy, NO QUESTION, had (has) a distinct smile (and laugh) and has that affect as well. Although, as a child i didn't dare laugh as though i had been secretly audience to his more raunchy material.
And of course Michael Jackson too. Although, with Michael, there was usually something else going on along with the warm smile he drew out of you. Let's just call it an extra mystique quality. Not at all a subtle jab at the transitioned brother, but rather a respect for his consistency while also poised to hear an utterances of his reality (his voice) through the majesty of his poetry and song or the modesty of his simple conversation. We miss you Mike. You're in a better place we hope.
But truth be told. All three of those men, beyond their God given raw talent and exceptional discipline of their crafts, these dudes are some cerebral beings. Brilliant, they are.
Now, I don't know them as perfect people. And I'm not seperating them from their ills. I'm not a fan boy or anything. I'm not happy with everything I've learned (i.e. not learned) about them. Particularly Eddie and Michael. They are public celebrities, but they are private people first and last. I have a grip on reality outside of "reality" t.v. I'm only talking about some of the positive attributes. I'm not talking like Tehuti level stuff, but definitely some "Coming to America" & "Remember the Time" kinda' stuff. Eddie and Mike were "The Golden Child(ren)" in Eddies movie and Michaels video(s). If YOU get what i mean...😉
This clip brought back memories as well as a smile. And I try to give credit and recognition for the uplifting things. Cause while i don't dwell in my youthful and even sometimes shamefully nieve indulgences of my childish past, it is that past that sometimes, as did this throwback video clip, that puts a much needed smile not only on my face, but also inside my body, where often enough a smile seems to elude me.
So yeah, Arsenio..the man. Even as a child, i liked his talk show, when i did not really like talk shows much at all. Kids are smart. Even at a very young age i remember Arsenio Halls show was sometimes probably too "exotic" and challenging for "white fragility". He would talk about relevant and serious issues, yet still find a way to leave the audience with something real to think about without taking away from the ultimate goal of also leaving his audience feeling in a better (less sad) space than maybe they were dealing with such issues before they arrived. He seemed like an accommodating host to his "white"/ non-black guests as well.
Unlike some "celebrities" today, whom, I would go so far as to suggest, are not as intelligent and sophisticated as he, would bring a leading mind like The Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan on his show to have conversations of priority.
Can you imagine if Arsenio had the support he would have needed to maintain the trajectory of that talk show? Can you? I bet he could have done to talk show (especially late night) television something akin, if not better than what the internet has done for "the black conversation".
The likes of personalities like Quincy Jones could bring special artists together to perform. Gil Noble, Listervelt Middleton, Sister Bert, Tavis Smiley and Phillipe Matthews could bring the scholars to the table. Arsenio, could've brought them ALL into an integrative format for prime time viewing. CAN YOU IMAGINE???
He had Eddie and Michael at the SAME TIME!! Both he and Eddie on a number of occasions expressed that they were both big fan of Michael, gloves, jackets and all. And you know even though Michael (and I) SOMETIMES might not approve of Eddies SOMETIMES vulgar comedy, you know he probably loved and respected himself some Eddie and his craft. I know i do. - Shout out to Bill Cosby, The Wayans Family, Robert Townsend, Jamie Foxx & Kevin Hart!! - As well as Paul Mooney, Martin Lawrence & Dave Chapelle. Just to name a few...still alive, give thx.
This dude Arsenio had Eddie and Michael right next to him on stage, and that minutia alone of seemingly awkward interactions was a show in and of itself. To see legendary, handsome, intelligent and successful black people together all in appreciation and respect for the positives of each other's contributions. That level of public comradery was powerful.
Arsenio is the type of personality that coulda and woulda had Michael Tyson, Michael Jordan and Michael Jackson all on the show at the same time just so he could find a moment with those powerhouses of Mike's.
Anyway, i could go on, but I'm trying not to over do it. I'm still apparently too longwinded for the digital commentary game.
    Thx for the throw back.

both micheal and eddie were at the top in their genres at the time and had a strong mutual respect for one another.. also it was very hard and not very often you would get a real public appearance by MJ on any talk show or entertainment show as he was a pretty docile kind of person, and many time like Eddie said it was an impersonator ... SO this was definitely one for the record books and MJ was a larger than life ICON,, and the room Stopped which is even more proof :) Man I loved Living my Teen Yrs in the 80s :)

Michael Jackson just walked out and stood there like an handy man but that’s one of the things that amaze me about him like he didn’t have that special kind of charisma celebrities have he was mostly like a normal man like I mean you know what I mean ( when you see Jay z or Beyoncé they have so much charisma even without knowing their songs you can figure they are not “no ones”) when I see Michael I just see talent it’s as if he was a ball of talent. No one cares how he looks his actions talk for him. Amazing !✨ I’m out

This is when talent trumped agenda. So real and pure. Mike knew he was a bad mofo, but he didn't flaunt it. Eddie was also a bad mofo, but has the humility to honor Mike without being jealous. These were great times.
