I spent just one Summer in Wisconsin and came back pronouncing my Southern towns how they would be pronounced in Wisconsin and people thought I was crazy!
**Happy because I grew up in Ashwaubenon** I'm surprised they got it wrong but I supposed that's cos I grew up pronouncing it. It looks how it's pronounced. Ash-Wa(u)-ben-on.
Thanks to all our beloved Brewers that honored our Native American town and city names. Personally, I pray we maintain our respect for those who cared for the land then settled and made our towns and cities important. Despite how hard it is to pronounce as a non-native, we must maintain those names for eternity, and those peoples who loved their land and harvests.
Many Wisconsin town names are Native American in origin so It easily trips people up. Not to mention the Scandanavian, German and French names. Funny thing is that Wisconsinites can just say these names if they've never heard them before cause they have heard many very similar versions before.

Most of Wisconsin towns are native American in origin, but the hand full of European ones are much easier to say such as Madison, Green Bay, Eau Claire, Hayward, Portage, Black River Falls, Holmen, West Salem, Sparta. But other then those they are almost all hard to pronounce native American names.
Ahh i love seeing cities im familiar with like oconomowoc and muskego(30 minutes away from me). Shoulda had them pronounce Mukwonago 😂
