  • In the garden of Gethsemane, Jesus agonized in prayer as the hour approached for Him to endure the wrath of God for the sins of His people. In this sermon, R.C. Sproul continues his sermon series in the gospel of Luke and considers what Jesus’ prayer reveals about both His humanity and His deity.
This sermon was preached by R.C. Sproul at Saint Andrew's Chapel in Sanford, Fla. Hear more from his series in the gospel of Luke: • The Gospel of Luke: Se...

Over 2 days, I watched the movie, SILENCE, that came out some years ago. The theology is questionable. But it was a powerful portrayal of the persecution/torture of Christians in Japan. (Again, iffy theology, but the point was made.) I had to avoid some parts by muting the volume, covering most of the screen with my hand, and reading the captions. I can't have that in my head.
But even with all they suffered, no one in the history of the world has ever suffered as much as Jesus did. Physical and even emotional pain is one thing. What Jesus suffered was something none of us can relate to. We are sinners. We were born sinners. We have no idea what it must feel like to be sin-free, to have had unbroken fellowship with the Father for all eternity, up to this moment. To feel our sin and to feel the Father's wrath for it - I cannot even put it into words because I have no comprehension of what that must have been like for Him.
Thank You, Lord Jesus! You did that for us. You did that for ME. I deserved that. You endured it for me. Even after praising You for thousands, millions of "years" in eternity (however time is measured there) it would never be enough!

Why is it that this message gives hope to my most inner soul where messages of earthly comfortable blessings just fade and make me sleepy. I think I know the answer but the comparison sobers me.

Without Jesus as our Intercessor, we all would face what we deserve.... to have that cup poured over us, ingested by us, and soaked in it for eternity.
Thank GOD for His Son, His mercy and grace.
The ordination of pastors shouldnt be the main take away point from this sermon.

The ordination of Pastors is a point of discussion. What we believe about it does not mean we are saved or not saved.

@Yesica1993 What is a troll? Did you learn to label people trolls by going to church? Does your pastor approve of your calling others' names like troll?

There is no ordination of Pastors in the Bible. Ordination of Pastors is, therefore, false teaching and heresy.

The term “pastor” originates from a Latin word meaning “shepherd.” In the New Testament, church leadership comprises two roles: elder/overseer and deacon. Paul outlines the qualifications for elder/overseer in 1 Timothy 3:1-7 and Titus 1:5-9. Notably, Paul uses the term “overseers” (episcopos in Greek) in the 1 Timothy passage, while referring to them as “elders” (presbuteros in Greek) in Titus. This implies a single role with distinct titles. “Elder” signifies the office holder’s life experience, while “overseer” underscores their responsibility to watch over the congregation and address their spiritual needs.
In Ephesians 4:11, Paul identifies shepherding “pastors” as one function in the Church along with teaching, missionary work, evangelism, and prophecy. That this role is important is seen by the emphasis that Jesus puts on it in John 21:15-17 where Jesus charges Peter to feed and tend His sheep. How is a pastor/shepherd supposed to feed and tend the flock of God? He does this by being able to teach the flock the Word of God (1 Timothy 3:2; Titus 1:9) to bring the flock into maturity, and to be resistant to heresy. He is on guard for false teachers and warns those who stray that there are consequences to their belief and behavior.
In the New Testament, the words sheperd, elder, and overseer can be used interchangeably, with each word providing a different emphasis on what contribution the leaders make to the Body of Christ. The three words come together in 1 Peter 5:1-2 where Peter exhorts elders to shepherd the flock of God and serve as overseers, caring for the flock as they wait for the Chief Shepherd.
