Butler County Airport PA. July 15, 2013. Red Bell-47 G2 Helicopter. Blue Bell-47 D1 Helicopter. Free Helicopter rides. Police Helicopter. Old School. Old Skool. Aviation.
Yes SIR. This is a CLASSIC. More than a jewel. I used to watch Mexico City Air Patrol in my early childhood. When I listened to its noise I called mama or dad to carry me to the house terrace to watch it flying by.
Those 47's were great machines. When I was a youngster and in my teens I used to see a lot of them flying around. Cops used them for patrol work, traffic reporters used them, etc. They were flying around everywhere. These days You Tube is the only place I see them. Glad to see there are people keeping them running.
I had no idea until seeing these two birds side by side that there was a difference in the bubble canopies over the model years. I knew they had different landing gear configurations, but never noticed the difference in the shape of the canopy. Very cool. Awesome video. Thank you for posting it.
You're welcome. The Bubble on some early models was only two seats wide, later versions, or it could've been specified on ordering, were three seats wide.
Well, our H-13 was the same machine we flew in training to go to Huey's enroute to Vietnam. The visibility was great and it was a lot of fun to fly. Our instrument training was in the 13 and it was turbocharged and had a nice instrument package but the aircraft was barely tolerable in the hot Alabama sun.
The radio Station here in Louisville, Kentucky had its own traffic spotter in the air, helicopter used was a Bell 47 with the title of Skywatch 84 the radio station is 84 WHAS (840 on the radio dial). Pilot for Skywatch 84 was Dick Gilbert who was an Air Force pilot in his own right, & raising his daughter Candice Gilbert.
Looks so much the odd one out, with that open frame tail and engine compartment, amongst sleeker designs like the R22 or MD500. Still a great sight to see!
This is great video, the tripod wasn't too needed, I was able to see people walking close to the machines. It looked to me some unsafe. any wind can make one of them to run over someone. These machines made history, and they will stay for a long time more! Good video and thanks fro sharing.
Anyone remember the TV series the Whirly Birds, it came out before I was born but I watched it on Saturday mornings in reruns during the late 60's. So many shows that promoted positive role models for kids to emulate in the 60s and 70s now we have reality TV and hip hop.
I remember Whirlybirds with the pilots Chuck and P.T. There would always be a close up shot of the pilot's hand operating one of the control levers when they were taking off.
It is my understanding, that the 2 Bell's are privately owned by their individual Pilots, each of whom are also township Police Officers, in Butler County PA, USA. These are not used for patrol, but would be brought out for searches, and public events in support of Law Enforcement, and Aviation, as seen here. I believe the pilot of the blue Bell is a full time Airline pilot, and part-time Police Officer, who was trained in Helicopters by my Instructor, whom is also a Police Officer.
240RobertA Thank you, your response is very kind. The two pilots extend my appreciation. Technological support is very important, but it should only be a support, a true pilot must be proficient using hand instruments. I greatly appreciate the U.S. flight schools, because they are very efficient. My best wishes for your future. Hugs from Italy. Antonio Arfé www.inacpo.com
International Academy of Police Operators Yes, allow me to get as much of his info, which may only be his name, that I can ,and I will contact you at your email address.
I was in love with these old Bell's since I was a kid watching the Desilu Tv show Whirlybird Ha.. little did I know that ten years later I would riding shotgun on a UH 1..
Thanks for your quick reply, 240RobertA. Are you saying you don't see *in the video* what I'm describing? I suppose it could be an optical illusion, but it is very obvious at points throughout your very bright and sharp video. As I said, I have never seen this effect before on any other Bell-47 or other rotorcraft video I have viewed. I actually thought, several times "How is that helicopter flying without a working tail rotor??! If I misunderstood your reply, I apologize.
because of the way of the cameras and videos the rear prop and sometimes the main rotor will always be distorted because of the frames per second on the videos
Damn overgrown weed whackers.......why back in my day, if we wanted to fly we just went to the top of the nearest mountain and flinged ourselves right off the damn cliff.....and we liked it!!!!
I have been in love with "copters" since I was a child....so answer me this. I see the blue 47 without any tail rotor spin.....so .why is the chopper not trying to torque itself into a spin...???
Theres no telling how many kids became pilots and aspired to own aircraft because of shows like Whirlybirds, maybe thats what we need today, is some TV shows that portray positive, productive role models for kids.
David Smith I wish their was some way to figure out how many people choose a career in aviation from shows like Whirlybirds, Sky King, 12 O'Clock High, etc that would be interesting, I hear they are predicting a shortage in all fields of aviation in the next 20 years.
What is going on with the tail rotors barely spinning?? At around 4 mins. and 7 mins., for example. How is that possible? Isn't it supposed to be impossible for the helicopter to fly straight without the counterforce of a fast-spinning tail rotor. Yet these are clearly hardly moving, and almost appear bent out of shape. I've never seen that in any other video of a Bell-47,or indeed any helicopter with a tail rotor in flight. I'm baffled. Please explain!?
Hi, that must be an optical illusion caused by the built in camera filming speed, and the camera lens. I can assure you, it doesn't appear that way in person. An additional contributing factor to that, may be the first version of the TH-cam Editor, which I earlier got some constructive criticism on, which stabilized some segments, by splicing parts out, and stretching the two ends together causing a sliding and slippery appearance.
It's all about frequency of the scan on the video camera and the speed of the tail rotor... Think about the old days of using a strobe light to time a cars ignition. Total optical illusion.
Nice, thank you. To me this looks like paradise for plane spotters… so many different small planes and helicopters… :) I love plane spotting because of the sound but recently I have been fascinated by small aircraft and aircraft with turboprop… :) Thanks
+240RobertA The tail number of the airplane at 8:49 is not visible. The float plane shown at that time is not a Cessna 177. The 177 has a cantilever wing.
cat vs dog How many car engines have you seen just quit. These engines are very safe, much more than a Chevy, Ford or any other road vehicle. Don't be afraid of these machines, the maintenance is very strict and you do a visual inspection before every flight.
David Smith yeah I was at an airshow and they had tanks and etc. Well they had a Huey and if you are really high and the engine fails, the blades will still spin from the wind. If you are a good pilot, you can use the rpm to save your ass when your really close to the ground.
+cat vs dog Any engine can just quit.. anything can happen to any helicopter/plane/car/boat/anything.. this is a amazing of a helicopter just because it may not look the best or may not look the safest it really is a amazing helicopter and some of these u can find pretty cheap and work just as good as other helicopters.
That was me filming it, I was too excited to stand still, I didn't go there with the intent of filming, but there was so much activity going on, once I started filming I kept going, then tried to edit each Helicopter into their own video so I admit its not as smooth as it could be with a tripod, but who wants to carry one of those around?
+Martin Pescador That is a 1965 Brantly B2B. I got about 21 Hours in it, N888CF, and another Brantly the school had, since the time I filmed this. You may occassionally hear comments that a Robinson R22 isn't a real Helicopter. That's not true about the Robinson, but it can accurately be applied to the Brantly! This is multiple short videos linked together using the TH-cam editor feature as it was at the time of filming.

I love the 47’s, that’s what I got my Commercial Helo in 35 years ago.
I operated that helicopter for 5 years, I loved flying it, wonderful machine ! Hope it's still flying
N555EN, B47-D1, got my license in that one back in 2007. Nice to see she's still flying.
Just a great platform. Incredibly simple to fly! Excellent trainer. 👍
I love the 47. First aircraft that I flew in. Couldn't have been more than 6 or 7 at the time. I/m an old man now and I still remember it.
Excellent film footage and sound. This brings back a lot of memories.
Thanks.
Nice to see EN again, taught in that for a long time.. Glad she's still flying!!
Thanks for letting us know!!!
The Tennessee Highway Patrol was the first state law enforcement agency to use helicopters and has been a Bell Helicopter customer since.
I miss those old Bell helicopters. They were the coolest choppers around.
That is why the OEM was transferred by Bell Helicopters and they can be rebuilt and built by the manufacturer for we who love these machines.
They are still being rebuilt. Fully and completely beautiful still, as ever !!
This chopper had a thumping sound while in flight because of its two-blade design, similar to the Huey.
Looks so much the odd one out, with that open frame tail and engine compartment, amongst sleeker designs like the R22 or MD500. Still a great sight to see!
Timeless. Ageless
This is great video, the tripod wasn't too needed, I was able to see people walking close to the machines. It looked to me some unsafe. any wind can make one of them to run over someone. These machines made history, and they will stay for a long time more! Good video and thanks fro sharing.

You can watch the original 'Whirlybirds' TV programmes made by Desilou productions here on TH-cam,the red helicopter in this video is a Brantly B2.
Great Filming!!!!!! Bell 47's Forever!!!!!

Cunning Cat ~ Yes . Rescue 8 ; Sea Hunt ; and The Whirlybirds . I feel sorry for today's young people . So many bad influences 😕
Sky Dreamer And there was. Rip Cord. About parachuting dudes in different scenarios.. Cool
I remember Whirlybirds with the pilots Chuck and P.T. There would always be a close up shot of the pilot's hand operating one of the control levers when they were taking off.
And M*A*S*H, too.
That 1956 Bell 47 looked brand new... wish... well you know!
Great video, Robert. Thanks for posting!
Thank you for nice video. You can avoid rear rotor stopping by setting video camera manual mode. Set shutter 1/100s or less.
Bell 47 helicopter has no electronic support. These two pilots are very good. I give them my congratulations. (Excuse me for my bad English language)

Mon premier baptême en hélicoptère! Fut le Bell 47 G et si j' en avait vraiment les moyens, c' est bien celui-ci que je prendrait!!!
The sound of that helicopter always reminds me of the television series MASH
fabulous machines- I learnt to fly in one of these(Many years ago)

The tripod wasn't "too" needed?? I got vertigo trying to watch this! Shooting without a tripod ALWAYS gives amateurish results.

Yes. Flying history. Thanks.
If I win the Lottery I'm buying a Bell 47, complete rebuild with modern avionics.

Everytime I hear a bell 47 I hear suicide is painless which is the Mash Theme
They were used in the Korean war to transport wounded to M.A.S.H. units
Great video...
Thanks!
Amazing what you can make from a goldfish bowl and a meccano set
very nice
How did the wheels on the skis work? I've always wondered :-Y
I want to fly in a helicopter now
I have been in love with "copters" since I was a child....so answer me this. I see the blue 47 without any tail rotor spin.....so .why is the chopper not trying to torque itself into a spin...???
Film speed gives appearance of not moving but it is.
All the Bell 47's sound exactly the same, I wonder if anyone has an improved muffler for the engine these days to quiet them down a bit.
Happy landing
nice
can the one built and design one like this

Once you've seen one, you've really seen them all.
Hate the way the camera makes the tail rotor look static.
Give the guy a break, He didn't go there with the intent of professionally shooting these birds...

Yeah. Chuck and PT flying Bell 47's. late 50's early 60's maybe. Black and White. That and Sky King were definitely my favorites.

Stresses me out to see the cameraman walking by the tailrotor on startup...
Yeah, we wouldn't want to damage those tail rotors.

You did fine. Filming while moving around dangerous objects you pay attention to your safety first, filming second.
