Bowie is so great; and constantly re-inventing himself. Best to go in order, which you aren't doing too bad a job of so far by sticking to early stuff. Do his first great song "Space Oddity" next. Fun fact: Rick Wakeman of Yes fame plays the Mellotron string sounds on the song which were a very modern and high tech thing in 1969! Bowie revisits this song with a follow up over a decade later on his awesome "Scary Monsters" album. Thanks for listening and sharing!
    Peace from SF

Congratulations for not having melted. "Man Who Sold the World" is a good place to start. Nirvana's acoustic cover of this was excellent. An elegant, poignant song - might have to do with him being driven to do just about anything to break into making a living in music. Bowie hit his stride with the _Ziggy_ _Stardust_ - _Aladdin_ _Sane_ - _Diamond_ _Dogs_ albums, then the Berlin trilogy. Long career with a big catalogue full of different styles. Bowie was a fan of Barrett-era Floyd. Bowie's family had a history of mental illness, including his idolized half-brother Terry Burns, who is responsible for introducing David to the London music scene, avant-garde literature, and other cultural influences. Bowie used Terry and the topic of madness in many lyrics. Terry was institutionalized several times, and Bowie attempted to care for him during the early 1970s (when Bowie and his wife Angela were living in a completely crazy, drug-fueled whirlwind), which failed. Terry ended up being re-institutionalized, then committing suicide several years later.

Some great songs by bowie. Some favourites are life on mars, space oddity, lets dance, changes, starman, heroes ... Just to name a few! Great reaction 🙂

Very appropriate track in that Bowie changed his persona so many times. You may want to go album by album.
My favorite Bowie tunes are probably Station to Station and Panic In Detroit, but would recommend The Jean Genie or Ziggy Stardust as a good launching point.

I also suggested Ziggy. You cant miss with that album. And I think it's by far the most up his alley.

Loved your reaction. You might try listening to the album in its entirety if you liked the title track. It’s a mindf**k. If you jump ahead a year to Hunky Dory try Quicksand, or for a real puzzler that’ll have you pondering it for a long while; The Bewlay Brothers.

Bowie is another one with wonderful concept albums, that should be consumed together as one unit. Especially with all his different character incarnations. Would be well worth your time to work through The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. There is no filler on that album. They are all monsters.

Have a listen to Lulu’s cover of this great song . Bowie produced it and sings with her. It is my favourite version .

I didn't know Lulu did a cover. I gotta check it out with David as a duet? Interesting. Don't think it was released here. Is she same Lulu as "To sir with love?"

@@dana_brooke_27 Yes the same Lulu! It was a massive hit in 1974. I was a mobile DJ at the time and was always playing it. A great production . Lulu and David were great friends. She is still out there performing today . She also married a Bee Gee ,Maurice Gibb. She is most well known for her 60s hit ‘Shout’ Look her up a great performer!

@@brianmusson1827 I'm assuming you're in the UK by the way you spelled favorite. Am I right. I will definitely check it out. I know songs from her from 60's that were big here. The 60's I was young but they lingered through the years. I never knew she was married to a Gibb. That's news. I just listened to "Shout" I didn't know she recorded this. Big change from the sweet "To Sir With Love" what's a mobile DJ? You do it from your car?

@@brianmusson1827 The UK has put out the best Progressive Rock music in the world. Not to mention the best Rock bands in general. I wanna go to England in the worst way. Great accents. Most of what I listen to is from your part of the world.

Don't come to Florida from this time of year til October. It's literally like living in a frying pan. The sun is painful. I'm from N.Y. I don't like the heat either.
I like David's live version better. Kurt Cobain covered it.. had nothing to do with writing it. He wasn't even born yet. A lot of people thought Nirvana wrote this song. Their cover brought them some success.

Glad you liked this song. Trying to interpret Bowie's lyrics literally is usually a fools errand.

May I recommend you hear Bowie guesting with David Gilmour’s band and sings the verse to ‘Comfortably Numb’ Really good and Bowie makes the song his own. Sings it in a different way to how it is normally sung, but he does a fantastic job.
