Hello Becky! Inspiring documentary of your solo adventure and survival in the wild woodlands! From what I know of ticks from Moravia in the Czech Rep. , where there is plenty and we had a whole routine for examining for them after visiting woodlands, invariably people (and/or dogs) with a tick embedding got it while walking and the tick would land from a tree. As in , I don't think they crawl or climb up to host. So as long as you are covered, wear a hat or hood , at night you are covered by the shelter, you should fine. Always check yourself, and hair, once a day. They can be removed with soap (but people may know other ways) by unscrewing them counter-clock wise (do not rip them out as the head stays embedded!!). If you suspect a tick and can't get at it, then head to base camp and have someone remove it for you. My uncle got infected, last year, because he did not remove it and had to be cured with loads of antibiotics. So it's nothing to neglect. The main message is that they tend to fall from trees and it's how they end up on a person or animal in the first place. Looking forward to part 2! Love the preparedness!

Hi Becks. Loved the video. Agree with you that solo camping & camping with company both have their pros & cons. You can't beat a bit of solitude but it isn't everyones cup of (nettle) tea. Sharing the experience is probably best when you live alone like me. Look forward to part 2 xx

The DD tarp is a great piece of kit! We've got the XL version and we love it. It works so well as a cover for our hammocks.
I just bought it and the first night I ever tried it out, the wind blew a branch through it and punched a hole in it 😂 - it is a great bit of kit though.

Great vid my friend. Please be very mindful of those flint stones you have around the fireplace. They have a nasty habit of turning into little bombs, when they get too hot. Last thing you want, are razor sharp and red hot flint fragments flying around. Keep up the great content. All the best from Denmark.
Yep. Some rocks get water in them and the evaporation creates an expansion ...and explode the rock. It's even more dangerous considering that flint make nasty pointy things.
@@Chadok89So true. What makes flint especially volatile are the internal tensions that will make them fracture, even though they absorb little to no water. As kids in Scandinavia, we were always i instructed to only use granit for fireplaces.
What is the best way to identify flint?
@@zombiefreak239 it's often quite "round" when not broken, kinda "intestins" shape. It often have a slightly white coat like if there was flour on it. And if it's broken, it usually broke very sharp with straight edges and have a little glass looking. It's hard to describe but I'm sure google images have plenty of example to show :)

Nice vid :)
Rather than bland basmati rice,. try arborio "rissoto" rice. throw in a quarter of a veg or chicken stock cube per serving. fry the rice for a couple of minutes in a little oil/butter,. add water/stock cube to completely cover the rice and let it simmer until the grains of rice are soft. (20mins)
(optional extras), mushrooms, bacon, chorizo sausage, ramson's etc,.. fry those in with the rice at the start ,. a little basil and oregano, if you have them, will make a big difference.
TIP: You should use your hand to judge the quantity of rice,. whatever you can hold in one cupped hand will fill your belly.

Good on you, Becky, to take on a project like this! Some of the channels I follow show bushcrafters who are mainly trying to get a video in the can and get home. I like the skilful and methodical way you practice the techniques and use the best way every time. But RICE ALONE? I don't know.

I'm seeing a lot of mentions on Facebook bushcraft groups about how bad the ticks are at the moment in the UK. Makes me want to spray DEET over everything! Great video btw.
You’d be better off treating fabrics with permethrin mate.
@@markl2815 I'm sure that's good advice. DEET is banned in some places due to it's potency and side effects. It also melts some plastics. It's powerful stuff. You need to be careful how you use it. Wouldn't recommend it to beginners.
I contracted Lymes Disease 2 weeks ago whilst out cooking breakfast in the woods in Kent (UK). I thought it was a mosquito bite as it itched a few days later but I never saw the tick and it could have only been in for a few hours as the bite was on my forearm and one of us in the house would have noticed. 11 days later my wife noticed the bullseye rash on my forearm (which only appeared for one day) and after consulting with a doctor I'm on 3 weeks of antibiotics and had a blood test yesterday. Having spent 50yrs in and out of the woods this is the first time for me but I could have so easily missed it. I guess be aware and tick check as it's serious £$%^.
@@RobCanada sorry to hear that mate. Hope the antibiotics do the trick. I got an infected bite years ago camping/fishing on the Medway near Yalding. Ended up with Septacaemia and a 5 day stay in hospital on an IV drip. There's permanent muscle and nerve damage to my leg, and it's not pretty to look at. But it still works and I'm grateful it wasn't worse.
I swapped to a hammock to get of the ground honestly last time I was out if any of my gear was on the ground there was a tic on it was so strange
Nice tarp setup. For sleeping you should move the open edge closer to the ground to lessen the change of rain coming in. Then for daytime sitting move back up again.. Also when exploring see if you can find any wild garlic, great in the rice and mixed in with hot water , when cooled use as a body rub / wash

Make your own tick spray, 2 parts water to 1 part vinegar. Good to keep off mosquitoes and other critters. Nobody will smell it out in the sticks. Good for a body wash, and periodic spray on exposed areas. Thanks for the video.

Be a little careful using bracken as insulation in certain areas of the UK and during the warmer months as they can harbour ticks, particularly if there are deer around.

For ticks I found out they really don't like the lavender dryer sheets. One in each sock, each of my front pants pockets, and one somewhere around each shoulder does seem to help.
I bought a DD tarp today and used it to make a tarp tent. I couldn't find my airbed or camping roll but I thought a few cushions on the ground would do. I lasted
20 minutes before the hard ground digging in my hip made me abandon tonight's attempt.

It's nice to see people actually take the bare minimal gear
if it's temporary, you can easily cut some large wild grape vines and collect the water that drips out of them. It's slightly sweet, but won't harm you, and doesn't need any purification, just patience. I know this works with wild grapes, and they are easy to identify, but I suppose this same trick would work with any vine, so long as it's not poison ivy, though I'm not 100% on this last bit, it's just my own conjecture.

You are aware that rough camping is permitted in Scotland. Coast, woodland, lochs, streams and rivers that allow one to live like a lord. I use a sea kayak during the spring, summer and early autumn...then revert to a backpack and Wellington's for the winter. Waterproof bags essential all year round in Scotland! Take care.🌹
Take a look at Google maps for an overview of bus routes and places not far from them for wild camping sites. My email is: misterjarack@gmail.com if you would like recommendations. Wellington's rather than expensive boots. Through the years I have spent a small fortune (an ITU nurse) that I didn't have on walking boots which all let me down. Since 2005 I have been a guide in the Mauritanian Sahara and use Merrells without the backstrap. They are infinitely better than boots during the summer months. No blisters and healthier for your feet as they are exposed to the air. When crossing streams it takes no time at all. Bare feet is best!

Loved your video. Your choice of gear is rather different to mine as I pick mine for hillwalking in Scotland. Never slept under a tarp although I have an ex-Army bivi bag which I use occasionally. Not used any of my stuff so far this year because of the pandemic but there is still a couple of months of fine weather left to get out.
You might be interested in a fella called Adrian Boots who writes on wild food and foraging for the Mendip Times. Lots of stuff by him online if you don't live in the area.
