    These little fish don't get the appreciation they deserve. The beauty coupled with personality just makes me sad to see them in little cups and I'm not one to particularly care about animal right's especially things like fish, but seeing them in those little cups kinda hurts when you've seen their personality come through when in a better and larger environment. They're really endearing little fish. Bettas and freshwater angelfish yank at my heartstrings in a way I didn't expect before I had experience keeping them. I love those little guys.

      Such practice should be forbidden by a law. Simple but institutions don't care. Example: European Union multiple tons of stupid regulations but don't see fish needs, sad.

      I know one fishkeeper had a long finned betta who would constantly go after his tankmates. His giant fins slowwd him down and prevented him from posing a threat, but that didn’t stop him trying! (To the point his fins developed tears and got infected and he had to be moved to his own tank)
      Meanwhile she’d later get a plakat who was very chill. He nipped at her mystery snail a couple times out of curiosity but never bothered her tetras
      Shows that, just like with dogs, while we can generalize the behavior of certain breeds, they’re still individuals with unique personalities

    I love plakat bettas! After long finn first betta fish, I got my first plakat from a breeder ( that fish was a firecracker . He attacked anything and everything!). Nowadays, I tend to lean towards more wild types. I currently have a 10 gallon with some chillie rasboras, alien betta male and a school of pygmy corydoras. IT is the most relaxing and satisfying 10 gallon tank I ever had!

    The red dragon scale plakat in your video Dave is my favourite variety. The only problem with dragon scale bettas is that as they get older the scales have a tendency to grow over the eyes and they also are more prone to developing tumours. I spawned this variety a few years ago but unfortunately did not video the spawning and development of the fry.
    BTW I have a video on my channel of breeding a black dragon scale plakat with a blue female that I spawned at the time of the first COVID lockdown. It is not the best quality I’m afraid as I shot it on an iPad!?

    I watched a video from Alex (Fishstory) about the prevalence ( or lack there of) of betacarotene in wild betta diets and that the colour red was correlated to increased aggression due to resource guarding behavior.
    Basically the toughest betta fish would have all the beta-carotene and those fosh would end up showing bright reds and orange hues as a sexual signifier,

    • @TheDave333
      @TheDave333  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      In many fish species the colors red or pink will heighten when the fish get ready to spawn. Flamingoes do the same thing when getting ready to mate. Generally, the more red you have the healthier you are because it indicates that you've been eating well. Vertebrates can't produce their own Betacarotene, so it must be obtained by eating lots of food. So, the more red you have, the better of a parent you will be. This trend is common in many species. Red shows up as a sign of good health. And since the male betta does all the fry rearing, he needs to be healthy and well-fed.

      Not all plakats are like that though
      Know one fishkeeper whose plakat was very chill towards his tankmates
      I think the bad rep is because their short fins make it easier for them to chase after other fish
      I also read that halfmoons, etc. are considered the least aggressive but that same fish keeper also had a half moon that would constantly go after her other fish, but he wasn’t very good at it due to that giant sailfin slowing him down (not that it stopped him from trying tho!)
      While I do think genetics can play a factor in a betta fish’s aggression, it’s also important that they have distinct personalities and you can never truly predict how they’ll behave

    Gorgeous markings on this guy, his form is quite different from the others, but very striking. He does rather look like a Boss. Is their fighting territorial, or just generally antisocial? I was told that they live in fairly muddy water in the wild, but I don’t know if that is true…it would be hard to make an impressive display if the ladies can’t see you. Thanks for this Dave.🤗🖤🇨🇦

    • @TheDave333
      @TheDave333  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Since bettas are often found in small bodies of water, they have to protect what little space they have with aggressive behavior. Some of it is caused by selective breeding by humans, and some of it is just a natural tendency to protect their small but valuable territory. Humans run into a similar problem with aggression when we're crowded together in densely packed cities. Not so different from fish. . . ❤❤❤

    • @tamarrajames3590
      @tamarrajames3590 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@TheDave333 Thank you, I see your point about crowding being a factor…seems like every species needs a degree of personal space. The selective breeding for aggression is for the Beta fights humans set up and bet on I assume. I hope they don’t make them fight to the death. I am opposed to all the creatures being made to fight for the owners to get money off, and there are so many it is done to…there is something very wrong with people who do that. I hope you are having a lovely week.💖🖤🇨🇦

      They don't fight to the death, all a fish has to do is get its opponent to back down and give up. Still, I don't condone letting them fight for fun or for profit. On a happier not, Spring in on the way. . . I miss the warmth.❤

      Plakats are bred for fighting the Chinese traders bought plakats from Thailand to China and crossed with some gourami species to create plakats like pitbulls they are still used in Thailand and Vietnam for fighting and gambling the aggressive nature in their DNA, bigger body and short fins gets them edge over other bettas in fight. Colors also play a crusual role red and blue mixed bettas are usually more aggressive and more stable
