I play professionally with the symphony orchestra in my state. He came to do a concert with us a few years ago and I had the pleasure of being seated literally right next to his piano bench only about three feet to his right. We were side by side. Never made so many mistakes on stage in my life! I was so distracted by everything about him! Truly an incredible artist and musician. Handsome as hell, too! His eyes were a color blue that I had never seen before!

I've seen him twice live. The first time he was opening for Stevie Nicks in 1998. The last time was just a few years ago, and his voice is still vibrant and amazing.

One of the old school songs on that short list has the song "REGULATE" by Warren G featuring Nate Dogg (RIP).
Warren sampled the song without Michael's permission. Now that you've heard Michael's song you'll be like "Wait a minute that's I Keep Forgettin".
"Regulate" is 🔥 fire! Old school West Coast Hip Hop. The song & video were huge in the mid 90's. In the settlement, Michael ended up being paid very, very, very well for the sample.

    • @williamshoven
      @williamshoven 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

Actually Warren G did get permission for this sample. It was a 25% split of the regulate profits, Warren, Michael, Nate Dogg and the record company that owned the song I Keep Forgettin'.

He's from St. Louis. He had a lot of musical influences. No matter how much they try to divide us all, being neighbors, music, and eating similar food at the bbq is what brings people together. I hope a lot of kids start realizing that. Having younger people like you reacting, and realizing, although we all have our own unique backgrounds and perspectives, we can all be one family. We won't always get along on everything, but really, we all get along pretty well if we don't let the powers that be and the media keeps us all apart. Love one another. It's all we can do.

The reason it sounds familiar is you've prob heard " Regulate" by Warren G, classic hip hop, who sampled the beat off this song. Michael's voice is amazing, and yes when it first came out i was a kid, i thought he was black too!💃🕺💞💞

Michael McDonald was in the bands The Doobie Brothers and Steely Dan. He is a favorite pick among artists to sing background vocals. He also has lots of duets/collaborations with many singers.
Michael is a song writer, record producer, & has a huge solo career. Michael can do it all.
He has one of the most soulful voices in the business. The more you hear him - all you need to hear is just a few words he sings in any song and instantly know - that's Michael McDonald. Blue eyed soul, for reals.
"I Keep Forgettin" is about a guy who is struggling to accept that his relationship has ended, and doesn't understand why. He fights his emotions every time he sees his former lover.
5 Grammys & too many other awards to mention! He was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Music has no color. Everyone has their idea when they hear music , But, everyone loves music, no matter what soul you have. Music makes you feel better. "Makes my day"! Even as a young girl I sang and was constantly told to stop but as I grew up I did karaoke and they were surprised I could sing. Always have music on your life. Music is life.

I have tickets to see the Dobbie Brothers this summer and Michael is joining them. Michael became their lead singer in the 80’s. So I am thrilled to see everyone again. I am trying to see all my favorite artists for the 2nd and 3rd time. We ain’t getting any younger😎 A lot of the music I grew up with has been sampled. I guess original ideas are hard to create🤷‍♀️

I'm a white woman born in the 70s. I always knew The Bee Gees, Bobby Cadwell and the Righteous Brothers were white. But I th ought this man was black. In my mind he's still a old black man playing in a old Honky Tonk with some brother's that look like the Temptations playing in his band.

Michael’s sound is soulful like a lotta white dudes: Boz Scaggs (Dirty Low Down), Kenny Loggins (This Is It), KC& Sunshine Band (That’s The Way I Like It), Robin Thicke (We’ve Got the Magic). This song was sampled by rapper Warren G. Other Michael McDonald joints you should check out: What a Fool Believes, Takin It To The Streets.

I graduated in 83. There was a lot of great music back then . I metmy high school sweetheart in 80 and we broke up in 83. I was in shock. I knew he could never find someone like me and the way we were , he was really screwing up. But over the years we have stayed friendly and talked off and on. He reminded me the other day about a couple songs from that album. I get a lump in my throat. Never had so much fun with any guy ever again. We used to see each other fir a few month after he broke up with me me. I didn't want to let him go. And when this song came on the radio, I still thought, it ain't over, I'm gonna get him back. Around the same timr time , Is it a crime? By SADE was popular. Anita Baker , you better watch your step. Those were the songs I had to cling to. Boy I cried my eyes out over losing him. I had a new love by the next year. Memories are the things we will always have when the rest is gone.

Yacht rock (originally known as the West Coast sound[4][5] or adult-oriented rock[6]) is a broad music style and aesthetic[7] commonly associated with soft rock,[8] one of the most commercially successful genres from the mid-1970s to the mid-1980s. Drawing on sources such as smooth soul, smooth jazz,[1] R&B, and disco,[7] common stylistic traits include high-quality production, clean vocals, and a focus on light, catchy melodies.[6] Its name, coined in 2005 by the makers of the online video series Yacht Rock, was derived from its association with the popular Southern Californian leisure activity of sailing.

The most surreal example I know of a white singer sounding black is Bobby Caldwell's "What You Won't Do For Love (or Bobby Bloom's 1970 song Montego Bay).
It's amazing and you can't wrap your mind around the fact that he is white. I know it doesn't matter but it is a little trippy.
It got alot of airplay at the time and was out around the same time as this song

The distinguishing thing about Michael's voice is that he doesn't sing falsetto to hit the highs. He sings them in his full voice. (His words, quoting Donald Fagan regarding why he hired him for Steely Dan back-up vocals)

LOTS of this music came out in the 70's/80's when I was growing up. I LOVE watching younger people discover the music from that era. It keeps the music alive through the generations.

Needless to say I was stunned when I seen he was white not that it matters, because good music is good music no matter who is singing it. Michael McDonald sings from his soul! Love listening to him. He always sounded a lot like Billy Ocean to me. 😊🌹

So when I saw her on American Bandstand, I thought it was the lighting being so bright. Thinking she was very very light skinned black woman. Lol it's funny how your mind tries to justify what you see to make it fit into what you think! Lol it was my cousins who were like no she is white! I was like oh! Old School songs there were quite a few singers who were white and sounded black because they WENT TO SCHOOL WITH BLACKS FOR A SHORT AMOUNT OF TIME PEOPLE. Yes, there were civil rights residue but primarily whites and blacks went to the same school and then Reagan and everyone talked about them moving out of the regular mixed neighborhoods and predominately white and black neighborhoods occurred again. So they were heavily influenced by black singers, their black musician teachers and black singers in the schools and musicians. This was In the 1970s. There were no crazy cops like they have today. It is so different today and people who weren't living back then would think I'm lying. And I'm not. There are other blacks who remember this time period as well.

I totally get the "he sounds black" thing, though. Don't feel bad for mentioning it. When Michael was about to join the Doobie Brothers, Tiran Porter admitted he was skeptical when he first saw him, but then he got excited when "I heard this black man's voice come out of this white dude." LOL Nothing wrong with noticing it. Being able to cross genres and cultures is a good thing. McD is amazing.
