    Fun fact: HM1, HM2, and HM3 are all titles in the Navy. It threw me for a loop when I was at my training base and I’d hear “Good afternoon, HM2”.

    This was my first pedal in 94. I still have it and it’s still awesome.

    I like this a lot more than the original. Not really my kind of pedal. I'm more a Blues Driver kind of player, but I can appreciate it for what it is. One thing I noticed is that if I use very high output pups like a DiMarzio Super 3 or X2N it gives an extra kick to any distortion pedal and it interacts with the amp in a very different way. Everything is a balance. Sometimes you want to use a lot of push from a pedal, sometimes just a little. But a good pedal makes the right kind of difference. The Blues Driver and SD-1 are my two favorite dirt pedals of all time. They get the right kind of overdrive, great tone. I just go for a classic rock tone and I get it. A pedal like the HM-2 is great if you want to go over the top. Great for extreme metal.

    I may be a HM-2 guy but one thing I’ve always liked about the HM-3 is that it is one of the few metal distortions that actually sounds pretty good going directly into the input of a clean channel dialed in correctly.

    The Vox Joe Satriani Time Machine delay! That’s one of my favorite pedals! His entire line of Vox pedals are great!

    I tried the HM-2 and HM-3 back to back, the HM-3 is more scooped and has more gain.

    Pedals like the HM and Metal Zone are essentially a poor man's Mesa. I've been in that situation more often than not where I had to get a good wallop of gain. Recording is another ballgame. But I'm talking about rocking out in the bedroom, the garage or a gig at a small club or party. I played some early gigs with a Ross solid state driven by a battery powered Peavy boosted with a Boss Turbo Overdrive. Not the greatest tone but I got me what I needed for the situation. I eventually learned a lot more about tone and sounded a lot better and played better too. But this was back when I was thirteen or fourteen, like 1986-87, playing in my first two or three bands. Nobody who liked metal was complaining about my tone. Some of the best compliments I got on my tone were when I borrowed a friend's Peavey Classic combo and boosted it with an SD-1 at a small club. I thought maybe it was because of the MegaDrive I'd just popped into my Baretta. Well, that could have been part of it, but the amp and the pedal made the biggest difference. I also recommend players consider used gear because it can be a very good deal. Players should learn to trust their ears and keep an open mind. If a Blues Driver actually gets you the tone you've been searching for, but the more metal sounding pedal doesn't then go for the Blues Driver. If a Metal Zone floats your boat more than the overpriced boutique pedal of the moment go for the Metal Zone. I began to favor Gibson scale instruments a long time ago because it just works for me better than strat scale. I like a lot of strat scale axes too but Gibson scale like my Hofner Shorty or my old Revstar or SBG 200 were wonderful.

    The HM-3 is not a bad pedal per say, but it lacks the bite of the HM-2 but has an actual useful EQ which ironically makes it nothing to write home about. It's generic loose distortion which you can get out of a gazillion other pedals and amps but it is not bad and you can get a usable stoner rock/metalish sound out of it. It would not be my first choice though.

    If you get around to shooting it out against the HM2 one day, it would be great if you could compare it against the HM2 Waza version.

    My dumb brain's going in two different directions as a result of the name of the pedal alone.
    A: Who needs a Hyper-Drive when you have a HYPER METAL?!
    B: That one Sonic OVA on VHS (one of the characters is called "Hyper Metal Sonic" for some reason)
    Membrane noise aside, the pedal does sound killer. Thank you for the content, Robert. Have a great day.

    That green guitar seems to be your #1
    Does it have a story?

    • @RobertWJackson
      @RobertWJackson  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It’s the one I grab the most for TH-cam because it’s a great guitar, has unbelievable tuning stability, and over just plays and sounds great, but more so because it’s a moderately priced guitar that is easy to find and most anybody can afford. Demoing a lot of the gear that I demo doesn’t always make sense to do so with a $4000 guitar. I pulled it out of the box brand new about 4 years ago and I’ve still only had to set it up once.
      For my own purposes like playing out live, my gold Music Man Majesty would probably be the actual “#1”. (I actually hate that term because I like different guitars for various applications, and not all of those applications are the same.)

    I had a hm 2 in the mid eighties. I really did not like it. In fact, it was the worst distortion pedals I ever had. It was double the price of the DS 1 that tuned out to be a favorite. The new one here I think sounds better
