Actually I do like the fact Luffy *was* the side character during this arc. Yeah he is always the main character but Luffy throughout the war had to always be helped out by others and constantly went against people far stronger than him (Kuma, Mihawk, all three admirals, Sengoku, etc.) To the opposition, he was a mere annoyance to them and he only fully caught their attention after releasing his conquerors
I prefer these kind of setup for Luffy and the other main protagonist. there must be someone better than them just incase they are in trouble, that someone is the absolute life saver. if luffu and the gang is the best in the series, there would be no more thrill and excitement.
Luffy and Blackbeard seems to have the same reactions in this arc, the power of the old generation (WB,shanks,roger) are insanely powerful, worst generation had nothing on em.
the one and only time luffy was truly just shocked by strength, not because said strength was being used against him or his friends, but just the pure power of it.
