Yes, once upon a time, fishsticks really were more fish than breading. Hardly any prepackaged food is as good as if used to be -- lower quality, but much higher price.
All these companies trying to cope with Bidenomics inflation rate over 100% on many foods, energy, etc.
The Gortons fish fillets for sandwiches are superior to the other brands. They are whole pieces and not minced, and they cook up great in an air fryer. Put them on a fresh home baked bun with some tartar sauce and cheese and you're set to go.
Almost forgot, some shredded lettuce makes the sandwich so much better. This homemade fish sandwich destroys Long Dong Silvers.
@@JohnSmith-gq9gn Lon. dong lol. I love it
@@JohnSmith-gq9gn I thought it was Long Dong Silver's, Ha, ha, ha!
@@wiz4020 That's what I said.
2 whites don't make a wong
I knew I woke up at 6am for a reason
Because your wet dream ended?
I’m on the same boat ✌🏽
@Loki8448 • Was needing to poop the reason?
It’s been hours and nobody has mentioned Kanye - is the internet broken?
For me, it was to wake and bake and then get the munchies to eat more fish sticks
Can't have a frozen fish sticks test without Van De Kamps.
Larry, you mentioning the fish stick salad recipe gives me an idea. I’d love to see you make recipes that are printed on the side of product packages and rate them.
Great idea
Especially the ones that just sound weird!
Growing up when my mom didn't have time to cook dinner, we would have fish sticks and tater tots. With lots of ketchup and tartar sauce.👍
With enough ketchup and tarter sauce, the packaging becomes edible. 😋
Gorton’s fish sticks are terrific for a singleton. Relatively healthy, inexpensive, tasty, quick to fix. I like them with malt vinegar. Have some in my freezer even now!
I keep my Malt vinegar on top of fridge...😒
Maybe I am getting my brands mixed up, but I just tried some of the fish sticks we got for my nephew.
Could've sworn they were Gorton's, and that they were cheaper and quite great for what they were, this vid surprised me.
I like Gorton's, but I usually go for the fish fillets. The ones crunchy breaded are the best in my opinion!
As a bit of a fish stick connoisseur myself, the best fish sticks are trident brand “ultimate fish stick”. You can get a big bag at Costcos for not that much
I love the Gortons beer battered fish planks, and the Gortons parmesean crusted ones too.
About a year or two ago I decided to revisit fish sticks since it was a childhood favorite. I tried all the popular brands and some of the more niche premium ones and none of them were really very satisfying, unfortunately. I think my palate and taste has just moved onto things like fried fish filets and such.
If you can find it, Trident Seafood makes very good fish sticks.
Dude! I'm French but your content never disappoints. And lately you've been uploading like crazy. Thank you so much! Please don't ever change the background music. It's so comforting.
I saw on America's test kitchen they reviewed fish sticks. The dude said get the Gorton's made from whole pieces of panko breaded Alaskan pollock (I get them at BJs they aren't too pricy) and to make fish tacos from them...and I must say...it makes a pretay pretay pretay pretay good fish taco for not having to fry fish yourself
I did it the other day with homemade mango salsa they were fire
Fish sticks and mac n cheese was a staple of my childhood
Tell me you grew up poor without telling me you grew up poor 😂
Staple is cringe. Dumb comment
As a kid, I'd eat the whole box. Not because they were any good, but to use them as a vehicle for the tartar sauce.
I did not conform ate um all. Now 68 yrs later still so FAT😊
@@prestonrobert2625 Fat = happy. Enjoy your life.
I used to make a fish stick sandwich. Two lightly toasted pieces of bread, with mayo and tartar sauce on each side. Heavy on the Mayo. Man that was a treat. Lol.
I definitely remember more fish inside of them when I was a kid.
Gorton's Beer Battered Filets are outstanding. We use them for fish tacos or fish sandwiches.
Those are brands I don't think we have in Canada. And I don't think there's anywhere here (nowhere I shop, anyways) that you'll get 44 fish sticks for under six bucks. They want eight bucks for a small box with maybe a dozen of the little rectangular ones but at least the're more fish than breading. I like putting them in a hotdog bun with mayo and relish. maybe with a processed cheese slice.
Yes. I have never seen either of these brands in Canadian stores.
I prefer the haddock fish sticks (vs. random by-catch), but they are not easy to find.
We eat fish sticks fairly regularly, so if you can find a really good brand (cost vs. flavor), that would be fantastic WP. Thanks for starting up this search.
We used to get fancy and make fish stick "patty melts" with grilled onions and Thousand Island dressing. Shredded cabbage too, if we had any. Was actually something to look forward to.
Van de kamps is the brand my mom would buy when I was a kid. Lots of tarter sauce and they weren’t bad
Since when is there a 1 thru 5 scale 😂 times are tough when creators gotta cut back on the rating scale 😅. Thank for the uplaods and keep them coming Larry!
MAKES NO SENSE, DOES IT ? NOW HE USES HALF STARS. I DON'T GET IT.
Not finished with first cup of coffee and here I am checking out fish sticks with Mr Pit. Way to Larry!!
Rock on!
You're drinking coffee and I'm going to bed. Have a great day!
They have changed the recipe since you were a kid . Sticks used to be more rectangular instead of round, so twice as much fish.
AND A LOT BIGGER. I QUIT BUYING THEM YEARS AGO...NONE ARE GOOD.
I remember these. Used to peel the breading off, eat it, and then eat the fish with lots of tartar sauce. Bet you can't peel the breading off today's fish-mush-sticks and have anything left.
They come out the best in a deep fryer but I learned a trick from a friend where you bake them and then when they are done you take them out and then fry them in some unsalted butter
It’s been a while since I’ve bought fish sticks, and living in a land locked state, brand selection had been limited. IF I decide to try them this winter, will look for Gorton’s based on your review. Thanks. And btw, I used to slather them in tarter sauce as a kid!
I remember as a kid putting 4 or 5 fish sticks on a couple slices of Wonder Bread with a slice of Kraft Cheese and Tarter Sauce for a Gordens Fish Stick Sandwich. Great video today.
I remember Mrs. Pauls from the 60s. These companies have cheapened their products over the years to the point they are crap.Mrs. Pauls used to have a big chunk of fish. Shame what many companies have done since the 60s.
THE FISH STICKS SERVED IN SCHOOL DURING THE 60's WERE AWESOME. NOW .... FUGGITABOUTIT !
Mrs Paul’s was the best. Now it’s dried out tasteless and sticks to pain
Review fish fillets. There's quite a few in the market
Omg, thank you for admiting to ketchup & fish sticks as a kid! My husband thinks I'm weird, or that I made that up! 😂
I loved fish sticks as a kid. I have not had them in forever.
Same here.
Good review, thanks for sharing, God bless !
We don't buy the sticks anymore and try to get whole filletsfish portions the battered seems to be lighter with the coating. If I do get the sticks I look for the ones not made with minced fish or I just make my own.
Since going on keto the breading is out. I used to eat them with chili sauce.
Spot on review! I have a box of the Mrs. Paul's in the freezer and they are EXACTLY as described in the video. The best frozen fish sticks I've had came in a giant bag I got from Costco. But I'm no longer a member or have one near. So in the future, looks like fish sticks are off the menu!
Here in the UK they're called fish fingers. Birdseye hold the title for the best, usually the COD variety (not minced)
I'd love some cod fish fingers to make tacos. Here in the US, I think all fish sticks are pollock and/or whiting. Chopping up the breaded cod filets for tacos seems wrong (and they would likely fall apart too much - might try it anyway)
If anyone made a fish stick or breaded fillet that didn't have half fish paste I'd start buying them.
Grew up eating fish sticks with Mac n cheese
Bro admits he’s paying extra for better quality with Gorton’s and gives them the same score as Mrs. Paul’s. Total LOLCOW moment.
I remember growing up eating them with ketchup. You had to have the ketchup.
The one review below on the Horton's fish filets for sandwiches is great
I seen this interesting documentary on TV about this enormous, giant ship that floats off the coast of Alaska. It’s basically one giant fish processing plant. They catch the fish live on the ship. Process the fish on the ship and package and ship everything out from the ship. They got hundreds of people working on there, with a big ass cafeteria. I wanna say the ship was owned by Gorton’s or tied to Gorton’s in some way
I saw something about this. The workers switch out every so many months.
It's called a fish factory ship.
Yep, some factory ships also make the imitation crab. And other products too.
Several years ago, our local Food Lion had “Young’s” frozen fish products. A UK based company that sold British style “Fish & Chips” like you’d find in a pub. Beer battered. They were not minced fish. Great quality.
Can’t find them anywhere now. Gorton’s will have to do for now. Mrs Paul’s is nearly as good.
Fish sticks was something Mom always served during Lent. I hated them then and haven't eaten them since I moved out, more than 40 years ago.
My favorite is Member's Mark Beer Battered Cod Fillets, Frozen at Sam's club when it comes to frozen fillets.
I long ago stopped buying frozen fish sticks (or "fillets") because the ratio of breading to fish is far too high. Perhaps my memory is faulty (I'm 62) but it seems to me that frozen fish sticks were much better 20+ years ago. As others have noted only the Gortons fish fillets for sandwiches might be worth purchasing if you're trying to create something like McDonalds Filet-o-Fish sandwich at home but otherwise none of the frozen, breaded or battered, fish products are worth the cost.
I had some last night and it was delicious!
The Gortons brand from Sam's are huge fish sticks and have 3 times the fish in them
Fish sticks were too lower-class for my European parents, escaped from what had become Eastern Bloc territory: Dad was a successful doctor and he and Mom were raised upper middle class before war made them poor for many years. I started eating fish sticks occasionally once I was on my own. They struck me as so-bad-it’s-good food.
But I’ve been an insulin-dependent diabetic since 1970, and the breading just raises my blood glucose too much! I don’t trust the oil they’re fried in, either. With fish sticks it’s usually impractical to remove any of the breading , whereas it’s usually not too difficult with actual pieces of fish. Also, the breading makes them taste better.
My rule of thumb for frozen food: if grams of carbohydrate per serving is anywhere near the sum of the grams of fat and the grams of protein, avoid it. If the carbs are higher, forget it exists.
Try a fillet of Cod with a little cornflour. Spray some olive oil cooking spray on it and use an air fryer to cook it. Making it at home is so much better.
Great advice on the carb count. For homemade "breaded" I've lately been using pork rind "panko" and it works pretty well, particularly in the air fryer.
Here in the U.K. there called fish fingers and I love them , but you need to buy a decent brand
I like Gorton's. They're handy for busy days and I cook them in my air fryer.
Thanks Larry ❤
I just had Mrs. Paul's Fish filets 2 days ago. Air Fried to perfect crunch.
I've made fish tacos with them. It's good. But I used Gordon's and it was the sandwich ones
The Gorton tilapia fish sticks are great
Gortons beer battered filets are the mad note.
I use only Tartar Sauce on fish. Never Ketchup. Gorton's also has frozen fish portions to make your own Filet-O-Fish sandwich. Really good and worth a try.
I did a taste test myself try the store brand Walmart brand fish sticks and another kind the store brand in my opinion is better than the name brand!! Guarantee you're going to find the same thing it's like there's more fish in the store brand ones! Try it out
Gortons has always been my go to
i get the Walmart brand.
They're fish sticks... not gourmet dining.
$4.48 for 44 of them.
They taste fine
I buy the Walmart Great value brand fish sticks and fish fillets. They're good and cost less than $4 where I live. As far as I can recall, the local stores don't even sell Mrs. Pauls. It's Fisher Boy, Gortons, Van de Kamps, or Great Value or nothing.
This was often a go-to for when Mom was too tired to cook.
Solid meat (fillet) fish sticks are about 1x10^6 times better than the minced kind. Minced fish is the fish equivalent for a "formed meat slurry".
Agree. Any thinner you could read through them. They used to be much thicker. Not worth it.
Wow I'm pretty old (64 😋) and I remember my mom making fish sticks for dinner. No idea the brand. We had them with ketchup too
When I was little, my sister and I ate fish sticks w/ macaroni and cheese! We grew up on the Gordon’s Fish Sticks. After seeing this video, I always thought it was “Gordon’s” not “Gorton’s”
HELL YEAH BROTHER YOU TELL THOSE DAMN FORMED MEAT SLURRY CONCOCTIONS
tar tar or cocktail sauce helps
Fish sticks over there make our fish fingers look like orange fish jenga blocks... :P
Thanks yo
Both are BOGO this week at the Publix near me, so I needed to see this… I mean, TBT - Gorton’s would have ended up in my cart either way 🤫
The fish taco sounds interesting.
Do one on frozen fish breaded filets
I would not have thought of making a fish stick salad with those.
"Gorton is SERIOUS about quality."
Wal-Mart - 2.9 out of 5 stars
Yup, DAT'S GORTON QUALITY right there!
I don't buy minced fish fishsticks as a rule. Gorton's has good fillet based products.
I love the Gordons fish sticks with cocktail sauce.
I've only tried the Gorton's brand
The fish sticks I remember were at least twice the size of the ones reviewed in this video. As to cost, I don't know. Kids usually don't how much mom or dad pay for something.
I'm a fan of Fisherboy fishsticks 120ct. for $7.99. Yes I know they're basically breading with a little bit of fish. But I still think they're delicious. I'm just upset our local Wal-Mart doesn't carry them and the closest one that does is almost 2 hours drive from our home.
Yeah, it sure ain't worth driving 2 hours for breadsticks with essence of fish.
The big bags of Fisherboy are my favorite. They cook up nicely in the air fryer. A plate of those with some crispy crowns and I’m in heaven.
The ultimate fishstick they sell at Costco are the best frozen fish sticks I've ever had you should try them
Isn't there a law against false advertising? Both of those brands blatantly lie about the amount of fish in the stick! I think they each have an 1/8 inch plank of fish inside all that breading. Having said that, I have Gorton's fish sticks in my freezer and I do them in the air fryer occasionally. I think they taste good and make a decent imitation of a McDonald's fish filet sandwich. Thanks!
Try the ultimate fish sticks from Costco
I just want fish sticks now
Same😂
Good boy
👍👍👍👍👍
Ive had fishsticks in salad. I'd let them cool first, or use them like that as leftovers right out of the fridge
The best frozen fish I've found is Trader Joe's frozen fish nuggets. Very tasty!
I loved Mrs Paul's fish but it disappeared from our area a number of years ago I buy Gorton's and Van de kamp I didn't know that Mrs Paul's was still available
I'm surprised you didn't include the Great Value fish sticks in your review.
We like the beer battered filets for sandwiches
I thought there’s another big brand with a blue box…
Nice
I don't like fish. But I do eat fish sticks with ketchup. I want to eat some fish for the health but idk what I'm doing lol
No Van De Kamps, moot BEST.
Mr,Wolfe pit. Been some time since I had a fish stick?? The videos 📹 are great 👍
Thanks 👍
I just got a box of Mrs Paul's last night!
😅the oils scared me ..
The best fish sticks are from Costco, made from whole filets, not minced fish.
Minced fish you wouldn't get that in the UK all our fish 'fingers' are at the least made up of bits of full fish, can you get battered fish sticks too in the US?
I've only seen Gortons at the stores I have around me, Even still I just buy Fisherboy brand if I want fish sticks.
Try deep fried!
