    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
    Danielle (Drew Barrymore) meets the prince (Dougray Scott) at the river and gets to know him better.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
    Andy Tennant directed this Cinderella variant. The Brothers Grimm arrive at the home of a wealthy Grande Dame (Jeanne Moreau) who speaks of the many legends surrounding the fable of the cinder girl before telling the "true" story of her ancestor. In flashback, the story then focuses on eight-year-old Danielle, daughter of a wealthy widower, a 16th-century landowner. After returning to France with his new wife Rodmilla (Anjelica Huston) and her two daughters, he dies of a heart attack. Ten years later, Danielle (Drew Barrymore) is now treated as a servant by the trio. Fortunately, she has an encounter with Prince Henry (Dougray Scott), who is fleeing an arranged marriage. Later, when Danielle poses as a Lady, the Prince takes an interest in her. Inventor-artist Leonardo da Vinci (Patrick Godfrey), accepting the French court's patronage, offers advice to Prince Henry on matters of the heart. George Fenton's music adds an accompaniment to the lush look of this period romance.

      He's use to having everything handed to him being the Crown Prince of France. While most young woman would swoon over him....she doesn't. And outright challenges him....Henry never had to deal with someone angry him...besides his mother. This what makes Danielle more perfect for him....she challenges him....he makes him a better person because they contrast each other but share common interest. So it makes them falling in love much more believable.

    This movie is perhaps my favorite depiction of the Cinderella story. It has depth in it, not just magic or just the baseline of the story. It is fun to watch and I love the actors in this movie for bringing it to fruition. I really love it and I wish I could buy it somewhere... the chances of that happening are so slim that the thought make cry a little.

    • @DelinahLovesHouseBunnies
      @DelinahLovesHouseBunnies 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Oh, no! I didn't know you couldn't get DVDs shipped out of the US/Canada to other countries! What about buying it used from a private owner on eBay? Do they have the same restrictions? This is so sad. 😿🐛

    • @nilelarsson4973
      @nilelarsson4973 6 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      It's not that I can't ship it. It's just that I can't watch it because the DVD file has the restriction of region 1, which means it's only watchable if I have a DVD from Canada/USA that can read the electronic format. If I don't then no matter how many DVDs I buy I will still not be able to watch it. That's why hate technological restrictions. Btw, even if went through the trouble of buying a DVD from another country they would probably reconstruct the electronics to be in accordance of the country I live in... Which isn't a solution either.

    • @DelinahLovesHouseBunnies
      @DelinahLovesHouseBunnies 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Oh, man, now I fully understand why you sadly said "slim chances" in your first comment. That's not fair! Do they do that to try to prevent bootlegging and pirating? 👢🗡 From what I understand, there are still oodles of each of those, so I don't think it's working. Although, it's possible that without those tech restrictions, there would be way more bootlegging, I suppose. Or does it have to do with international copyright or intellectual property agreements? 📜 I don't understand why they do that, although I'm sure there must be a reason that's important to the corporations and their profits. How unfortunate that it causes problems for movie lovers like yourself. 🎞
      I'll take one last crack at solving this. 🏏 If you click on "SHOW MORE" under "Movieclips" at the top, it lists several ways to buy the movie digitally, streaming: "BUY THE MOVIE:
      FandangoNOW - www.fandangonow.com/details/m...
      iTunes - apple.co/1ALusDq
      Google Play - bit.ly/1Q3K3W6
      Amazon - amzn.to/1eNumS7"
      Will any of these work for you, or do these streaming forms have similar technology restrictions in your country? After that, all that's left is pirating. So I hope one of the above versions will work for you, although I have a sinking feeling they won't. They could have region 1 coding, too.
      So, if you bought a used DVD player, or a DVD-playing computer or laptop, off eBay from Canada or the US, they wouldn't allow it past your border, or they would open it up and reconfigure it for region 6, or whatever your region is? Or it just wouldn't work in your country? But there are outlet adapters, and laptops can run on battery. A US DVD player could play region 1 DVDs, right? I don't understand the extent of these technological restrictions. 👩🏿‍💻 ////Bunny kisses for all!

      Yes, a countess would do a dignified courtier's bow (or curtsey), but she would not throw herself onto her hands and knees with her head down, as 'commoners' in this movie are shown to do, including Danielle, who does just that when Henry takes her horse in an earlier scene. Clearly, Danielle started to do that out of habit in this scene, which is why she ended up in the water.

    I never was into lovie dovie fairytale stories until, until my girlfriend, now wife tricked me into seeing this beautiful movie on release in the late ‘90s. Rare in being mostly authentic in rapier/dagger work, horse gear, shot on location, dress, castles, some realities of rural work and those wonderful quotes from Utopia, then throw in Da Vinci into this rich tapestry. Definitely a re-watchable classic that makes one appreciate and value love and justice for all, just don't tell my mates, OK.

    This remains my favorite movie. And I keep thinking back to the reason, and it's this: it's sweet! It's innocent! The characters are likeable and noble, not selfish and all about beauty. Danielle is strong and independent and not just for herself but for the people she loves. She rescues more than the prince does. They never make movies like this nowadays; they're always trying to go for the dark, gritty, grimy side of life, instead of this side, which is the one I want to go to the movies for anyway! Whatever team created this gem needs to do it again!

      I agree. I love that they didn't make Danielle weak. There's beauty in her strength and character after her father had passed. Same sentiment. It's so layered. Much goodness in this film: the setting, the period, the protagonists, the passion, the characterization of sensibility, independence, and innocence of a female, and when confronted with a suitor. It's also romantically serendipitous and charming and benevolent. A rare gem. A classic, no doubt !!
      " Never been kissed" is not as layered but it's really good too.

    There is only one think I hate about this movie - when the baroness tells the prince that Danielle is going to marry a Belgian. You FOOL! Belgium was only founded in 1830 and this is set in the Renaissance! They should have said she was going to marry a Fleming (Flanders was independent then and later became a part of Belgium). It would have made sense! We were one of the richest places on earth at that time, so the beautiful and noble "Nicole" marrying some Flemish aristocrat, wealthy merchant or banker would have been historically accurate.

    • @joycechuah6398
      @joycechuah6398 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Loretta DG true, it is not historically accurate, but I see less people complaining about this fairy tale, when compared to movies like Dracula.

      My only problem with this movie is: why didn't Danielle say "yes, I am living as a servant but actually my father was a freaking baronet"?

    • @sadee1287
      @sadee1287 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@antoniacosmai6670 Her father WASN'T a baronet. He was, at the most, a landowner merchant (and I'm not knocking it -- merchants could be very wealthy and have extensive property and servants, etc.), BUT no title. Hence the baroness (who was a baroness from her PREVIOUS marriage) calling Danielle a "commoner" -- as well as Marguerite telling Jacqueline Danielle couldn't go to the ball because she wasn't of noble blood. As for her mother, Nicole de Loncret, she wasn't nobility either. Danielle just tacked the "Comtesse" on to her mother's name in the moment, because she was being questioned by the Prince about who she was, and as she was trying to pass herself off as a courtier to enter the palace grounds to save Maurice, she HAD to tell him she was titled, or she would have been found out (as Gaston warned her) and put in the stocks, or worse.
