What an absolutely wonderful interview. And I have enormous respect for her discussing the challenges she faced once she got to New York. A lot of people probably have experienced the same thing, like she says. Dennis and Bing do this very, very well.
We had the pleasure of being at Stephanie Blythe's recital at Carnegie Hall this week--a night we will cherish! She is the only opera singer we know who sings in English without making English sound like a foreign language. Maybe it has to do with growing up in Sullivan County and staying real! Looking forward to The Ring this summer in Seattle!
Her honesty is so touching! We live in an era where secrets and personal dilemnas are coming out and there is a greater understanding of psychological and emotional problems. But has anyone counted how many times she slaps her legs?
fantastic interview! just happened upon this YT channel tonight and am very very impressed. particularly interested to hear of SB's intend to focus on american/english song. yes, it is wonderful to fully appreciate all the nuances of the poetry of a song and for me, as an american this only happens when the text is english.
"It never affected my work." Well, God bless her, but THAT is what separates REAL talent from all the nervous, little self-centered wannabes. I think she has bern blest with something EXTRAORDINARY. I wish I had had her courage to work through -- and IN SPITE OF -- the anxiety. I might have done better, who knows? Her modesty and sincerity are phenomenal -- and frankly glorious.
She appeared in La Fille du Régiment at the MET last season. 25 years at the MET is a long time but theoretically there are enough roles for character mezzos/altos for her to go on singing until she is well into her seventies (health permitting of course)
What a delightful woman. And I'm so glad she shared her very personal experiences with anxiety and mental health issues. Very important.

So happy to hear her experiences of Haendel, and so many clear, inventive, beautiful ideas. An amazing, intelligent, perceptive artist.
I'm so glad she said that about singing in English in the USA. She's so brilliant.

good stuff :)
She began well, but the top self-destructed. Does she still sing?

Bing speaks like, 2% of the time
