That old gal didn’t even start to smoke until she was about two thirds the way down the track. Probably could drag it all the way around and back to the start!👍
The only time I’ve ever seen a big cat get close to maxing out power when pulling was a d8 2u ripping an uprooted 130ft Douglas fir out of a gully. The rootball stuffed into the bank and the cats winch had so much power it not only ripped the tree through the side of the bank but started to lift the trees top back up off the ground from the force. The motor lugged down to a few hundred rpm but never stalled, possibly one of the most unique sounds one could hear. Awesome video!!!!
When you are operating an antique cat you are also getting a workout because they have no hydraulic assist on the steering clutches or turning brakes or the flywheel clutch.
I’d have given about anything to have seen that I watched a 983 or 977 traxcavator SNAP a cable while trying to pull a tree stump - back when I was in grade school
That old machine gave no f^cks. She's been taken care of, obviously, but none of these will last forever, esp not the ones left to rot in the corner of some field. Props to whomever fount this unit and restored it to the point where it can still show us what it was all about, today.
They must have done this for the kids in the audience, to break the monotony. We know that big of a Cat dozer is going to pull that. It would probably pull twice that weight.
As if a modern D8 wouldn’t pull it just as easy. Heck, with a modern one the operator would be chilling in an air conditioned cab sipping coffee and playing on their phone while pulling.
At an antique tractor pull I watched a #60 Caterpillar pull the sled out of the gate with the judge running after him waving his flag. Operaror never looked back! LOL

I work on these, the newer ones may be more fuel efficient, but are way more problematic. There’s a reason the US military uses 1970’s era D7’s. They aren’t really working until they start black stacking, they are completely mechanical and almost impervious to EMP attacks. That’s how you know it’s producing power. The new ones, if they start black stacking the engine is on the verge of GONE, and I’ve seen new cats turned into a $1 million dollar paper weight with a lightning strike.
I agree with you, the music was terrible 👎!! When I was younger I used to work on them, get a cut and I would bleed Cat Yellow 🙀🤠! Always loved them ❤️💓👍🤠 I
I drove a D8 highdrive Cat and by accident left the Ripper down on the backend, it tore up the concrete a metre thick and the motor never dropped a rev and just kept ripping!! It wasnt until some mechanics started waving frantically that i realised something was wrong!!! Lol. 200 metres of total destruction!!! Lol.
I get so tired of tractor pull videos that do not show where the weight box is. That's the most important part of the pull - when is the box all the way over the sled. Also how much weight is in the box? That changes for each class. I saw a weight being moved. Is this Cat pulling a light box or a heavy box? That would be good to know.
I've said for 40 years, who needs a 200,000 dollar, multi engine, 10,000 rpm truck to do this, just get a 3000 dollar 1960 caterpillar and pull 3 sleds sideways.
That D8 took the pull in stride, barely an exhaust plume till there at the end, a hell of a work cat!!
that exhaust plume is because the Cat Diesel was starting to build up power
Very interesting and impressing indeed!
😃👍
Too bad the sound of that Cat was spoiled by the crappy music!
Very annoying!
Yes I agree cut the crappy music let the Cat sing
Couldn’t agree more but that seems to be the trend now.
There are people who aren't big fans of pulling who got dragged to the pull by big fans. The music is to keep them entertained.
@@threynolds2 well we obviously have different opinions on what is entertaining.
Those two track pins were determined not to free up :o)

The Dozer has power and huge traction……..impressive !
And that's just a little dozer, hook up a D11 and it could probably pull half a dozen, lol.
Slow and steady is the course of the day.......full pull !!
Awesome . Simply amazing the power a D8 can put on the ground . Used to watch them work for hours when i was a kid .
Sounds like you had an exciting childhood.
Cant beat old cats. Love them!
Did you ever see a KWM Leopard 2 doing this?

seen cat d6 power out ripping at my place just stopped dead he had to ri that area twice to get the depth.
Torque and traction.... all this black smoke belching screamin demon stuff is fun, but NOTHING can beat torque and traction.
Gearing and weight in this situation. If the cat had twice as much power it could have gone twice the pace ( half as slow).
He had to stop at the state line... 😮
Coast.
Effortlessly, Good ol reliable power. Machines of the past will run forever. That is a time when America took pride in our equipment

Couldn’t hear the cat for the background music.
We used to farm with a 3T D7 and a 14A D8 in the 70's. I will never forget that sound.
She’s settling in track deep too!
I cannot imagine the stresses on the pulling chain and tractor gearbox. My gosh!
My thought also. I wonder if a tow chain has ever failed at these events?
That chain is a lethal weapon
And it didn't look all that heavy either, add a couple of hinged shackles and yep an accident waiting to happen
They must have done this for the kids in the audience, to break the monotony. We know that big of a Cat dozer is going to pull that. It would probably pull twice that weight.

The ol' CAT never even broke a sweat!
That D8 just confirmed that older is better. What age is it. I am guessing at least 70 yrs. young!

Indeed
that should be their slogan
It's on tracks. What did you think?
Oliva
Not fast, not new, and not stopping!
Big up for the chain😂
yeah, I wouldnt stand near the front of that sled. I've seen a railroad engine snap the chain we kept on the switch engine. Better safe than sorry.
Hey, just watched this again! The Cat is definitely an old timer with the main drive clutch being a hand clutch!
GREAT PULL! probably could have ran a ripper tooth behind it as well! Great job!
It could maybe have pulled several sleds.

For that old Cat, that was a walk in the park .
I've owned 3 D8H's there's nothing Finer !
One thing's for sure. That was the slowest full-pull I've ever seen.
Look for the Case150 pull video. (It's a replica of a 1904 Case steam tractor.)
The good ol' tortoise and hare story.
This was the second series d8 that cat produced. Remember the top rpm of that engine was around 900 . Nothing sounds better.
I had a 9G as my first dozer ever. Same thing, low rpm engine. Maybe 1100-1200rpm I think.

Agreed. Half the fun of a Tractor Pull is the sound.
