As a white dude, I know a lot of caucasian middle class Americans aren't taught very well about racism, and it's uncomfortable to think that your personal actions and what you thought was "the way of the world" is actively hurting and oppressing people. But the fight for equality is not about bringing us down, it's about making us all better. If someone comes to you and tells you "That thing you're doing is disrespectful, hurtful, and a tool of racism," you then have enough understanding to allow you to research and make a choice. Do you alter your actions and become a better neighbor and friend? Or do you knowingly do the wrong thing? Only the second option *makes* you racist; hate is a choice. Many changes cost nothing but some thoughtfulness to make.

That white lady is super annoying and I disagree with everything she’s saying. With that said, I think her mispronunciation of Kamala’s name is not intentionally defiant. I base this assumption on the way she corrected herself and pronounced it right the first time she was corrected and it was pronounced for her to repeat. She repeated it properly and wasn’t defiant. But since she has a way she’s always pronounced it, it’s hard to reprogram her brain to a different way of pronouncing without more intentional practice. Especially when it’s a subtle difference in accent emphasis - kàmala vs kamàla. It’s not like it’s kah-mala vs Kay-mala or something more overt. The reason she said “I’ll pronounce how I want!” was a defense mechanism to being corrected over and over and being frustrated at her inability to get it right. So she lashed out with that disrespectful statement, really trying to say “don’t tell me what to do!”… where yeah, if she were more mature she’d say “I’m sorry I’m trying”.
But these cnn debates aren’t designed to cultivate that type of civility. They’re intended to fuel drama and hostility. Mission accomplished. They got their clip!

The first day, I instructed them to write their name on paper, tented placards on their desk, and beneath their names, to phonetically write it English, so I learned out of RESPECT to the students to pronounce their names correctly. One young man said a high school teacher told him his name was too difficult to pronounce, so the teacher (white) called him "Bob," and he used that name for years. I said that was an insult and for him to feel pride in his name and teach people how to pronounce his actual name correctly. America is no longer predominantly European immigrants, so people need to step-up and learn how to pronounce names "unfamiliar" to them.
