    I always took consent from professors before I recorded anything. Always make sure that the other person knows that you are recording the discussion. In my case it was almost a norm. Many PhD students would all put their audio recording devices right in front of the professor and go back to their seats. We were all recording the discussions simultaneously. During one-on-one meetings, in fact, my adviser would always ensure that the discussion is being recorded. He asked me to record the discussions. Now do not confuse recording of work related discussions with normal conversations. I am only referring to work related discussions in classes and offices. Hope the privacy and consent related concerns are now put to rest!

    This guy is Legend. Professor, I left you a message in Instagram. Please reply. I just moved to Austin, Texas for work after watching your videos.

    • @DesiAmericanProfessor
      @DesiAmericanProfessor  4 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      I do not check instagram messages sir. I used to early on but then it got flooded with so many messages that I could no longer keep up. Moreover, if I respond once, people think that I will keep on engaging in chats with them regularly. I could have done that too, but when you get thousands of messages, it is not possible. Then when people who got a response earlier, do not get a response again later, they get angry at me. It is not that I do not want to talk or help people. The thing is that I have a full time job to work for. I am only a time pass youtuber. Please watch my video on Cobra effect Sir. I explain it in detail there. I came on TH-cam and started making videos only because I was not in a position to help 10-15 students individually. I thought that if I post videos, I can help many more people and won't have to feel guilty of not spending time at an individual level. But instead, the individual messages increased even more. So kindly forgive me if I did not respond to you there. I do not open and see my instagram chat.

      @@DesiAmericanProfessor Thanks for responding to my message. I feel grateful. You have a logic behind why people may get frustrated from the chat section because there could be so many chat threads from so many people on Instagram. I reached out because you are slowly inspiring me to continue a Ph.D. in Computer Information System and Management. Recently, I completed my Master's in CS, still playing PubG type game(as you can see from my channel), and working as Software Developer in Austin, Texas. Now my next request is, would you be willing to be my Ph.D. advisor? The level at how you empathize a student's situation is truly invaluable. I will update you soon with a copy of my resume and other details. Thank you. FYI, I want to be the first person to get into Ph.D. from the youtube comment section, LOL. Trying to hustle like you.

      Thank you for such a kind message Sir. If you are interested in PhD in Information Systems, you should go for it. That said, I would recommend going for someone better established in the field. An experienced mentor is very valuable. He/She will guide you through research as well as the job market. Being student of a credible established researcher helps a lot. I am still a junior faculty. I do not recommend taking a junior faculty as your dissertation chair.

    Dr. Sambhara, great content. About conversation recording, hopefully you were in a single party consent state (recording allowed without other person's consent if you are a part of the conversation). But if you are in CA, CT, FL, IL, MD, MA, MT, NH, PA, or WA, the other party must have consented for the recording to be legal! Inter-state communication recording is even more complicated.

    My dear Prof CS: It's an amazing presentation. You call those mistakes...eating 2 donuts? Here...talk about 4 or more with Pizza, hamburgers etc. etc...in one sitting... along with good old...daaru. I did all that. Those are good habits actually. (After I read during those times in my M.S. and PhD that one dude had dropped dead during his 5 miles daily run, I quit whatever exercises I was doing sporadically.) Then to my horror...I realized that I not only hated...but abhorred my Engineering jobs to..death. Life didn't make any sense to me. I started writing fiction Novels...during my lunch breaks and down times. I passed the civil service exam and joined the County Government in Social services...Negotiating and writing contracts for grants to non profits. I liked dealing with humans and their issues rather than machines. And... I had gotten my U.S. citizenship.

    I a just ordinary India with nothing special in me. What I like in this video was that the professor stressed on prioritizing your health..I am 51 + now and the last time I had a sumptuous ice cream - the last, was in 2001 around 500 ml of it. I recently celebrated my "20 yrs" of not having a complete "sugar laden" ice cream. This is just an example . The only time I don't have a control on my taste buds is - during the mango season. I dont go to any gym or do any rigors work outs - but only a few pull ups and some running/brisk walking 30 mins for 3 to 4 times week. Believe me - if your diet is under control ( more important than doing exercise regularly) - everything is under control. All of you , please eat healthy and stay healthy.. Thank you
