  • A look behind David Blaine’s VIP Live Pre Show performance. San Diego on May 6th, 2018. He allowed us to record a couple of card tricks, and it was amazing! He is the best magician in the world in my opinion and is the reason that I first got interested in magic.
“David Blaine is the greatest magician who ever lived.” Howard Stern made that on-air proclamation, a sentiment echoed by Penn Jillette of Penn and Teller, who referred to David’s Street Magic as “the best TV magic special ever done.” He was just twenty- three when Street Magic first aired on ABC, transforming televised magic by turning the camera on the audience. Spectators at home could feel the visceral reaction of people being astonished. The New York Times went on to declare that David had “taken a craft that’s been around for hundreds of years and done something unique and fresh with it,” while The New Yorker prominently stated “he saved magic.”

@@cincinnatibob37 I can completely understand that and would prefer not to have added the additional cards/subscribe buttons that end up blocking parts of the video. I tried putting them at the very end, but unfortunately, those things make a huge difference when it comes to TH-cam's algorithm, and how many views a video will get. I' ve done quite extensive testing, and the difference it makes is quite astonishing. I mean obviously none of my videos are monetized, but I still wanted as many people that were interested to be able to see the video. I actually uploaded it twice, once with the advertising at the end, and once without. If you take a look you can see the pretty significant difference in the amount of views from the exact same video clip. Anyways, sorry if that took away from the viewing experience, I gain nothing from uploading a video such as this, just wanted to share!

I am 28, but getting to watch Blaine perform two feet from me made me feel like a kid again lol. No doubt! He truly is amazing, and is the main person who got me interested in magic as a child. Watching him on TV back in like 2000 just blew my mind, and made me want to be able to do things like that. 18 years later and I still can't, but I was glad that I was able to experience this up close performance, along with his live show, that I would highly recommend. I am mainly a fan of card/close up magic, but I still enjoy his "Stunts" and stage performances as well. He was just a super nice guy, and it was an awesome experience from start to finish.

Alex Madsen I recorded this. Unfortunately even though I was holding the phone horizontally it uploaded as if I was recording vertically. I’m not too sure why.

What trick did he do when the phones were off

I don't really know the names of all the tricks he performed, but he spent a good 30-40 minutes with the small group of people prior to the official show. He did one trick that I believed he performed on Ellen or a variation of that trick. He put a card under someones watch, and just did some other great stuff. I am a magician myself, although not a very good one lol, and even though I know at least part of the method used to complete the tricks, I was still blown away.

I thought he was looking through the deck multiple times so he could memorize it and then blow their minds with another trick, but he just forgot the king of hearts was already taken. Lol

lol he did make a mistake, but he did blow everyone's mind with the next few tricks he performed when cameras were off! I am somewhat of a magician, and know many of the techniques used to get the effect and I still was blown away! Even standing right there and watching him closely, his sleight of hand is insane! Even a basic double lift I couldn't see even though I know that what he was doing for many of the tricks. It was a great experience no doubt!

How long will the general public remain unaware of the double lift?

Forever lol, I mean anyone who has never done any type of card magic is not going to pick it up, well if it's done properly. It's such a simple trick, but so effective, and yeah I would think by the 3rd time most people would begin figuring it out lol, but his double lift is also pretty amazing and flawless.

I can totally understand, although I personally was doing my best to hold my phone without looking at it, while still enjoying the moment and capturing a little something to look back on later. This also was just a short part of the card tricks he performed where cameras were allowed, but if you notice at the end he asks everyone to turn their cameras off. I get you though, it drives me crazy when say at a concert and many people are just watching/listening through their phone screen. Anyways, I am glad I got to record this little segment to share/as well as look back on myself and still fully enjoyed the experience.

Imagine what David would do if when he wasn’t able to find the king of hearts the little girl told him to check under his watch.(If he was wearing one)
