Fred Cory That was not tobacco....all kidding aside, it is extraordinary given that as a wind instrument player, Aurele was one of the best, but he lived at a time when smoking was not only culturally acceptable, but expected! While I don't know if he suffered COPD or any other respiratory ailments, he died at 90! just this year. Did the smoking affect his playing?
Some criticized Karl Richter for his need to smoke but if we consider the pressure a performer has, especially a great performer, then we realize some defense mechanism must be used to protect the psyche yet permit the artist to move forward - to perform on the world stage. And, as you said, it was a time when it was "not only culturally acceptable, but expected" that one smoke. In fact, most young people started the habit which would last a lifetime. We may congratulate ourselves that we are more enlightened - but are we? Do we not have our little needs met by some little habit or other?
