An early clue to Gilbert's ambition for ghosts to walk on stage came 10 years earlier in "The Sorcerer" (1877) when the spirits are invoked "Appear! Appear! Appear!". However they did not actually appear and it seems Sullivan had no enthusiasm for such supernatural content, and even refused to cooperate with Gilbert's later plot idea that involved a magic lozenge. But here in "Ruddigore" (1887) Sullivan has acquiesced to Gilbert filling Act 2 with a whole dynasty of singing ghosts, the keyword now being "Beware! Beware! Beware!". The specter of Sir Roderic Murgatroyd (Donald Maxwell, baritone) is in splendid voice in this performance and he could believably have been in life "a god-like youth" who charmed Dame Hannah.
My Favorite G&S opera with the Yeomen, met Maxwell at Buxton G&S Festival last summer.

I must admit I quite liked how they portray the Ghosts of Ruddigore as a drug induced hallucination.
I wish the excerpt had shown the ghosts walking out of their frames - I'd like to see how they did it.
Even though I saw a stage production, I don't remember how they did it.
I don't know who posted this, but this is NOT "The Ghosts of Ruddigore". This is a recording of a full scale performance of Ruddigore at the Buxton G&S Festival. The Ghosts of Ruddigore is Opera della Luna's version of the show with only 7 in the cast. This is not it.
Actually they aren't ghosts, due to a legal technicality.
I'm surprised my old mate Richard Gauntlett didn't use one of the funniest lines W S Gilbert ever wrote:
'Carry off a lady?! Certainly not! I may be a bad Bart., but I'm not as bad a Bart as all thart!'
They are ghosts... they come to life at the end and marry people
@jonathan titterton -- I don't like that at all. These are GHOSTS. Shades. Spirits. Haints. Specters. Spooks. The ghostly zombies are a great touch. This is a Gilbert & Sullivan horror-fantasy, and you take it at face value. It was meant to be creepy and funny at the same time. Due to Gilbert's twisted logic, they all come back to life. But they don't ALL marry life people. Only one does, and that's Sir Roderick. Boy, I'd sure hate to see what the family tree looks like after this! Oh, Heavens to Murgatroyd!
Not bad, but Opera North's was much better, with daft silent film footage, some superb casting and OTT ghosts cavorting with skeletons. Even my fellow-countrymen, who can't understand G&S, would have enjoyed it. Unfortunately Richard Angas, who turned the (normally boring) old servant into a sort of axe-wielding Boris Karloff giant, has since died, so it won't be quite the same if they revive it.
Donald Adams was wonderful, best ever roderick murgatroyd,. We saw him many times with doyly carte, such a sad loss, he was.such a lovely gentleman to his fans too, he was fantastic in Gilbert and Sullivan For All concerts ,lovely man
