Injured Giant Bull Moose at rest
An injured bull rests and tries to mend when a younger bull comes down to check him out, forcing him out of bed. The next few minutes are interesting, body language between the two is subtle but sure; ear position, posturing, the two even touch noses at one point. But it is clear that the bigger bull is not to be messed with. This is accomplished with a look that sends the little bull dashing away. Enjoy and if you like, please subscribe!

What magnificent creatures. Love the old guy.
Years ago I watched a large group of elk in a national park right by the side of the road. (I know these aren't elk, but I have a story that's sort of like this one.) There were tons of tourists doing the stupid things and ignoring the signs and wandering right into the herd to take pictures but luckily the elk ignored them entirely. There were a number of cows, about fifteen or so, no calves, two really big males with full racks carefully ignoring each other from either side of the cows, another large bull in the bushes watching but not daring to come any closer, and one young bull with only a couple of tines to his antlers hanging out with the cows. It was all very peaceful. At one point, though, the youngest bull approached one of the large ones and they sort of just looked at each other... and the big one lowered his antlers and very gently sparred with the younger one. It was in slow motion, very quiet and with no animosity. It was like, "Here's how you do it, kid." I wish now I'd had the sense to video it... Anyway, loved this footage of these two moose. Thank you again for the high quality video!
I don't know how I missed this post, I'm sorry to be so late in responding. That is beautiful. We have a lot of footage of the older bull letting a young sprite spar with him. It's really something to witness for sure. In one of our videos (here) it's the legendary Hook of Anchorage bedded, with a youngster walking up to him to spar. It was so cool, Hook never stood up. Nature is a wow. Thanks for that story!

@@susanpaulson7445 doubtful; the older bull isn't old enough to have a son that age. But the older bulls will let a younger bull hang out with them so they may have that mentor/student type relationship.

What a beautiful show of respect by the younger bull to the elder, injured bull. Possible offspring? I'm sure that doesn't matter in their world past a certain point but it was a thought. Regardless a very cool moment captured
We often wonder ourselves but it's doubtful that this bull was mature enough to sire this 3-4 year old. However, there is an incredible amount of body language going on here. Kind of hard to see the eyes but definitely the ears speak volumes. And yes, these youngsters need to show respect to their elders; someone watched a younger bull plow through all the older bull's warnings and he got his comeuppance in the form of a nice, long rake down his side. Not beyond the hide, but he was taught a lesson for sure! Thanks as always for your insightful comments!

So that older bull, R? is Swagger. Injured in a fight with Left Hook (that LH lost but Swagger came out 3 legged lame). We want to be certain it's not Dennis...they are SO similar. We intend to look into that further.

Yes, odd antlers; single brow tines and very few points otherwise, but he has the attitude for sure, and he's intimidated many a bigger rack.

They kind of tell the story of these particular players. Swagger is a bull who will fight anything despite his lack of impressive antlers. We've followed him for 3 years and have watched him mature into a beast!

Almost akin to when a young kid tries to challenge an adult man.
Somewhat, but that never ends up well! Ha. Anyway, we've never seen a punk challenge an older bull, and this guy seemed much more respectful than challenging. We were touched by this unique demonstration/behavior.
The rut is over... you look at the weight lose of these bulls... During the rut a bull can loose 250lbs... this is one hurting bull; Very interesting to watch;;;; and after the rut...they are trying to put this lost weigh back on... it is common to see similar sized bull bunched up together... thank you for sharing.... VERY NICE
Thanks again. And right you are; the bulls are now actually gathering and eating together in the lull between the two ruts. There's a catch up rut in about another week and some. They lose a LOT of weight during the first one. Now they have to bulk up in order to get through the winter. Not an easy life.
I wondered that also. Man those are behemoth's.. those animals amaze me how tough they are.
Dennis Fant YES they are monsters.... hard to imagine and animal this big lives right in the nearby woods. I do hunt, but NOT for these big guys; I feel that these monsters are our breeding stock and they have worked and struggled hard life to get this big...leave them be. When you look at this injured bull moose, you can see that he is low / down on weight. My guess 200+ lbs. During rut, bull moose and other ungulates eat minimal food... only drink lots of water. lol...when they create their piss-holes wallows (I call them) the need lots of urine…stinks like hell too Yah, if one is a true outdoorsman, you learn a lot from just watching animal behaviour… It has changed very little in the thousand years… OFTEN in the late fall and early winter, it is not uncommon to see multiple bulls gathered together.. I think the most I have seen is 10 bull moose in a 10 acre area… AMAZING

Interesting to watch these videos and try to guess at their body language. MooseMan, how do the males get on outside of the rutting season? Is this video outside of the rutting season?
Our videos of moose on dry land is during the rut when the bulls are in dry/hard rack (no more velvet). Outside the rut the bulls are pretty much loners, they disappear back up into the higher country after shedding their antlers, and dig in for the long winter, trying to conserve their energy by bedding a lot. Winter forage is not highly nutritious, and winters take their toll on them. Thanks for watching/asking.

Come to BC, Yukon or Alaska... I live in British Columbia...and I have seen 100s of moose...6-7 ft at the shoulders...then add another 2-3 ft of horn height; I would love to have a big ol moose as a horse....

@@KarawithaK Yes is is beautiful...but taking the time to truly enjoy the trip will make it worth while for sure... If and when you do travel, I hope you are able to chat with some people and ask "the question" where can you see moose... For myself, I have called in moose within 25 ft away. One has to be aware that the younger bull moose and cow(s) (some with calves) and sometimes during mating season can get a little agressive. Driving alone (in moose country) can also be hmmmm - lets just say, one needs to be aware that a moose might cross in front of you anytime. Me, I live in BC ... But I am planning a bit of a road trip throughout BC...then the Yukon..(maybe do some gold panning ;-) and then further through Alaska... Could take me 3-6 months... But it will be adventure for sure.. Yes Kara, just watching wildlife is AMAZING... Moose, well they are beasts... And I would love to hear your story of the 1st moose you see in the wild... your heart will be pounding I am sure of that.... cheers
Moose Racks I can imagine being within 25 feet of an animal of that size is so thrilling and very scary as well! That video I made of being way too close to two bull elk a couple weeks ago was terrifying and so exciting I couldn’t look away. That was during elk rut and I had never seen them fight in person. They cover ground so quickly and before I knew it, I was in the attack zone! So scary 😬

Not a threat at all, but the little guys can pester the older bulls. I was surprised how this ended up given that one bull was injured and just wanted to rest. Thanks for watching!

@@MooseManNaturePhotos I seen it on another TH-cam video a couple of younger white tails were sort of escorting a larger bull who was injured pretty badly.
Dont think that old bull has long to go....once spotted by a predator hes going to be in trouble.
He did fine; got through the rut and lived to tell about it. Lucky!

See this with elk. Most bulls will try and get far far away and hide from other bull if thay can can't fight.fighting when down but nature is strong thanks

Sorry, thought you were commenting on a different video. This injured bull was approached by a younger bull but because the older bull was so sore and weary, he didn't bother chasing the younger bull away, also since there were no cows around. Otherwise he would have.

Actually he is, he is lame on the left fore; he is the bull who was injured in the video of the fight I posted a month ago. It's called Bull Moose Fight. It's the one where the loser comes flying out of the trees and this one comes limping out three legged. He won the fight but was hurt so yes, he's injured.

We wondered but the older bull isn't really mature enough to have a son that age. Still, one wonders, right? There is a lot of interaction between these bulls other than sparring and fighting. We've seen demonstrations of respect as well as outright aggression. So cool to watch them just be themselves without humans altering their behavior.

It would be great to take bull calf and let him be raised by a good ole belgian mare. Then dehorn, and nuture , brake to harness , at 4yrs he could out pull a horse.
Jeffery Schirm they loose their antlers every year and they grow back in the spring. Would make an amazing work animal though
Dave Alexander yes I totally agree with you. I guide American hunters every fall here in British Columbia Canada for these amazing animals. Just saying they could do a lot of work because of the strength they have but yeah you could never get the wild out of them Cheers
