How are cars like this made? Do they have their own production line or does VW build them specially for each order? I heard that they cost hundreds of thousands to buy.
A bit of both what you said. The main chassis is the same as a normal Polo and comes from the normal production line, but the rest is fitted in the separate motorsports production, where only the rallycars ordered are built. Sadly Volkswagen stopped their Motorsports department, so no more Polo R5/Rally2 will be built.

Das ist nicht so einfach und funktioniert eigentlich nur über Mundpropaganda durch Einheimische oder das Team.
Das hauptgrund ist Raimund Baumschlager Polo und Fabia enwicklungstestpilot und seine BRR Taem

The first event is planned to be ADAC Rallye Deutschland in August 2018.

You must translate the word: „Ansauggeräusch“ from german in english than You know it;)
So it`s just air sucking noise. But very different from other turbochargers. This one sounded like brakes loosing grip
ALS. Polo WRC had similar. It's surprisingly different from Fabia.
Just write Skoda Fabia R5, it's the same sound hah :D
