Driving Around Chicago Ghetto - Woodlawn Neighborhood in 4k Video

Filmed on Sunday, July 23, 2023, I drive around Woodlawn in the south side of Chicago to see what's going on.
During the first half of the 20th century, Woodlawn was a middle class white neighborhood which grew out of the flood of workers migrating to the area. Many University of Chicago professors lived in Woodlawn.
During the 1950s, the African American population expanded into Woodlawn, causing anxieties and clashes, which was later described in the play "A Raisin in the Sun" and the book "Black Metropolis".
Woodlawn reached its peak population in 1960, when 81,279 people called it their home. By 1970, Woodlawn had lost 1/3rd of its residents, down to 53,820. Today, the population stands at 24,425.
After the death of Martin Luther King Jr, Chicago experienced a large amount of rioting. A rash of arsons destroyed 362 buildings between 1968 and 1971. Most business owners fled the area.
After a successful urban renewal project by the University of Chicago in adjacent Hyde Park, the University quickly began a second urban renewal project in Woodlawn. Today, the University's south campus occupies a few northern blocks of Woodlawn.
Woodlawn has an elevated level of crime compared with Chicago as a whole, with 79.9 violent crimes reported per 1,000 residents.
66% of adults report that they feel safe in their neighborhood "most or all of the time".
23% of housing units are vacant, and 40% of the population is living below the poverty line. The unemployment rate is 18%.
