Good video. Two years ago I made the decision to avoid Adobe (I'm a previous survivor of Premier) so got Pixelmator as an add-on to Apple Photos. So far I've been happy with it and with this upgrade it's becoming truly excellent.
dude, you are amazing. I have pixelmator pro for the past year (i'm not a graphic designer, but do some stuff lightly as hobby) but slowly learning it.
Thanks for showing the new features of Pixelmator - but calling it a Lightroom killer is a bit of a stretch - and looking at your workflow - it's a bit of a mess, but to each his own - no issue with your love for Pixelmator - just a little disingenuous tittle
The only thing that holds me back from switching is the file management system of lightroom. So far there's simply no alternatives. The ability to organise my photos in folders and collections from my NAS which automatically back up everything to my unlimited GoogleDrive. I hope some company would come up with a comprehensive alternative to lightroom so that I could stop paying adobe monthly.
Lightroom/ Photoshop bundle is hard to beat - I only need to sell one photo to cover the cost for the month so it's really not a big deal to me. I get not everyone is a fan of the cost - but I used to spend allot more upfront front just for Lightroom and forget Photoshop - was well over $900 here in Australia - so the $20 I pay gets me far more value than Netflix
@@DigiDriftZone I use a Synology 8bay NAS which has 48TB of storage. Then I use cloud sync on the NAS which mirror everything on my Google drive. Hence whatever changes I have made on the NAS including folder structure changes, renaming of files etc would be also mirror to my Google drive, unlike most back up solution where you have to back up manually. As for the unlimited Google drive it is no longer available as of today. I used to use Google business which gives you unlimited space. But now that Google has rebranded it to Google workspace I think you get 12TB per user in your enterprise ( which you can set up with your friends). I hope that’s clear enough!
I'll never understand why Pixelmator Pro is the only Data Asset Management software that lets you work with object layers!!! It is such a basic feature I can't understand why they won't bring this over to programs like Capture One Pro. It is a major update over LR. What I hated the most about LR is that I always had to bring everything over to Photoshop at some point. There was always something it couldn't do.
That’s why I don’t even bother with adobe They require you to use different apps for basic functions Color text background in AI ? Nope need to use InDesign It is pathetic
I want to have access to my photo library, but even the 2TB icloud package isn't enough for both my icloud files as well as the photos library. So one reason I use Lightroom, is to have an extra TB of storage, without affecting my iCloud storage. Is there some kind of solution for this with Pixelmator?
Editing workflow in Apple Photo seems weird to me. If I right click and open in Pixelmator Pro, then make changes, and even click Enable Sidecar File, the changes aren't stored. BUT if I double-click on image, then click Edit, click the triple-dots and select Pixelmator Pro, layers are tracked. Or am I doing something wrong? I would love to use the shortcut (command-return) on a photo in Apple Photos and have all of this work.
I mention this towards the end of the video. Save a side car file saves it external to the photo. File > Modify Original in Photos is how you save the changes back into the Photos app.
Life-as-a-Service sucks. Thanks for your videos. I recently switched to Apple Studio from a life of Windows and unfortunately Darktable was giving me issues with Mac. I wanted a Pay Once editor for my hobby and Pixelmator has really stepped in nicely. Your videos have really made the transition easy.
It depends on the kinds of edits you’re making. If you’re just doing color adjustments then they’re small. If you have a bunch of raster layers then all of those are stored in the Sidecar file and can get big.
Well, I started with a 14.6 MB raw file, made 2 colour adjustment layers, one masked, and found the .pxd-sidecar file was 95.7 MB. That was a pretty basic edit. Am I doing something wrong? Is it saving a full copy of the .pxpro file in the sidecar? I tried to duplicate your steps when opening and when saving.
Yessssssssss!!!! so I bought this app 7 years ago for like $29 and me Being and Adobe user gives me a big confidence I can rely on this app with out worrying about disgusting subscriptions from Adobe!
The only problem is that Pixelmator pro lacks a file management module, which means that the photographer takes a lot of repeated pictures, and it becomes difficult to choose the right photo to retouch. This means that functions such as scoring, photo comparison, material management, photo metadata modification, batch import, etc. can only rely on the finder on the Mac
How does a photo editor kill a photo management and organization software suite... this at best kills photoshop if you never use any of the advanced features, but it has nothing to do with lightroom unless you have no clue what lightroom is and only us it for 5% it's possible usage and 1% of it's intended usage...
All they need to do is add a better file management system in apple photos and I would be willing to swap over. Otherwise, I love Pixelmator and never want to touch photoshop again
Great video. I want to cancel Adobe but need an alternative to Lightroom to edit batches of photos. Do you know any alternatives or if Pixelmator supports something similar?
Lots of talk about killing things here! Kill! Kill! Kill! If you want to kill something, put a helmet on! Now I'll go back to my much appreciated Adobe Creative software!

where are the organisation? labeling? batch editing? export tools? etc etc
Batch editing is huuuuge, would never change to anything that doesn’t have this feature.
This is why I still miss Aperture.
dude, you are amazing. I have pixelmator pro for the past year (i'm not a graphic designer, but do some stuff lightly as hobby) but slowly learning it.
That is very interesting but how do you catalogue and keyword your photos?
One year later, no answer.
@MarkSmith-by7yh sorry. Not intentional. I use Photomator.

You need to have a course on Pixelmator Pro and if you have one already sign me up... Love your videos!!! 👊🏾
Thanks man! I really appreciate it. Out of curiosity, what platform would you expect a course to be on?
@@JosephSlinker TBH you could start with a basic overview, move into photo editing, shapes and add on as you go maybe?! Just thinking out loud! 🤷🏾♂

I find capture one pro to have a very cool file management system - very quick selection/previewing, rating etc.
Unlimited google drive? - can you elaborate please how you set your NAS up to do this?

wow! I need to learn more about sidecar ( I didn't even notice it)
Anyone think there will be a discount soon? Last one was November which was 50% off. My trial ran out yesterday.
Keep an eye on it. They usually have discounts through the year every few months.
Can we add folders without having to add to the cloud library yet?
I think you'll appreciate tomorrow's video. 😁
I'm actually cancelling my Adobe subscription as well. I'm an artist, and between Clip Studio & Pixelmator Pro I can do everything I need to.

I think you'll like tomorrow's video. 😁 It's specifically targeted at this problem.

Is there anything like this for Windows?
Why are the sidecar files coming out huge for me? I thought it was just an instruction set?

@tnargs57 that is a little surprising. I might reach out to their support team and see if they have an explanation.
Is its print module really as good as lightroom's?
It’s nice to see you too 😘
😍
What do you use for mobile editing on the go?

Wow, that's a lot of news! Thanks for sharing! 👍🏻

How good is its Android version?
I was going to subscribe but I saw you have 2M already so decided your doing alright already lol

You should check out Photomator.
An how this is important for Windows users?
Thank you for the excellent explanation on the sidecar files
Glad it was helpful!
Great app, waiting for a compatibility with plugins

Pixelmator is very very far from "killing" Lightroom. If only because it does not have catalog management, virtual copies, tags, etc.
Monthly subscriptions are TOTALLY OUT OF CONTROL!
Seriously.....
I dumped every software company that went subscription only mode.
All they need to do is add a better file management system in apple photos and I would be willing to swap over. Otherwise, I love Pixelmator and never want to touch photoshop again
Amazing review! What type of software do you use for screen recording and these so, so slick zoom-in/zoom-out transitions?
Super simple and both are free! QuickTime for screen recording and mCamRig by MotionVFX for the zooms.
@@JosephSlinker thank you!

I just did a video applying bulk edits using a Shortcut. I should look at doing a video on replacing Lightroom's batch edit workflow though.
I use lightroom but would never pay the subscription
