So glad you covered this - this is truly my favourite song of all time just due to the instrumentals and the lyrics. To me it's a love letter rather than a raunchy rap song and conveys how much love is behind the lyrics and how much attention to detail the man pays to his girl. It's just so beautifully written in a funky beat - i always imagine sitting down enjoying a cup of coffee in the Spanish streets
On the point of rap vs. classic poetry I would say context of origin and depth of study is important. Classical poetry has the benefit of being studied in high academia and held in high regard among the upper tiers of society. Rap on the other hand was built on a foundation of misfortune. We look into the historical context of when rap became popular and we see that it comes from places where academics have been withheld from people. As higher education has become more and more inaccessible for the lower classes we start to see an interesting division in language. This ties directly into AAVE and other colloquial forms of the English language. Rap is poetry for the modern common man. I feel as though both should be equally celebrated. Both art forms allow the artist an outlet to express themselves through language, the amount of language or the caliber of language does not matter to me. I’m excited to see how rap will grow as an art form and as a means of expression. P.S. A great rap song that demonstrates this idea is Survival Tactics by Joey Bada$$ and Capital Steez. An entrancing track where both artists tell us what it’s like to live in “the ghetto”, venting their frustrations in the fact that it doesn’t have to be the way it is and they are fed up with having to participate in a system they never signed up for. (Could make for a good reaction)
this song is one of the best flowing and just vibes I've listened to. I think rap is modern poetry for the main stream, its an outlet for the artist to pour their heart on the mic.
If you're looking for more meaningful lyrics: - Mac Miller - Wings - Mac Miller - Yeah (bonus) - Mac Miller - Good News - NF - Change - NF - Therapy Session - Nujabes - Feather (ft Cise Star) - Uyama Hiroto - Soul of Freedom (ft Cise Star)
I've listened to so many reaction to Lupe Fiascos music and the majority of them can't really give a good reaction because the depth of his songs are sometimes too much. Lupe is considered the Grand Master of lyrics so much so he's a professor at MIT. I honestly think he's the one artist who would change your mind about rap.
My favorite Nujabes song is Blessing it. You sir, have not heard modern Lupe Fiasco, if you don't think rap can be poetry come back after you listen to WAV files, his sister does spoken word on some of his album and I'd say that's half way between rap and poetry. What about aesop rock? I almost say his music is closer to poetry with a beat than rap. Try his newer stuff, it's easier.
saying that rap isnt poetry is interesting. ill assume youve never heard mf doom or many other classic hip hop artists then. dälek makes poetry 100% for example..
I like nujabes more than majority of mainstream rap artists
Same here
His music spreads love and positivity while these “rappers” spread negativity and unhealthy competition
Nujabes betta than all

Listen to nujabes think different
Yes, I love the fact that it's far less raunchy and disrespectful than most rap songs. It's an ode to the girl's beauty

survival tactics goes crazy
there aint no way higher education is getting less accesible
RAP is an acronym for rhythm and poetry.
So most rappers nowadays do non of that and just want to get shot

distorted prose by dälek is one example of absolute poetry in rap. there is a lot of poetry in other music aswell..
I’m just beginning to come around to this idea.
You should listen to "luv sic part 2" by Nujabes.
better all the luv parts :)

I think the guitar piece was sampled from a song called "Shade under the Mango Tree" by Luiz Bonfá

I’m actually beginning to reconsider. But I need more evidence and examples. I think some rap is indeed poetry but not all.
