such a pure song. a song about true friendship, and how punk rock inspired them. it's such a shame that it all had to be over so soon for the Minutemen. rest in peace, D. Boon.
Such a fascinating ingredient of the stew -- The Minutemen were so different -- so NOT punk and so EXTREMELY punk at the same time. This song is the end of the era -- the end of the innocence -- the end soon of d. Boon and of youth. It was all gone so fast.
Everything about this band is cool and interesting and original, and pure. It's all top notch; the music, how each member is so extremely talented at their instruments yet they mesh and flow together as one entity with no egos or solo wanking disrupting the flow. How the band had a philosophy And a way to live your life surrounding the aura and the message of the band. The Minutemen had their own slang with their own terms for certain events and life moments. And it's kind of like they treated the band as just one part of a larger artistic endeavor or quest. I don't know, I could be way off and just off on a ramble, but I love this band. The Minutemen, really did change my life. RIP D Boon
Me too I'd be dead if not for a few simple chords and a story to tell Me and Mike Watt playing guitar That's what it's all about Shine on you crazy diamonds
I've just finished reading the Minutemen's section in Michael Azerrad's "Our Band Could Be Your Life". Bands like the Minutemen come from a time long before I was born, and sometimes, deep into reading, I forget these aren't fictitious bands of some distant tale lost from our time. And yet here they are, on TH-cam, the very bandmates I read about, for me to watch and listen. This is such a fun performance to watch, because you can feel D. Boon's genuine comfort in the moment. We all watch our friends from bands like this, knowing they dream of where it could take them. The Minutemen weren't living in luxury, but they made it; They had what's important. Not the first to say this: The Minutemen are a philosophy incarnate. I just hope Hurley and Watt can appreciate that still, in spite of how the band had to end. Coming from someone removed from their era entirely, I can say watching this video, and performances like these, make me inexplicably happy, unashamed of it. Sometimes, it happens that a 40 year-old band completely removed from the mainstream gets you to a side of music formerly unknown to you. And hell, I've only just now reached legal adult age; I can start a band. I want to be Minutemen. Me and my bandmates, playing guitar.
I was at this show... I think that they opened for James Blood Ulmer on this show. I was in a band that opened for the Minutemen at the Mab the year before. Man, these guys were the greatest!
I'm the guy that recorded the audio and video of this. A friend helped me author it to digital video and synch the sound in 2012 or so and I shared it freely and someone put it up here.
Remember hearing about D. Boon's accident on the radio. Fortunately, I got to see them a few months earlier. A couple of years later, I saw fIREHOSE in BR opening for Sonic Youth. Kim was standing in the audience right beside me, just zoned in on Watt with this mesmerized smile on her face. After their set, I wandered backstage and found Mike, and I thanked him for continuing to carry the torch. All the sudden he was bawling his eyes out, saying "Why, D? Why'd you have to leave!!" I was too young and dumb to know what to say. I just backed off and gave him some space.
Yo Man U uploaded this 11 years ago and just commented on it- that speaks to its longevity. Tonight I googled the line I heard from waiting for my ruca, and just discovered the minutemen and this song. So inspiring, I wrote a copycat song to it. Stopped trying to rhyme and just began writing from the heart. Truly grateful for your upload and good to see you’re still around enjoying them as you did all those years ago. Peace, stranger
I don't own all of their back catalogue. But 'Double Nickels' is one of my all time Faves. Documents an important Underground social movement in an articulate way.
+MrJmccammon - High Country Cow Punk Yup, this song makes me sad, but I listen to it anyway. Because punk rock changed my life, and the Minutemen were one of the first US punk bands I ever listened to.
@maxfrost68 I'm a 37 year old professor of history. I am a husand. I am a father, I am a teacher. I am a scholar. And everyday day, I search for the bits and pieces of that working thesis. Thnaks, D. Mike, George, and Ed.
i met mike watt at a gig in glasgow a few years ago. i shook his hand and all i could think to say was i fucking love the minutemen, he nodded and smiled
This track is so bittersweet to me. The entire record is wonderful but for some reason this is the only song that makes me sad. Perhaps it’s D Boon referencing Watt by name at a pivotal moment of their friendship and musical growth, along with the melancholy melody. That there is an excellent video of it live, and with Watt and Boon getting close at the ending there hits me in the fucking feels. Love you guys and thanks for the incredible songs
And at the end of the doc they play this song just sitting on an empty stage. Hurley plays bongos. It sounds great. Someone put the clip here. th-cam.com/video/4YXvuP1kLvw/w-d-xo.html
Do you believe that I just knew about The Minutemen from Jackass Movie? I guess I so lucky to find this magnificent band from that movie! I am downloading their discography right now :) Thanks for uploading
"Our band could be your life...".
It still is, man, it still is.
I thin D. Boon said that lyric actually meant that anyone could be the Minutemen, start a band and play music with your best friends.
We were fucking corndogs
My friend said “james loves four bands; and three of them are The Minutemen”…he ain’t wrong…
It still is
This line has been echoing through the years ever since it was spoken by d boon
Song makes me cry. It's a good thing, I lean into it.
me too, always turning towards never away💙
The only thing, ever, I have truly loved
such a pure song. a song about true friendship, and how punk rock inspired them. it's such a shame that it all had to be over so soon for the Minutemen. rest in peace, D. Boon.
26 years later, this song STILL chokes me up. Thank you Boon
I'm still rocking with them Aug 28 2023🤘
2024
Forever.
It has now been officially 40 years. Almost half a century, and D. Boon is still rocking in our hearts. RIP brother.
Such a fascinating ingredient of the stew -- The Minutemen were so different -- so NOT punk and so EXTREMELY punk at the same time. This song is the end of the era -- the end of the innocence -- the end soon of d. Boon and of youth. It was all gone so fast.
Sigh...
they were young but they knew what life was about. imagine singing a song this personal and sincere to punks?
one of the best and one of the most heartfelt tracks
We all know you killed that golf pro. Him, and this tasty bitch he was with!

Punk rock changed my life
Me too
I'd be dead if not for a few simple chords and a story to tell
Me and Mike Watt playing guitar
That's what it's all about
Shine on you crazy diamonds
Me too
You can still see Mike Watt playing live at a tiny little club near you. I did 3 days ago. It cost $15. I love you, Mike Watt.
Man, what a fantastic song...
I love how theres no arguing on minutemen videos. They're the perfect band and you can't hate on their musical ability.
Love you man
The fact that 40 oz to Freedom starts with a Minuteman sample tells you everything you need to know about both bands. Absolute legends.
So true. And Bradley shouts out all three members individually on the last track of that great album. Legit as fuck, no doubt.
Bassline gives me instant chills. So pretty.

Boone, Watt, and Hurley...Unbeatable.
"this is Bob Dylan to me":best line in rock music.
The longevity of this speaks for itself as well as makes me smile.

Yup, this song makes me sad, but I listen to it anyway. Because punk rock changed my life, and the Minutemen were one of the first US punk bands I ever listened to.
