From my first watch, this has remained my favourite movie of all times. The soundtrack in this film isn't like in most movies, Xavier Dolan actually made nearly every song in this film become its own "music video", perfectly blending with whatever scene these songs were in. This specific scene is particularly memorable and timeless for me because of the perfect cinematography complimenting the song, the way the lyrics match the feel and the story, and of course, the most amazing and original aspect ratio use I have ever scene. Most of the movie is claustrophobic, small, "closes in on you". This scene right here has cracked open a window for hope, and just as quickly sealed it shut immediately after. "Wonderwall" was famous way before this film, but ever since it featured here it will always remind me of Steve riding his skateboard and bouncing off the cart shouting for what unfortunately he will never have... LIBERTE.
Totally agree! A mind-blowing thing I noticed on a rewatch some time ago is that the entire soundtrack in the film is the "roadtrip mix CD" we see early on and is discussed in the film about how they went through California before his dad died. If my memory is right, we see Steve take it out of a box and he puts on the Celine Dion song "on ne change pas" and they're all dancing in the living room. During that scene (between the uncomfortable dancing) Die is explaining to Kyla the story of the CD and the road trip. Every single song chosen for the soundtrack in this film is from the mid-late 90s. The soundtrack is, in a very real sense, the character of the father himself. Not to mention the memory/pain/struggle of his absence.
The perfect combination of visuals & song. When the aspect ratio opens up I get chills. A rare 10/10 Canadian Film. Truly Masterful. Xavier Dolan gets to live the rest of his life knowing he has touched the sun & made a masterpiece
I have a question tho, I was watching the film just now for the first time, and I noticed the format didn't change at all, like it does in this video, why is that? is this another version? please if you know, let me know :)
I just watched this film and it felt like a rollercoaster of emotions. Loved it. But I could not found the movie version where Steve open the aspect ratio, if someone would help me I'd appreciate it
Me souviens de la première fois que j'ai vu ce changement de ratio, au cinéma. J'ai tout de suite eu l'impression d'assister à quelque chose de grandiose, d'inédit, de génial, alors que c'est tout simple.
This film is very special and important to me, my mom and I watched it when it came out and identified with it so closely, as we were also trying to navigate our love for each other while trying to make enough money for rent and dealing with my mental health. Fortunately, we're finally getting a break, and I couldn't be happier simply because she deserves it. Now when we watch this it will feel like a memory rather than reality, but in my eyes, this film is perfection and will always hit me deeply on a very intimate level. But even in the worst times, there were moments like this where we could breathe and not worry about everything, even if it was brief. This scene captures that FLAWLESSLY! Thank you Xavier Dolan!
I wish this video carried on a bit longer, as the caller at the door leads to everything changing back the way it was, including the aspect ratio. Such a cool transition.
I really love this movie. The way it was filmed, the acting, everything is just so real. I thought it was going to be a mother son romance when I first heard about it which made me incredibly hesitant to watch it but it’s so much more than that. Their are a lot of things about this movie I’m sure I don’t understand but I do know that it’s incredible a must watch for sure. Maybe it’s because I’m a teenager but coming of age movies like this always have a firm grasp on me.
holy shit... as a french canadian this movie gets to ma heart in some special way because i can just feel the south shore/montreal slang and culture that i have been around for ever... but the actors, music, cinematography.... ahhhhhh i just freakin love this movie. thank you xavier
I watched this movie because a friend of mine loves Dolan's work. I wasn't really convinced at first so I watched it on streaming in the bus, and my friend was damn right. This movie is so powerful and I cried on this fucking bus (tho as a french I couldn't understand what they were saying without subtitles because ✨le Québécois✨
Le changement de focal est tellement incroyable ! Du 4/3 au 16/9!!!! Tt un symbole ! On respire enfin...
Recomendada 🤗
bro i thought i was the only one who started crying when the aspect ratio changed, it was such an odd feeling I don't think ill ever be able to explain what it is
Still remember when I first saw this my mind was completely blown away. The movie & song & scene will always be special to me.
This movie made me cry over an aspect ratio change. What a weird world we live in
I recommend i killed my mother by Xavier dolan
I had to cry too 😭
Me too. This scene works so well, because the rest of the movie is so tragic and dramatically intense.
I wish I could erase my memory of this movie just to see it again.

One of the most iconic moments in cinema - no hyperbole.
This movie is honestly one of the best movies I’ve ever seen and the acting is just phenomenal, everything feels real
Mee too brother
just watched it earlier today, it’s gotta be one of the best movies i’ve ever seen as well
I dont know how, but the first time I saw this and saw his hands pull open the aspect ratio my jaw dropped.
This beautiful sequence from "Mommy" is a small masterpiece of the cinema... Impacts to my sensitive.
xavier dolan i will eternally be grateful to you for this movie

There's way better french Canadian films than this, man. This is mid-tier to be honest.

Discovered this film yesterday evening. Just perfect.
Haven’t seen the film, but this already works as one of the most powerful short films on its own
Aspect ratio as a storytelling device? Absolutely brilliant.
Xaviar Dolan was brilliant in this. I love that laugh he has!
The frame is open when he open his arm like the life is back to him
I have never been so affected by an aspect ratio change
Violent chills watching this scene
Cinema Clap is doing special screening this month to celebrate 10 years after this masterpiece was released. ❤
