The squad is devoid of leadership, but extending him is one extra year of a huge salary that could be spent on a better player, let alone lift a huge burden on the club's books. He doesn't have the quality to be more than a backup, so if you need his leadership skills so much, just offer him a more reasonable contract at the end of the season once his current deal ends (or right now). Its not like any other club will pay anything remotely close to his current salary. Seems like a "the devil you know" kind of deal that avoids a potential future problem by not fixing a current one.

This gives you the flexibility to replace him over two summer Transfer windows as opposed to one, allowing what ever money is available in the summer to strengthen other areas. I think this is just pragmatic rather than a desire to actually keep him.

I admire Maguire's resolve in coming back from where he was before, but giving him a 190k extension is emblematic of everything wrong with Utd. These crazy wages started with Sanchez, who was paid to play in Italy, then De Gea, and then so on. Meanwhile, Utd go deeper into debt while sliding further down the table. They could have given Amorim the job in June and given him Ten Hag's substantial transfer kitty and he might have made a great start. Instead, he's lumbered with 200m of new players who already look useless and he may well damage his own career by trying to muddle through to the summer, shoving square pegs into a round hole.

I admire Maguire's resolve in coming back from where he was before, but giving him a 190k extension is emblematic of everything wrong with Utd. These crazy wages started with Sanchez, who was paid to play in Italy, then De Gea, and then so on. Meanwhile, Utd go deeper into debt while sliding further down the table.
They could have given Amorim the job in June and given him Ten Hag's substantial transfer kitty and he might have made a great start. Instead, he's lumbered with 200m of new players who already look useless and he may well damage his own career by trying to muddle through to the summer, shoving square pegs into a round hole.

To be honest, he’s probably the only player in that entire squad that has shown the mental fortitude to come back from the last couple of years and not be completely destroyed by it. Yes, his talent may not be at the level united need, but his mentality does seem to be. He will probably be a fine back up centreback if the rest of the team was good,.

I was on Maguire get out bandwagon when he was captain, but now? He is our most solid defender. Much better than De Ligt and Martinez when it comes to positioning and awareness.

Remember when 7hag joined United, one of his first press conferences he was basically asked "are you finally going to be the manager that drops that lemon Maguire?"... and his answer, bafflingly was "no he's my captain I trust him". He then proceeded to start him for the first two games of the season and was absolutely dogshit and largely at fault for defeats to Brighton and Brentford. 7hag hastily dropped him but the damage was done - he'd backed a terrible player and it shows us all what a fraud 7hag was.
Fast forward to season 24/25 and we now have Amorim making similar statements. Another fucking bluffer who couldn't set up a team to save his life. I really don't know where United are finding these clueless managers.
