They have made several changes to the newer Ready Brake Brute Elite II since this video was made. There is no longer a ring to run your safety chains and wires through. You have to insert a pin to hook the unit up for storage, no longer a hook. There is now a turn buckle to make fine adjustments on the brake sling cable. Most of the rest of the set up is the same as the video.
As was mentioned in the video, the Tow Bar we use is the same one we purchased back in 2006. The ReadyBrute is a great tow bar and if we ever need a new one it will definitely be another ReadyBrute. The new upgrades sound great.
I am currently in search for a tow bar as I have ordered yet another RV. I said I would never do that again, this going on the 5th time. Anyway, I never had the supplemental braking set up and I am wanting something simpler. This tow bar and break away seem to fit the bill. Thanks for your videos because they answered all my questions. This is the system for me!

About to pull the trigger on a "conversion" of my own, but watching (not the install of any of the components) rather hooking the Jeep up... THAT looks like way more of a pain than I had anticipated. I'm guessing you might not drop the jeep for a one evening run into town? I'd like to watch how long this takes real time, in the rain, when you're supposed to have been off the campsite by 11:00 and it's almost noon. Also how much of that gear do you bring inside or stow if you camp somewhere for a few days?
Yes we have dropped the Jeep if we wanted to go some place even if it was an overnight stay. Now that we are full time, the tow bar stay hooked to the RV at all times. When we are at a campground, we put a cover over it to keep the dirt and rain off it. The only thing we stow is the 7 way to 6 way electrical cord. Everything else is either attached on the Jeep or the coach. With my wife and I working together, 5-10 minutes tops to hook up the Jeep to the RV and we are rolling. Unhooking is less than that. Once you do it a few times, it's a piece of cake. The alternate to towing four down is to use a dolly or a trailer. That looks like more of a pain to us, but to be fair we have never done it that way because we have been pulling a toad behind our RV's since 2006. As far as rainy days, it's part of the camping experience and adds no time to our hookup or unhooking. We also always set an alarm for the day we are leaving a campground. LOL
@@WeRmudfun Cool, a reply. Yeah flat towing seems like the only way to maintain any sanity. Imagine having to stow a dolly or a trailer every time on top of everything else! I witnessed a poor guy's wife back their sport ute off the side of trailer in an RV park last fall. The entire disaster damaged everything from their relationship, to the car, the trailer and the trip. It made me delay the decision to start towing another 6 months, but after 4 weeks of rental cars this spring, dozens of Uber rides and lots of walking, I pulled the trigger on used a starter Jeep today. She's going to need a full outfit for towing. Thinking the Roadmaster and the iRV3 brake system, but may warm up to a mechanical cable system like you demonstrated. Hey thanks for making all the content (I've been binge watching your channel today) I know how much it takes to put out good content and yours is top notch. Maybe we'll see you "out there" sometime and I can somehow return the favor.

A question, does the Ready Brake Cable have enough slack in it to be disconnected at full tow bar extension? or, should the towed vehicle brake be depressed to give it enough slack for disconnecting at the end of the tow? Again, thanks for the videos, they were very helpful.

Very nice series. Wow so much goes into towing a Jeep. Like the other commenter I had found your site because of your Jeep videos so this was interesting. When I was driving through the Atlanta area I got stuck behind a huge slow RV. I was so tried I started saying outloud, "Hey man we're going the same direction. Just hook me up so I can let go the pedal and you won't know I'm there." Hehe.
Thanks, it's a lot, but once it's done, it's easy. The Wranglers pull like a dream, you don't even know they are back there some times. That's when the rear camera comes in handy just to check on it. You'll more than likely see it soon. :)

Yes. The transfer case is in neutral, so the transmission is put is park. Every vehicle can be different, so read your owners manual for your own vehicle. 😃

All we did was run a drill through them to clean up some extra paint build up on them, then the pin slid through easily. No mods needed when we did it.
I have a question. Your steering wheel in the Jeep looks like it moves fairly easy when hooked to the RV. I know that when I put my key to off in my Jeep, the steering wheel gets really hard to turn, like the power steering stops working. Would that be ab issue when turning? Thanks in advance.
If we are not hooked up to the RV, our steering is hard too. Power steering does not work unless the vehicle is running. When it is attached the the RV it should turn with the RV provided your steering wheel does not lock with the key removed or there is some other problem. 😀
I have a 2017 wrangler that I am setting up for tow. I was not sure how to attach my jeep to my tow bar. I had not heard of the Currie mount plate until I saw your video. I like my stock bumper and had the same issue you did. I am looking forward to getting my Currie mount plate and installing it. It looks really clean and professional. Thanks for sharing
I am going with the same set up on ours ,We have a Tiffin motorhome and will be pulling a 2017 JKU behind, does this setup make a lot of noise and or klunking sounds when you slow the Motorhome ?

Thanks. It depends on the year of your Wrangler. On our 2017, the steering column doesn't lock, so there is no need leave the key in the ignition or disconnect the battery cable. You can check your owners manual to see if your year requires it. 😃
Bought a new Ready Brake and the brake light came with it. I have a 1989 Born Free so the hookup will be different, but thought your viewers would like to know. After many, many searches on the best system, the Currie base plate and the Ready Brake system is the best way to go.
Over the past year I have been researching brake systems for our RV to set up a flat tow of a 2016 Wrangler JKU. I decided on the Ready Brake system by NSA. Found your videos on TH-cam. Very informative and helpful. NSA should build a link to your page as your are better and more complete than theirs.
I was always told to hook up the toad first to the tow vehicle, then put the toad in tow mode, because you don’t want a runaway vehicle, what is your take on this? Love your videos
We have been hooking up the toad to the motor home first , then putting it in tow mode since day one. Once the toad is in toad mode it is a runaway waiting to happen. It is also easier to drive the toad up to the tow bar on the motor home, then back the motor home up to the toad. 😄👍 PS we have moved all out new RV video to our other channel. th-cam.com/users/GetGonewithUS

I noticed you zip-tied the break-away cable to the tow bar. This would not be convenient if the toad needs to be disconnected frequently. Do you have any suggestions for how the break-away cable could be routed so that it's easier and faster to connect/disconnect?
When you disconnect, you disconnect the breakaway cable at the Toad, the cable then stays with the tow bar, so there’s no need to break and redo the zip ties every time. If the Toad ever came loose, the breakaway cable is just going to snap the zip ties and once the slack is diminished it will engage the brakes, locking them.
I bought a motorhome last year and a Wrangler Unlimited a couple weeks ago. Your videos have been quite helpful in showing me some important features and possible choices. If I lived anywhere near New England I'd try to bribe you into helping me install a few things. 😄
Thanks! :) I would imagine you would need to run a jumper wire with a diode from the toad harness to the power wire going to the 3rd brake light. Not really sure though.
This is interesting due to the fact that many areas require vehicles to have a 3rd brake light...but in this case the Toad is a “trailer” so I can’t imagine the 3rd light being required by any law.
I was wondering which electrical harness you use to connect your Jeep to the RV. I use the Mopar Harness, but I’m not crazy about the connectors. We really enjoy your videos and we’ve learned a lot. Thanks.
Thanks for your comment. When we were researching, we looked at the Mopar harness, but decided against it. We went with this one of our 2017 Sahara... We do, because that was the best location for us. I have considered drilling a hole through the frame and mounting it closer to the end so we don't have to go under the RV. Truthfully with the height of our RV, it's not a big deal, that why I haven't done it yet. :) Remember though, it has to be mount to the frame, not the hitch receivers.
We don't have that many miles pulling this Wrangler yet, but do not anticipate any problems. We pulled our old Wrangler behind our Class C for years and never had a problem.
Depending on the year of the JK the key doesn't even need to be in the Wrangler. Our 2017 does not have a steering wheel lock, I'm not sure which years do. You would need to check your Owners Manual or talk to your dealer.
Thank you so much for these videos on how to do these installs. I was trying to find a place to mount the readystop unit on my JK and I decided to see if anyone had done it on youtube. Yours was the first one that popped up. You mounted it in the place I was leaning towards so your video confirmed that for me. I am also mounting the ready brake unit, but the nylon bushing for the front of the jeep was missing, so I had to contact NSA to get that. I ran the conduit for that today while I was running the readystop wiring. The only thing I noticed that you did different than the instructions was the way you hooked up the plates to the brake pedal. The instructions say to use the bolt holes closest together that will still allow you to hook up to the pedal. You used the outside 4 holes. I was able to use the 2 sets of holes that are closest together. Have you had any problems with the plates shifting on the pedal? It also looks like you went with the same baseplate I put on the front of mine. I opted to use a bracket like you suggested and ran the cable through the curved shaped design in the middle of the baseplate. By the way, nice flag hanging in your garage. Semper Fi brother!
Just have to say, that watching your series was very helpful to my wife and I in installing the brake and breakaway system, even though I klutzed up an item along the way (was able to do it the right way though ): ) Just a question on this video - you have the brake cable tension set so it has about a 2" movement amount, up and down - but it still looks fairly taut. Is there a problem if you make hard right and left turns in the cable being pulled accidentally via the turn radius and applying the brakes? Overall, a great series for a person wanting to do their own work using the Ready Brute system. Thanks to you and your wife for all the time and effort you put in this.
Thank you for your comment we are glad you found the series helpful. The directions call for 2-3" of play, we fall in between that with ours. We have not experience a problem with the brake cable during turns. Note though, that we have noticed that the cable does stretch a bit after the first ride out and needed readjusting. We also use a bungee cord on the brake pedal and attach it under the drivers seat as added precaution. If you recall, we installed an extra wire when we installed the brake relay kit, so that we can eventually have a LED light in the RV telling us when the brakes are activated. The new Readybrute Elite tow bars come with that feature, but only tell you when the Readybrake is activated. I want to know when the actual Wrangler brakes are activated, I'm funny like that. LOL

You are welcome. Before we installed the toad brake monitoring light, I used to turn on the rear camera just to make sure the Jeep was still there. Now I occasionally look at the light while braking in the RV to know it’s still back there. That’s how easily the Jeep pulls, can’t even tell it’s back there.

Chuck, as tight as your Ready Stop lead is, how does it not activate when you do a tight right turn? (ok, as tight right as a motorhome can make)
It has never been an issue. It is adjusted to manufacturers recommendations. Beside I hardly ever make a tight right or left turn in a motorhome. LOL

We have been hooking up the toad to the motor home first , then putting it in tow mode since day one. Once the toad is in toad mode it is a runaway waiting to happen. It is also easier to drive the toad up to the tow bar on the motor home, then back the motor home up to the toad. 😄👍 PS we have moved all out new RV video to our other channel. th-cam.com/users/GetGonewithUS

I am about to do the same base plate and ready brute tow bar. One question - what about the clevis? Did ready brake need to custom fit?
Yes the clevis you get needs to fit the ReadyBrute tow bar. I have links to everything we used in the discussion box below the video.
I noticed you zip-tied the break-away cable to the tow bar. This would not be convenient if the toad needs to be disconnected frequently. Do you have any suggestions for how the break-away cable could be routed so that it's easier and faster to connect/disconnect?
When you disconnect, you disconnect the breakaway cable at the Toad, the cable then stays with the tow bar, so there’s no need to break and redo the zip ties every time. If the Toad ever came loose, the breakaway cable is just going to snap the zip ties and once the slack is diminished it will engage the brakes, locking them.
I bought a motorhome last year and a Wrangler Unlimited a couple weeks ago. Your videos have been quite helpful in showing me some important features and possible choices. If I lived anywhere near New England I'd try to bribe you into helping me install a few things. 😄

Thanks! :) I would imagine you would need to run a jumper wire with a diode from the toad harness to the power wire going to the 3rd brake light. Not really sure though.
This is interesting due to the fact that many areas require vehicles to have a 3rd brake light...but in this case the Toad is a “trailer” so I can’t imagine the 3rd light being required by any law.

Nope we did not. You need to check your owners manual for your Wrangler to be sure.
Do you have to crawl under the RV to hook up the break away cable each time you hook up?
We do, because that was the best location for us. I have considered drilling a hole through the frame and mounting it closer to the end so we don't have to go under the RV. Truthfully with the height of our RV, it's not a big deal, that why I haven't done it yet. :) Remember though, it has to be mount to the frame, not the hitch receivers.
We are also considering a soft top wrangler for our toad. Do you have any issues with the wind from the rv buffeting and damaging the top?
We don't have that many miles pulling this Wrangler yet, but do not anticipate any problems. We pulled our old Wrangler behind our Class C for years and never had a problem.
Is there a certain position you have to leave the ignition switch in the jeep in order for it to steer?
Depending on the year of the JK the key doesn't even need to be in the Wrangler. Our 2017 does not have a steering wheel lock, I'm not sure which years do. You would need to check your Owners Manual or talk to your dealer.

Thank you so much for these videos on how to do these installs. I was trying to find a place to mount the readystop unit on my JK and I decided to see if anyone had done it on youtube. Yours was the first one that popped up. You mounted it in the place I was leaning towards so your video confirmed that for me. I am also mounting the ready brake unit, but the nylon bushing for the front of the jeep was missing, so I had to contact NSA to get that. I ran the conduit for that today while I was running the readystop wiring. The only thing I noticed that you did different than the instructions was the way you hooked up the plates to the brake pedal. The instructions say to use the bolt holes closest together that will still allow you to hook up to the pedal. You used the outside 4 holes. I was able to use the 2 sets of holes that are closest together. Have you had any problems with the plates shifting on the pedal? It also looks like you went with the same baseplate I put on the front of mine. I opted to use a bracket like you suggested and ran the cable through the curved shaped design in the middle of the baseplate.

Just have to say, that watching your series was very helpful to my wife and I in installing the brake and breakaway system, even though I klutzed up an item along the way (was able to do it the right way though ): ) Just a question on this video - you have the brake cable tension set so it has about a 2" movement amount, up and down - but it still looks fairly taut. Is there a problem if you make hard right and left turns in the cable being pulled accidentally via the turn radius and applying the brakes? Overall, a great series for a person wanting to do their own work using the Ready Brute system. Thanks to you and your wife for all the time and effort you put in this.
Thank you for your comment we are glad you found the series helpful. The directions call for 2-3" of play, we fall in between that with ours. We have not experience a problem with the brake cable during turns. Note though, that we have noticed that the cable does stretch a bit after the first ride out and needed readjusting. We also use a bungee cord on the brake pedal and attach it under the drivers seat as added precaution. If you recall, we installed an extra wire when we installed the brake relay kit, so that we can eventually have a LED light in the RV telling us when the brakes are activated. The new Readybrute Elite tow bars come with that feature, but only tell you when the Readybrake is activated. I want to know when the actual Wrangler brakes are activated, I'm funny like that. LOL

You are welcome. Before we installed the toad brake monitoring light, I used to turn on the rear camera just to make sure the Jeep was still there. Now I occasionally look at the light while braking in the RV to know it’s still back there. That’s how easily the Jeep pulls, can’t even tell it’s back there.
