@@RuthlessMetalYT 80's Pantera just sound like a wannabe glam/Metal. From comboys from hell to upward this is where they find their own true musical identity. Groove metal is such a elusive term. 90' Pantera is way heavier than so called trash bands. Far beyond driven and the great southern trendkill is Pantera at their most violent, expérimental and punishing when many bands trying to compromise their sound for MTV and mainstream airplay ex Metallica, Megadeth, Exodus.. etr... Dimebag Direll guitar playing was way above others players when its come for rythme and groove.Meshuggah is a big gamechanger that separate old school from new school metal. You're ranking show that you're more of a 80's old school metal guys than anything else. Don't get me wrong here! I I still hold 80' metal in very high regard because as a middle age men i've seen it all. Metal as to evolve and not be stuck in the 84-92 period.

Vulgar is their best album. No good, fucking hostile, hollow, piss, by demons be driven, walk, mouth for war, regular people, this love. Strong album. Far beyond driven though heavier is not as cohesive as an album neither is cowboys or trendkill. Just my 2 cents

I find this take from a non American (zero disrespect intended) absolutely fascinating! Because as an American I think the glamtera stuff is largely hot garbage and the stuff after FBD a diary of a band disintegrating. However, cowboys through far beyond is S-tier metal canon. So it’s very interesting and frankly wonderful to hear a different tale than the one I’m so accustomed to.

I have "Power Metal" at #1, Overall. It had all of the advantages offered by the members involved, coupled with it being released in a time in which Metal was being embraced in all it's glory. Dimebag's (Or should I say "Diamond's") solo on "We'll Meet Again" is awe-inspiring along with some full blown Thrash moments in a spot or two, the album lives up to the last decade in which we had unfiltered awesomeness free of the subversive decay that was just around the corner when Grunge and other forms of media(TV, Movies, etc.) all embraced the "hungover" vibe of the 90s.

Ouch I was pretty shocked on your take of the last half of Pantera. As that is when I got into them was Cowboys From Hell and till the end. Here are my rankings and favorite track from each album if I have one.
    1. Cowboys From Hell: Medicine Man & it is my favorite track from Pantera overall. Phil's vocals were absolutely incredible in this track and it is super criminally underrated.
    2. Vulgar Display Of Power: A New Level. This is the album that pretty much got me into Pantera. I bought the CD at a local owned record store after I got out of high school in late '92. And it literally blew my mind!
    3. The Great Southern Trendkill: Floods. And hands down is one of Dimebag's best guitar pieces I feel.
    4. Far Beyond Driven: I honestly do not have a favorite track from this particular album. But it is fun to listen to.
    5. Power Metal: No favorite track, but this album is fantastic and really showed the awesome vocal range Phil once had.
    6. I Am The Night: I don't have a favorite track, but this album is pretty good and has some great tracks to jam to.
After that point I can't really rank the rest as I didn't listen to them as much. Maybe my ranking will change if I listen to them some more over time. Also I have seen Pantera twice in my lifetime and they were great! Once in '98 with Slayer, Soulfly, Megadeth and Black Sabbath and again at Ozzfest in '00.

I'm surprised Jim did this. I know his disdain for this band. I think only because he had to put it to rest. I'm older, but i'll say, I think Pantera was a release for young white bangers who didn't want hip hop forced on them. What else commercially were they gonna find...METALLICA? The bangers who know the underground I'm not counting. Pantera provided something against grunge and hip hop.

Metal Magic... and then the rest which I dislike, ok than on 5. Cowobys and then the garbage that came after it. When Pantera opened for PRIEST and Annihilator on the 1990 "Painkiller" tour, I brought my four LPs for the guys to sign, I remember as yesterday Dimebag was VERY (!) surprised a guy in Germany came with those 4 albums and he was very friendly and talkative. I think he even asked me where I got them from, I think I got two of them in a record shop in Basel, Switzerland. Phil wasn't friendly at all... (There was nothing to sign from him! I didn't had that "new" album...) Still he didn't bitch, he just saw me coming from a Judas Priest interview and they were the "baby" band on that tour.

I do find your ranking, very interesting, and different from any other fan, and I like to see it like that. If there's one thing I'd recommend to a Pantera first timer is to listen to all the albums in order, and wait maybe 6 months to relisten to all of them in order. Again, I'd rather not start a fight, because this is only MY opinion. I do like their 80s albums, except Metal Magic, because that one in particular, wasn't one that I enjoyed all together. Its nice to see a new take on Pantera. They've always been sorta controversial in one way or another. I'll defend Cowboys and Vulgar as I think they are really good (if a little similar to each other) and nobody can argue they arent good songs to work out too. But being a big fan of 80's thrash and a little bit of 90's stuff like early Pantera or Iced Earth (If you like them I'd love to see you rank Iced Earth) I didn't really care for what they and the metal genre in general turned into, even as a young 20 year old I can tell a lot of what made metal special early on has kinda vanished and metal has kinda become a parody of itself, and I think Pantera had a large hand in that.

some trivia: Cowboys from Hell was initially recorded in 1989 before being redone in 1990, the early versions were added on deluxe and other editions of the album under the name Cowboys from Hell: The Demos and Phil's vocals sound more clean on it and the one song that got cut, The Will to Survive, is a pretty cool 80s Pantera track.
anyway I like both eras of Pantera though I felt this 'angry Groove Metal' style was getting somewhat tiring by the last few albums.

Interesting list. Good job! I was surprised you even ranked Pantera, since I knew before you weren't a fan. But I'm glad you did, since I watched this video as soon as I saw it.
As a Pantera fan, here is my list:
    1. Cowboys From Hell (one of the first metal albums I listened to, so I have lots of nostalgia. But this album is the most consistent from them (imo). Great songs as well).
    2. Far Beyond Driven ( I love this album, even though it's agreeably repetitive. There's some of their best riffs (imo) and I dont have a problem with Phil's vocals in this era).
    3. Power Metal ( Underrated, and should be reissued. More of a classic metal sound, but I love classic heavy/speed/thrash metal, so it's good. Some good songs on here and shouldn't be skipped)
    4. Projects in the Jungle (This is where the Pantera albums for me start to dip in quality. This album is too glammy and unoriginal for my taste (I'm not going to argue Pantera is the most original band, but their later albums compared to this is like a different band). Production is also trash. But it's a decent record.
    5. The Great Southern Trendkill (Some people say this album is one of their best, and I don't see why. Drag the Waters is my favorite Pantera song, but the rest are just average. Also, Phil recorded his vocals in a different studio from the band, so that shoes tension starting to be built and ruining song quality of their later albums.)
    6. Reinventing the Steel (The Great Southern Trendkill... except even more bland.)
    7. I Am the Night ( Not as bad as Metal Magic, but still bad. Don't get personally why this is considered the best album of the glamtera album (by some), cause it fails at going a little "heavier" than Projects. Haven't listened to it in a while, but from what I remember i shouldn't.
    8. Metal Magic: Bland, cheesy, ripoff glam garbage.
    Thanks for reading

Okay, I'm gonna give this a fair try. I'll add my list first, and then I'll explain why I rank the records in that order.
    1. The Great Southern Trendkill
    2. Vulgar Display Of Power
    3. Cowboys From Hell
    4. Far Beyond Driven
    5. Reinventing The Steel
No, I'm not gonna list the 1980 albums, simply because Pantera became Pantera in 1990 for me.
I was there from the very start. I became a fan in like 1991 or 1992, I think. I was born in 1981. So when Cowboys came out, I was just this little ugly dude in school with teeth sticking out everywhere, wearing this huge Pantera t-shirt, with other dudes in school being all like "did you buy a new dress?". I won an air guitar competition during that time, rolling around on the floor playing along to the title track Cowboys From Hell.
Then came Vulgar Display Of Power, and everything just changed. They took the best ingredients from Cowboys, and just amplified them. It all just got so much heavier and cooler. Phil fucking shaved all his hair off for that record, because it was a whole new attitude, and damn - it grooved. That first opening track Mouth For War is one I still rock out to, to this very day.
Nu metal came in, Korn took over, and I honestly kinda "missed" Far Beyond Driven. It's still kinda lost on me. I don't think that record is as good as the ones that came before it, or the one that came after it. I don't even include Reinventing The Steel here, because I honestly never really gave it a fair shot. I had lost interest in Pantera by that point.
But man. In 1996, when they released The Great Southern Trendkill, I was just floored and nailed to my bed. I don't even remember where I was when I put that record on. Probably at home in my bed, with headphones on and volume turned up to max. That entire record just flew by, and I was all like "what the fuck was that?". I didn't understand what I had just listened to, so I just kept repeating that record over and over and over.
That record is pure magic. I had goose bumps all over my body. That's the Pantera record I always go back and listen to, because it's just so dark, brutal and honest. And that evil rattle snake on the album cover. You can't beat that album.

The Far beyond Driven comments are punch in the mouthable my friend. We can all have our tastes but being a hater stinks. Great album great band in a time when college drip like REM and the Singles movie were "cutting edge". Dime and Phil are Gods

    My rankings:
1: Vulgar Display of Power. This is their album where everything lands. Mouth For War, Walk, Rise, Regular People, This Love, Fucking Hostile... really, I should list every song, but I won't. Also, four of the tracks here were the inspirations for some of the classic DOOM songs, so this album is pretty special to me.
2: Cowboys From Hell. Almost as good as VDOP. Lots of bangers here. The title track, Domination, Art of Shredding, and Shattered are just a few. The only reason it's at number 2 is because VDOP is just that good.
3: Far Beyond Driven. It's a solid album. Not a perfect one though. Strength Beyond Strength is one of my favorite Pantera songs, and it's also home to songs like 25 Years, Becoming, I'm Broken, and 5 Minutes Alone. There's some bad parts though. Hard Lines, Sunken Cheeks is kinda dull, and I don't care much for the Planet Caravan cover either. Throes of Rejection lyrically sounds like it was written by a simp who got cheated on by his girlfriend because of an inferior dick size. Yeah, sounds extreme, but the lyrics are that bad. Also, Good Friends and a Bottle of Pills is easily their worst 90s song. Fun album despite its shortcomings.
3 (Tied With FBD): Reinventing The Steel. It seems like I admire this album more than other people do. Goddamn Electric, Death Rattle, Yesterday Don't Mean Shit, We'll Grind That Axe For A Long Time, etc. Very solid album. The high points aren't THAT high, but the lows aren't quite low either. This one is tied with FBD because it really depends on preference; would you rather have a consistently good album, or an album with high high points, but low low points?
4: The Great Southern Trendkill. This is St. Anger if it was a better album. The band was going through a lot of rough stuff at the time, and it shows, especially with songs like Suicide Note Part 2. The title track, War Nerve, Drag The Waters, and Floods are pretty solid. It's a bit of an acquired taste at times, I will say, but definitely not bad.
5: Every 80s album. Not a fan of this era. Power Metal is the one decent album of the era, as it felt like they were starting to find their sound. Before that, however, it wasn't even remotely good. They were basically one of those rock bands that mostly sang about sex and stuff. Absolutely cringe lyrics. The instrumentals are usually nothing special either. Also, the official Pantera account doesn't even have a playlist for these albums, and the genius pages have grammar errors. Even Metallica's Lulu didn't have those shortcomings, so make of that what you will.

As an American who lived for a time in Germany, I found it fascinating that the European opinion of Pantera was quite different than the American one. With that knowledge, I wasn't surprised at all with your rankings.

    • @RuthlessMetalYT

I think my opinion of Pantera is quite different from most Europeans. I think most metal fans are into Pantera, simply because they are big and popular, but I just can't stand that modern metal sound that they and a few others invented around 1990.

Honestly, Cowboys is the only Anselmo era one I like. Even on Vulgar I only like Walk ironically. With Far Beyond Driven onward I just can't make myself care.
