    More than 300 million tonnes of plastic is produced every year, yet just a fraction of this is recycled. Most of the waste usually ends up in landfills, waterways and oceans.
    If we use just two percent of the waste plastic in the world, we can change the lives of millions of people. We can end the housing shortage in Latin America in just 10 years.
    Oscar Mendez, architect and founder of Conceptos Plasticos
    In Colombia's capital, Bogota, it is estimated that 650 tonnes of plastic is thrown away every single day.
    Globally, the amount of plastic waste affecting the productivity of natural systems - such as the ocean - and creating a negative effect in urban infrastructures, including managing greenhouse emissions, is conservatively estimated to cost $40bn annually.
    However, one enterprise in Colombia has found a novel way of using the normally discarded waste.
    Conceptos Plasticos, founded by architect Oscar Mendez, collects recyclable plastic material, melts it down and moulds it into bricks which are then used to build houses for the local community.
    The hope is that using plastic to build homes will be the answer to both recycling and housing shortages.
    "If we use just two percent of the waste plastic in the world we can change the lives of millions of people. We can end the housing shortage in Latin America in just 10 years," says Mendez.
    The company has already helped to house 42 families displaced by conflict in the town of Guapi, Colombia, recycling 120 tonnes of plastic in the process.
    Juliana Schatz heads to Bogota to see how Conceptos Plasticos builds these homes out of discarded waste.

    • @treelife365
      @treelife365 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @Lucien Studio - You've got some good points... it's hard for the human race to plan for decades into the future due to biological constraints. Some of us are trying, though!
      Another thing that constrains human thinking is the economic model. Humans normally only look to do something if it's "profitable". So... creating building blocks out of plastic waste would not only be helpful (only somewhat, according to you), but also could be profitable. Pumping it back into the ground would not be profitable at all!
      The best idea for Earthlings would be to produce toxic waste off-planet, where it won't harm any form of life, but we're not capable of that at the moment!
      Are you willing to share with us some further enlightenment?

    • @NotSoCrazyNinja
      @NotSoCrazyNinja 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Likely no worse than modern homes. The problem with bringing this to the USA is all the rules and laws surrounding building anything. After all the bullcrap you would have to go through to get a "plastic house" approved, it would cost as much or more than a "traditional house" so nobody would want it. If it could be brought to the USA and end up making a new house cost about $50K or less, it would be a good investment for sure. The cost of housing is just too much and will only continue to rise. The average person in the USA just can't afford to buy a house anymore.

    • @timothycormier3494
      @timothycormier3494 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mark Reaves good point. I build houses for a living and lumber cost have been rising for quite some time now. Back in I think “08” when fuel prices shot up to about $4.00 a gallon. Lumber and construction material prices shot right up with the fuel. After the prices came back down. The building materials stayed high along with new construction rules and regulations that just added cost to the end product

    • @NotSoCrazyNinja
      @NotSoCrazyNinja 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@timothycormier3494 I visualize a home being able to be constructed from panels made from recycled and cheap to purchase materials that can be put together in a way to reduce labor. It would help if these panels are also light in weight. I've seen some panels made from foam sandwiched between wood. Maybe if the wood could be replaced with recycled plastic and the system refined a bit to make assembly and transport easier and cheaper, a house could potentially go together quickly and with minimal labor, reducing the total cost. In this case, the foam is expensive, if ways could be found to make insulated building panels using cheaper materials that still perform well enough, it might be a winner.
      Another option, I see no reason why manufactured home builders couldn't work with traditional home builders to create a new type of home that could cost a lot less to end buyer. Using automation and labor-saving techniques, build panels in a factory, load them on a regular semi truck, take them to the home site, have a small team of maybe five people assemble the home from the panels in a few days. There you go, a home shell. If the panels could be made so that the exterior and interior already has a finished surface, that could save a lot of time and money too. The same panel concept could be brought into the roofing to cut down on cost there. You might be able to take a bare piece of prepared land and have a finished house in a month with the right automation setup, and the end result might just be less than $50K new. Real estate agents may hate it, as will a lot of construction crews and maybe even some snobby HOAs, but, I do believe it is possible to have a cheap but decent home built. I'm just not in a position to make or try to make it happen.

    • @timothycormier3494
      @timothycormier3494 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mark Reaves again, another good point. I think/ hope that in the future we’ll see more and more uses of recycled materials. Necessity is the mother of invention and if ya stroll around TH-cam for a while. There’s a lot of people trying to come up with uses for the abundance of waste that we have. But to your point of home construction with recycled materials. It’s a great idea. I feel like we’re not to far away from really utilizing the resource of waste. I know that it probably sounds like an oxymoron. But waste is a resource that we are in abundance of. I still have faith in humanity despite all the anger in our society today. We will find a way! We always do. God bless

    A big concern here is FIRE and the off gassing burning plastic produces.
    An out of control fire could produce deadly gasses that could wipe out an entire neighborhood .
    The manufacturing process mentioned keeping the plastic within 240-250 F (see 4:44) to avoid releasing toxic gasses.

    There are plastic recycling programs all over the world and we were originally all told that these were the types of projects that these valuable resources could be used for. Unfortunately, there is far more recycled plastics than the traditional plastics manufacturers can make use of. Cities all over North America, Britain, Scandinavia, Europe and Asia have enormous stockpiles of plastics that have nowhere to market them to and they will be eventually transferred to landfills. There is enormous potential for building materials and so many other products. Potential businesses and employment that are being squandered.

      Yes, I made the same comment! WooT getting the word out!

    • @Barskor1
      @Barskor1 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Mr Brightside Well Mr. Brightside we are NOT talking about using this brick system for roads or airport runways but replacing tar with plastic it would be extremely similar to the way such things are normally made you would mix sand and gravel with shredded plastic heat it in a big hopper dump it out on a prepared bed of compacted graded earth roll it flat and boom road etcetera.

    • @Barskor1
      @Barskor1 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Mr Brightside Oh boy so how much of the Earth is made of Rock? Yeah so...semantics.
      It takes the same amount of energy to heat tar as it does to heat the plastic to a melting point and yes when making roads you do need to heat the tar.
      THINK about how potholes are formed water accumulates under your road freezes expands and then when it melts collapsing destroying the road and making a hazard that also damages your vehicle. Also sinkholes so your touted advantage for tar really is not an advantage unless you are in the roads repair business.

    • @Barskor1
      @Barskor1 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Mr Brightside Ok so it takes twice the heat and lasts ten years or you can go for half the heat and next year start filling the potholes and so on...
      As to plastic being slippery what do you think the sand and gravel are for? Ah yes, filler and friction.
      You may not be in the road building or repair business but the politicians' cronies sure are and they donate more to "campaign funds" than you do.

    • @Barskor1
      @Barskor1 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Mr Brightside Energy consumption: if have you rebuild the road only half as often the energy consumption is equal etcetera the longer it is till you have to rebuild the lower actual energy costs are.
      Plastic roads last longer how do I know because Germany and India did studies to find out.
      The rapidity of pothole formation depends on your local environment.
      To the plastic surfaces getting worn down assertion the plastic is just binder for rocks are tires going to destroy rocks? wear them away? No, as the plastic that is between the rock is sheltered from that wear like mortar in brick walls.
      Now you probably are going to mention UV degradation and it is countered by adding carbon powder to the mix.
      What do you think tar is? Fairly toxic hydrocarbons that get into the environment from the roads so at worse plastic is an equally problematic material to use.
      And that ladies and gentlemen is the use of debate fallacies Ridiculum and Strawman argumentation by Mr. Brightside at the end.
