I was in Vienna in June. I went to Germany and Austria with some family for 10 days. I had always wanted to go to Europe since I was young, and it was a dream come true! Vienna was just amazing! We stayed overnight, and saw some incredible sights. One of my favorite sights was a statue of Johann Strauss. I listen to classical music, so this was right up my alley.
I've watched all of Rick's European videos many times over and I never get tired of watching them. : )
Same here. I was in Europe back in June with some family. We went for 10 days. We were in Germany and Austria. It had been a dream of mine to go to Europe since I was young, and it was a dream come true for me. We stayed overnight in Vienna, and it was just an amazing place. We saw some great places. One of my favorite places we saw was Hotel Sacher. This was the birthplace of the Sachertorte. We all had a piece of Sachertorte, and it was absolutely delicious! We saw a statue of Johann Strauss in Stadtpark. This was right up my alley since I listen to classical music. Such an amazing trip
I've just returned from Vienna, I fell in love with this city so much. The architecture is just stunning.
I'm going to Europe in June with some family. Its been a dream of mine since I was very young. Can't wait to see this phenomenal city and the amazing architecture
I live in Vienna (I am Austrian) and I think it is the most beutiful City in Europe.I suggest everyone who wants to see European culture to come to Vienna the center of Europe.

Rick Steve’s is an enticing travell guide indeed. I do not tire watching his videos again and again. They just inspire my sense of wonder and fire my imagination.. I wish I could visit even just one of the European cities he featured.
A city well-worth visiting...try and take the train to Salzburg...wonderful...especially around Christmas time...
Although there are many places in the world I could dream of going to, Austria and Switzerland are the ones I dream of the most. Wonderful video, that, God willing, I shall visit one day.

Nice to see this almost 20 years after taping. I visit Vienna often and i love it there.
I started my trip to Europe last September in Vienna and was glad I saw it. My plans quickly unraveled but after visiting 15 cities in 7 different countries I unexpectedly ended up in Prague which had also once been part of the Austro-Hungarian empire.
Strauss was born there, Mozart lived there a few years - but in an (admittedly thoroughly enjoyable) documentary about one of my favourite cities and arguably the music capital of Europe if not the world, not a mention of the greatest musician of them all - Beethoven. Visit his humble apartment at the Pasqualatihaus in the Inner City, a short walk from the Burgtheater.
I wish America had such culture...

Liberals destroyed whatever culture america had long ago. Multiculturalism is america's culture now.
Yeah it's Liberals that destroyed your culture. Right. Too bad there was never any culture to begin with unless you go back to native times. It's not like colonists were building anything more than what was useful to them. During America's war of independence and the civil war, there was town-torching and iconoclasm to boot to destroy what little there was (i.e. a statue of George III). I'm from NA and we have no culture like this, we never have. We have 3-400 years of history and most of it was nasty, brutish, and short.

Vienna magnificent place to visit Cathedral very spiritual place to pray in for thanks that new widows erected to keep the faith.Palaces and gardens well worth a tour agree with you great historic tour not to miss ,was in the city in the1980s with in friend we did B/b that time good times .Thanks for the well researched tour Rick .

I am Viennese and I live in USA. I don’t know, why I left my beautyful city, but I miss Vienna so much. I wish, I could turn the time back. I hated here so much.

A few things I like to add to Mr. Steves' narrative, which was good as a general historical background for tourists, but still... That popular 'Hungarian uprising' he refers to in the middle of the video, was the 1848-49 Independence War, which the Habsburg forces were unable to defeat on their own. Only by overwhelming military intervention coming from the Russian czar, the Hungarians were finally overcome. The issue with Empress Sissi and her bittersweet story is also deserve to be expanded upon: Perhaps because of the stifling atmosphere in the Hofsburg, or because of her own suffering under the oppressive and tyrannical mother-in-law Princess Sophie, she has sympathized with the plight of Hungarians early on, which led her to became an unofficial advocate, who helped the Austrian - Hungarian Compromise to be accomplished in 1867. Later she enjoyed extended periods of time in that part of her realm, learned that difficult language, and became a through and through friend. Her loving memory is still alive there.
Rick doesnt like to talk too much about one subject or another since that would take away from the learning the traveler would get when they visit. He is trying to make you interested. This is a travel show, not a history show.
Yes I noticed in Budapest there are lots of Sissi mementos, whereas the rest of the ancient monarchy is very much in the background.

booked a hotel room in Vienna for end August. I hope I can make the trip.
We had plans to be in Vienna in May and sadly cancelled due to Covid. We enjoy these shows instead but hope to travel again sometime.

I'm from krakow which was in austro-hungarian empire and I can see some similarities there's also a ring road where the walls used to be and big opera building but everything is on a smaller scale. And from what I see cafe Trzesniewski has been established by Mr. Trzesniewski from Krakow.

I am American and have lived in Europe for 20 years and counting . Vienna is a beautiful city (I live there) But want makes Vienna is it location . From Vienna your hours From Venice ,Prague,Budapest,Munich,Milan and Florence . It a great starting place if your on a 2 week European tour .

reginald burks In my home country we can have several thousand kilometers between two cities and have nearly no cultural differences. Which makes the European style cities so close but so different unbelievable for me.

A nice depiction of Vienna. Note, however, that the Wiener Schnitzel most certainly does not derive from the Piccata Milanese. This is a legend.
The quality of the Sacher Torte (cake) (in the video at minute 3) is also just a legend, Vienna people rarely eat it, as it is quite dry and nothing special, but for the tourists the coffee houses ask for extra high prices, because it is the "Sacher Torte" - haha
Very disappointed with the torte. Quite like the Mozartkugeln though, and the Sissi version.
