    We are zone 7a too TN. I used clear plastic double over mine while being held down with a few water jugs. Mine seems to love to be covered. I always trying to remember to water them before covering them. So far I’ve not used a blanket or hot water bottles and mine were fine. It could be because my plastic is fairly thick. Anyhow here’s to hoping all of our babies survive this last little freeze. Today was day 1 to start conditioning my bales. Woop woop! So excited!

    I winter garden (grow cold tolerant plants all winter in zone 6a) and always notice that the east and north side of my garden beds take more frost damage than the South and West. So I assume that ensuring your water bottles are on those sides would be helpful in protecting your winter sown plants too.

    • @EsthersGardeningAdventures
      @EsthersGardeningAdventures  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a great observation! I imagine that putting the jugs in the areas that you've observed get less frost damage would definitely help.

    I just took my containers into my garage and placed them on towels. I don't have nearly as many containers as you do, but I didn't feel comfortable just covering them this time. Last frost I did cover them, but this time temperatures are dripping to the low to mid 20's here in NY, so I wanted to give them more protection.

BUT! it hurts my soul when someone says not to cover the babies when the temps drop, and to let the weak die. I’m worried sick about my seedlings here in Nh it went down to 17 last night and tonight it’s supposed to be worse! Plus up to 12 inches of snow that is good insulation but I have to let them have light during the day high of 28! But with the sun they will be warmer in their jugs? I hope. I had them under a heavy wool blanket that went on straight from the dryer. And then covered that with 2 more blankets and this morning they were covered in frozen snow sow that was more insulation overnight. So many have germinated that I hate to lose them!

    Hi, Esther! I was thinking about you and had the feeling you’d do a video on this topic. Thank you! Hard to believe we’re going to be way below freezing this evening and the next 3 as well!
    Most of my containers that have seedlings are in an unheated greenhouse (first time using a greenhouse this year) on our deck. I left the other bottles that haven’t sprouted out in the elements. The bottles with pea seedlings are in a cold frame. I will try your tip using hot water in jugs. I’ll place them in the greenhouse and cold frame.
    Let’s hope our seedlings will survive! 🤞

      You only need to cover jugs where you see sprouts. (I cover all of mine to add insulation for sprouted ones but you don't need to) The cold doesn't hurt unsprouted seeds so you should be fine. Just make sure to check for sprouts ahead of a freezing night so you can know whether those containers need to be covered.

    • @EsthersGardeningAdventures
