The Cass Review: Has the Trans Community Been Let Down Again?

  • The recent Cass Review Report, which proposed 32 recommendations on how gender services for children and young people should operate, has highlighted the state of inadequate care provided to young people who faces issues with their gender identity.
In conversation with Katy Jon Went, a social justice campaigner, Chamber UK explored:
    - How this review will affect health professionals' ability to support local citizens
    - How policymakers can ensure that the recommendations are implemented to prioritise the wellbeing of young people
    - How the findings necessitate a reassessment of Labour's policy position.

If gender is a "social construct" then why is there such a push for clinics and organisations that "affirm" a gender? Shouldn't the individual just "construct" their gender and live it?

In an ideal world, yes. But in the real world, people get bullied for not looking like the gender they identify as. When a trans woman enters a public bathroom, there is a high risk that they will be assaulted or even murdered, especially if it’s physically evident that they are trans. Not only that, but a transwoman that had to undergo male puberty will never be able to compete in women sports fairly because their muscle mass has built up too much. If society didn’t care about men looking like men and women looking like women, then appearance wouldn’t be an issue and medical treatment could be avoided. People that transition early are able to develop the physical features of the gender they identify as.

    • @TheNesbittExperience

I think they mean the ROGD kids. It used to be boys and men who identified as trans, but more recently it shot up like 4,000 % in young girls, and that’s the social contagion piece. The pandemic caused them all to go online and they self diagnosed before even seeing a doctor. There is an instance where someone tested this theory and sent in a child, and within 7 minutes, she had a script for testosterone. US doesn’t have a national healthcare program so it’s about money and big pharmaceutical. There are billionaires behind this movement. It’s a classist movement. In boys and men, as Katy said, it’s another conversation. Some are AGP, just a gay kid that hasn’t discovered that yet, or some sort of mental health issue such as anxiety/depression/SA/autism and then went misdiagnosed because psychology and medicine aren’t playing by the rules. Do no harm. In America, we watched it all unfold on a television show, the horrors of GAC. It’s Brave New World and a move towards desensitization through the pernicious obfuscation of language, and eventually, transhumanism.

I don’t know what it’s like to b a transwoman. But I do know what it’s like to be a natal female and how a colposcopy feels, what it’s like to see a 26 yo female die of ovarian cancer, what it feels like to have an ectopic pregnancy burst, what birth control side effects feel like, what a Pap smear is like, what an abortion is like (horrible), what it’s like to go through menopause and post menopausal osteoporosis, but yeah, hormonal drugs mimic PMS and I’m supposed to call a male a woman and if I don’t I’m a hater😆?!?!

Appreciate your optimism, but don't share it. I'm afraid for many young people and families who will be facing very difficult futures. Who will be supporting them when they are 30, 45, 60? Bill Maher points out that if trans is purely a biological reality and not influenced by social contagion, then we would not be seeing regional differences in the prevalence of trans people. But we are! You may go to a school in Los Angeles, and 1/4 of the kids in a class will identify as trans. Go to a school in Ohio, and maybe 0 or 1 out of a class will identify as trans. And don't get me started on these parents with 2 or more trans kids. The odds are astronomical.

Do all 'trans' people think and believe the same things? No variations at all in opinions?
If not, then how are these various ideas and expressions melded into a single view?
Do they have meetings where everyone is included, free to contribute, every person given the same prominence?
Do they have fora, elections and other mechanisms to share opinions etc?
Or do a loud, intolerant minority drown out any ideas they do not like and present themselves as the voices of people they do not represent?

It didn’t need a month. I certainly didn’t want the encouragement of bloody Sainsbury’s. Even when we clearly sought equal pension rights , ability to get a joint mortgage and the ability to bring a same sex partner to a works do, we might be described as a pressure group but we still were not a community.
BTW, we achieved parity before the 20th century ended. My concern is that this could be undone by a generation of entitled , warped, crazies determined to destroy our moderate, affable consensus and ruining young lives into the bargain.

I think we can agree that patience and compassion are useful to bring to a discussion or to a debate. In Chapter Two of On Liberty, John Stuart Mills argues strongly against the silencing of expressing opinions: "He who knows only his side of the case, knows little of that." Meaning, it is essential to understand why others disagree with you, otherwise you risk believing that you are infallible. I think we disagree. Probably 100%. But I listened to the interview.

I would argue that the Affirmative approach has let down trans people. If your process has had severely damaging results for a significant minority of your patients. Then your response should be to study those cases, and to update your criteria for diagnosis and prescription. Not to dismiss, diminish, and demonise reasonable critiques.
On top of the suffering caused by this wilful blindness. There will now be further suffering caused to trans people by a jarring change to the system, which could've been avoided by engaging reasonably with the evidence and course-correcting iteratively.

The audacity to talk about others reading ability when you write the way you do is astounding!
Ive seen you say that in several comments now. Yet you are barely stringing a coherent sentence together and when you do it's misspelt, lacking punctuation, missing words, has spaces where they're not needed and none where they are and the sentence structure is awful too.
If you had just put your point across without name calling and insulting others intelligence we could be here talking about the issues instead of your writing skills.
Nice cat though. I like cats.

Oh my, this is all about stopping puberty in children. Why? So they remain childlike?

@@maureensansburn6413 Girls who `transition` remove their breasts almost as soon as they arrive. Breasts are a significant outward sign of female adulthood. Men masquerading as women often call themselves `girls` despite being middle aged. `Trans girls` often dress like teenagers or in a style from their mothers` youth. I`d say their obsession with puberty blocking connects with these things.
