    What is an earasaid?
    A traditional draped garment found in women's’ Highland Dress, this garment typically consists of two to four yards of tartan material wrapped around the waist and/or shoulders, with some left loose for covering the head. The Earasaid was typically pleated around the waist and held in place with a belt, just like a man's great kilt. Often it was also pinned by a brooch at the chest.
    This utilitarian yet elegant garment came into being in the late 1500's and stayed relatively mainstream until the late 1740's. It emerged from the leine and brat (cloak) that was worn by highland women from the 1300's to 1500's. It was during the early 1500's that the feile mhor (great kilt) or feile breacan (belted plaid) began to emerge and gain popularity among Scottish men. This led to Scottish Highland women designing their own style of belted plaid ... the Earasaid.
    Now the earasaid is enjoying a revival in street fashion, too! Here's a quick and easy guide to putting on the earasaid for your Renaissance Fair trip, SCA event, Pennsic War, Living history event, Celtic festival ... you name it!

      @@scarletpanda4224 That sounds more like a piper's plaid than an earsaid.

    So elegant. A glimpse into the past and a feminine look for the present.

    Been searching for a video like this for a while! I’ve had an earasaid for 2 years now and always had such a hard time and would struggle figuring out how to put it on and found very little resources online until now, thank you!

    Beautiful. I've been wearing the modern kilt for a while, but wanted to try the big kilt... And involve my gorgeous girlfriend in It. :)

    My question is about the construction of an arisaid. What is correct: Are all 4 sides fringed? If no, does an arisaid require sewn hems on all 4 sides? or should it be just the longer sides have sewn hems and the short ends are fringed? Or no sewing and no fringing? I want to know the most common or traditional way. (I am aware for some it is personal taste of what you prefer.)

      Since it much longer than it is wide, the long sides are the selvedges. Fringe on the ends is optional. I don't have fringe on mine. I find it gets in my way. And it's not hemmed at all. Good quality wool won't need it.

    So this wasn't pleated first and put on while lying down?

    • @ChelleLlewes
      @ChelleLlewes หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Not for this style. You CAN do it, although an earsaid is usually much shorter than a breachan. I have worn it that way and nobody complained.

    What is the difference between the great kilt and this one? Can I use it the same way I would a great kilt (use it for shelter, on long hikes and things?)

    • @laurarayburn7138
      @laurarayburn7138 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      These are shorter in length than the men’s great kilts, at least with how they’re sold by USA kilts and because women tend to be smaller, and they traditionally are worn differently and over a dress, as this video shows. It is still an untailored length of cloth, so you should be able to use it the same way. I wear mine as a cross between a kilt and an over skirt, partly because I got a longer one so that I could pleat it.
