  • This is just a first blush look at Bear & Son's Gold Rush Bowie Knife. I give a brief look at the history of Bowie Knives in America and the evolution of the Gold Rush Bowie. I'll go into a more detailed review of this specific knife and a more complete review of the pattern in a later video. You will definitely hear more about this knife and its origins as the Western w49.

    In my youth I had a real thing for Bowies. I got an 8” bladed Sheffield Bowie when I was 10 years old. I started taking it to Scout Camp and it started an arms war! It ended when my friend got a 14” bladed behemoth!

    Western States Cutlery (Boulder, Colorado) started making a bowie knife for the Army during WWII, it was called the Bushman (No. Bx54), with straight guards which later became W49 in their catalog. They also made the L76- Commando, the G46- Shark, the W31-Parachutist and other fighting knives for various branches of service. They changed the name to Western Cutlery in order to gain more business back east some time around 1950. The Platt family owned Western from 1911-1984 when they sold out to Coleman. Coleman-Western continued making some of the line of knives in Colorado and introduced new ones until they sold out to Camillus in 1991 and they moved the machinery to NY. The Bear & Son bowie looks exactly the same as the W49 though evidently a few ounces lighter.
    Forgot to mention the blade steel on the W49 by the 60's was a choice of either stainless or high carbon chrome vanadium. It was also used by some troops during the Vietnam War.

    A very nice knife that I have been on the fence about ordering! Are you satisfied with the overall fit and finish and quality?

    • @KnifeChatswithTobias
      @KnifeChatswithTobias  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m happy I have it. I wish the blade stock was a little thicker at the spine but all in all it’s pretty nice. It’s far from a perfect knife but I like it. If you’re on the fence, I’d say try and get one in hand first, or at least with a decent return policy, just in case.
      I was on the fence for years. I’m glad I jumped off when I did but there were numerous non-knife factors in my decision. No regrets here!

    It’s a cool knife but I wish the blade was 4.5 mm think and an inch longer. And the tip looks a little fragile for a Bowie knife. Also 1095 carbon steel would be nice. These are the things that make me hesitate in buying one. A comparison between this and the cold steel Wild West Bowie would be a good video. It’s more inline with the specs I listed.

    • @KnifeChatswithTobias
      @KnifeChatswithTobias  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I like the blade length but I have to say, 1095 would be a better blade steel option. The 4116 is okay and is a step up from the 420 that Western was using at the end but still...I too would've liked to have seen something a little better.

    Hmm, if the goldrush is built using the old W49 tooling, does that mean the sheath will fit my W49? My sheath on the old girl is wearing out.

    • @KnifeChatswithTobias
      @KnifeChatswithTobias  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Possibly. Check out the measurements I gave during the slide show. These are not the measurements according to the manufacturer but the measurements I got when recording the size with the knife in my possession. Compare it to the measurements of the W49 that you own. Beware that his is very snug sheath so the real issue might be blade thickness!

    • @shadowstalker130666
      @shadowstalker130666 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @KnifeChatswithTobias just got a bear and sons sheath. I can confirm, for anyone curious, that the sheath for the bear and sons bowie does, in fact, fit a W49 bowie perfectly. But snug as it's new, but it seemed that way with the bear and sons bowie too.

  • @janetowens7288

    I like that knife, a good deal for sure. I have had mostly good luck with bear and son folders but on my India stag bowie the bevel grind is very uneven width wise. I don't know what the problem is with them. Negative product reviews from 15 years ago are similiar to ones written today. Luckily it looks like you got a good one.

    • @KnifeChatswithTobias
      @KnifeChatswithTobias  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Depends on how much you enjoy and wanted the stockman. But Western Bowies are really up there in price these days. But a stockman is a more practical carry these days. And let’s face it… most likely, neither knife will save you in a bear attack.

    • @viking7560
      @viking7560 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@KnifeChatswithTobias I can’t remember what I traded for the Western but I got it from an Army buddy who has since passed. So there is the emotional attachment. I likely wouldn’t part with the knife today if I had it despite the value. When I traded it for the UH it was a straight up trade for a new knife I admired but couldn’t afford to buy for cash so I was elated. I still have the knife, carry it and remember the story behind both knives and they along with your post reminded me not only of the knives but of my departed buddy. So thank you for that.
