One of the "secrets" of Traveller is that, in effect, it is made up of many "mini-games" that can be "played" without a ref. You can create characters (yes, who could - in the original version - die in the process), roll up entire planetary systems, build starships, etc etc. And then you could bring all of that prior work straight into the RPG setting without losing any of the effort you had put in.

In Traveller PC's generally start as experienced people, not level 1 cannon-fodder. The "career path" based character generation has always been part of Traveller, and most PC's are in their 30's or 40's when they enter play with a rich background history. T20 is no exception.

Back in the day (late '70s/early '80s) I spent many hours creating sectors, characters, and ships (with High Guard) for Traveller. I still have all my materials (including Azshanti High Lightning).
The big flaw I found in it was the lack of purpose or progression. Aside from money, there wasn't much to play for.

20 like d20 it's often called T20 as a result. Traveller has had a few more than 2.0 versions. :) In order of appearance, Classic (CT), MegaTraveller (MT), Traveller:New Era (TNE), Marc Miller's Traveller (T4), Gurps Traveller (GT), Traveller 20 (T20), Hero Traveller (HT), and soon...Mongoose's Traveller (RRT) and Traveller 5 from Marc Miller (T5).

I like most things Traveller so I'm very glad you reviewed this book. I've met some old original Traveller gamers who think the T20 version is THE BEST one yet. I look forward to you reviewing Traveller5. Another great episode, guys. Keep it up.

Mongoose's Traveller is new system (close to CT though) that is based off of Marc Miller's fore coming T5. T5 should start shipping in just a few days (late this week, early next) and RTT (Riki Tiki Traveller...get the joke?) should be shipping from Mongoose in late Feb or early March.
With Traveller, for the most part, it's not the system that attracts people it is The Imperium setting.

A good suggestion. I have it.
It isn't so much lack of plots, as an overall purpose - a goal. In a game like D&D, you can have max level as a goal, and you gain abilities as you progress. Traveller doesn't work that way.

Another great review. I always wonder if you keep some notes behind the tome you're reviewing. :) I miss the old background though - black looks empty.

Yep- I'm a chemical engineer. I also teach chemistry at a major state university. So the Evil Mastermind thing fits well.

Good review, I'll check it out. I went and snagged Angel on the basis of a previous review and am planning on doing a Dresden Files sort of game with it. Thanks Kurt.

GURPS Traveller has recently become my primary gaming focus. This has led me to pick up other pieces of Traveller from over the years. I'll need to seek this out.
Could there be a Traveller 5 review at some point?

Call of Cthulhu or Unisystem, mainly, although we're about top start playtest for the Dresden files RPG.

Yep. It was strange. Marc Miller was an odd genius.

Nope It's my Comic Shop and since we have a game stores in town, we don't really carry any. We like the back ground at the store but we shoot where ever it works out for both of us.

Hey Kurt, maybe you could review the Mongoose Publishing version of Traveller? I'd be interested to see which one you think is better in your opinion.

I Dungeon and Dragons, so D20 systems are not an issue, but Serenity might be a better choice.
