When I think of an awl, it describes a tool used to punch holes and scribe lines on materials such as metal or wood. The blade tool on Swiss Army Knives is a Reamer tool use to drill into wood and leather to make holes. 🤔
That's why i bought the Leatherman when it first came out, the pliers. They are compact and dont poke you when carrying if you throw it in a pocket. The other tools were okay, but not the main reason i was carrying it. Working in factories, you don’t always have a toolbox nearby. I guess it doesn't matter what we call them. A knife in your pocket is a pocketknife even if it has pliers and other stuff. Semantics. We have words so that people know what we are referring to when we mention an object. If someone wants to call a multi tool a knife, go ahead. Put it this way. If someone asked to borrow a knife and you handed them a multi tool with a knife in it, didn't you give them a knife? In the words of Forged in Fire, "It will cut." 😂
Great video. I usually have my SAK in my pocket and a Victorinox Spirit-X on my belt. It’s just easier to grab the knife for the small stuff and the multi-tool for the stuff a pliers or maybe the chisel can do. It also came with a small ratchet set that is very handy at times.
Even though I don't refer to my multi tool as a "knife", I do use the knife blades on it quite a bit. Especially for doing crappy tasks when I don't want to trash my pocket knife edge. Cheers, buddy!
I actually use the can opener on one of my Leatherman Tools almost everyday. I also keep one in my fishing backpack to use the can opener mostly for carp fishing opening cans of corn. It's also my back-up pliers
As a child of the 70s and 80s, the SAK is pretty much the definitive pocketknife. I thoroughly regret thinking that the "modern pocket knife" was an improvement.
Leaves are falling all around , Thanks to you I'm much obliged, For such a pleasant Video. Ramble on Tobias it's what I love about you man. Sing your song Brother. If I was stuck on a desert Island and all I hade was a metal thing with multiple tools and a Knife Blade, I would call it " Wilson" and every night I would Pray, "This is Wilson, there are many like him, but Wilson is mine. Wilson is my best friend, He is my life, without me Wilson is useless, with out Wilson I am useless. Together we are Survivors. And that's all I have to say about that. Great Video Tobias Thank you.⚔
Interesting topic, I'm not sure I can correctly answer your questions, so I'll just agree with what you said. 👍Thanks for sharing, take care my friend and Cheers!
I pretty much agree with you. Thanks for making me think, now I have to go rest. I had already met my quota for thinking today. Have a great blessed day.
I'm thinking I use three categories also: a knife (single or multi bladed but all sharpened); a Swiss Army (which includes scout, camp, and SAK's from any country); or a Multi-Tool (Leatherman, et al, with large pliers and/or large scissors as main blade) types. Which brings us to the "what ifs". What if , for example, it has a blade and a punch? Certainly not a multi-tool by my thinking...nor a Swiss Army type so to me it's a knife, with a punch or for example a knife with an opener, or a knife with scissors, etc. But once there are two additional tools its a Swiss Army type to my thinking. But that's just categorizing knives for example, by pattern, covers, cover colors, sizes, and the like just for counting. Now I'm confused.
Absolutely agree with you, Tobias. 👍
Yea I agree with you here.
makes sense!
You summed it up rather well.
The one thing that you needed was one with a nomenclature hair splitting attachment.
In 2022, NPR interviewed Tim Leatherman on “How I built this”. It’s worth listening to.
I agree - thanks for making a stand
my 3rd category would me "a knife that's a multitool"

Great minds think alike 😊
I see it the same way. Thanks Tobias!
Completely agree.
Pliers based vs knife with tools built around it
You are correct!
Hey Tobias 👊🏼
Agreed, I second that...
I was hoping to see that Case Sawcut bone, Seahorse Whittler - love that! 😉
Thanks for sharing,
ATB Gus 👍🏻
Great video I agree with you. Great Chanel

lol yes I agree…I always thought of Leatherman or some other brand and I use them mostly to fix fence…and once in a while I use the knife.
So true.

I agree 100% with the way you see it. Great video.
Guess one could ask airport security before boarding🤔
If they like it, they confiscate it and decide what to call it later.
I was expecting a big bowie for some reason. I consider anything with a knife a tool so.....
Totally agree. Multi Tools do not make the knife blade the main tool and is an after thought.

THIS is a knife !!!
I dig that equal end cigar stockman ya got there. One of my fav patterns. What maker is that?

Totally agree with you sir! Off topic here sir but are you gonna pick up a new 2025 case doctors knife sir?
Where’s Trump to say there are only 2! Multi tools and knives! You people are too woke.😂
