In this edition of Tarikh, Nikhil talks about Ibn Battuta. Ibn Batuta was an explorer who travelled extensively throughout Africa and Eurasia. Ibn Battuta travelled more than any other explorer in pre-modern history,. He traveled approximately 117000 kilometer in his 30 years of travel. In 1333 Ibn Battuta came to India and reached Delhi to meet with the Sultan Muhammad Bin Tughlaq. Ibn Battuta later chronicled the life of Durbar and common people of India and once got in trouble due to his relation with a Sultan Critic. Battah means duck in Arabic. Battutah is loving way in which one calls the young one of a duck....young one of duck does not know where to go in water, on its own. It just keeps on wandering depending upon the current of water.

Tangiers (In Arabic, the Moroccans call it Tanjaah. Tangiers is Anglicized form of Tanjaah), ibn Battutah's birth place, is honeymoon capital of Morocco, right on the edge of Bahrain (meaning the point where two huge bodies of water meet each other, Bahr means ocean, Bahrain means two oceans/seas). The water bodies being, Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean sea merge with each other. And one can actually see the merger of these two water bodies across from many points in Tangiers as the densities of both the water bodies is different forming a water barrier. It is on the northern tip of Continent of Africa and one can see Spain (Iberian peninsula) continental Europe across on the other side from Tangiers
