  • The famed Chilean pianist performs Beethoven’s Variations and Fugue for Piano in Eb major, Op. 35. Unknown year, unknown source. Might have been recorded from radio. Do you recognize this performance? If so please comment!
This is one of the earliest reels I have come across in the Marchant collection. The box is quite faded and most interestingly - the magnetic medium is paper backed. You can see how light the tape looks in the reel on the left, compared to all my other videos with dark or red/ochre colored.
3M’s earliest tapes had a paper backing, as opposed to the later plastic/polyester or acetate backing. The earliest plastic backed tape was from 1947 so this tape could be from 1947 or maybe even 1946, though I’m not sure they were made that early. This is likely Scotch 100 or maybe 101 - the only two official tapes that were paper backed according to documentation I’ve found (www.aes.org/aeshc/docs/3mtape.... However, given that Reynolds worked for 3M it wouldn’t surprise me if he was using experimental and unofficial tapes. Unfortunately no information on the box or reel to help.
The quality of this recording is not the best - it’s unclear to me if that is because of the original material (radio?) or the very old tape or some combination. As usually I did some processing to tame the pops and crackles and noise, but not too much to remove dynamics or sparkle from the sound.
Again if you know anything about this performance please share!
    Technical info:
    7” Cine Reel
Unknown Scotch - probably Scotch 100.
    7 1/2 IPS
Used Waves M2 mostly to bring up the super quiet parts (in some cases as loud as the noise floor). Used Waves X-Noise to get rid of background noise and Acon Digital’s DeClick to remove straggling crackle.

He played this in the 40s and 50s, but a few times this work ends the first half of a recital, for example in Edinburgh festival in 1967 and in Bonn, also 1967, so if you have more reels from arrau recitals can be more easy to identify it

I hope I find another one! The announcer at the start and end makes me think it might have been a radio broadcast but it doesn't sound like the other NY Philharmonic recordings I have, and I couldn't find a good match on the NY Phil archive.

I have heard your recording, Maestro Arrau included this set of variations in 1967-68 and 1977. i have some of those 1977 recordings, so i can say it is not Bonn, Bergamo, Brescia or Milan. But, considering the tempo, the pauses, the rythm, and details of your recording i can guess is from 1967-68 cycle. have you any other recording if Arrau on reels?

So far this is the only recording of Arrau but I have hundreds more reels to go through. I really doubt this is from the late 60s given the age of the tape and the quality of the recording,. I think more likely 40s or 50s. The tape box is definitely from the late 40s - I suppose he could have re-used this tape much later but it's not been his approach (so far).

@@MarchantTapeArchivewell, if that is the case, then in 1943 he made an USA tour in which the Eroica Variations was used as final piece of the first part (5 recitals aprox). so, it can be even more interesting, but the only way to identify it is through another recording of the same recital

@@jagareco 1943 would be very cool but before 3M had analog tape or even before reel to reel was really a thing. Maybe it was recorded by someone and broadcast later in the 40s on the radio? A good mystery! I am really excited to see if I have more reels of the Maestro.
