After growing up and constantly getting my rear end played like bongos by this game I have nothing but the highest amount of respect for this man. The style, the stubbornness, and the confidence.
Small funfact about the R in japanese (context I'm learning japanese and lived there for a year): While the letter R is used in romaji (western characters) when writing the reading of kana or kanji, I have no idea who decided to use R as default and not L. The japanese sound is way closer to an L than an R, the perfect pronounciation would be somewhere in the middle (not a rolled R though), but since for me it was always nearly impossible to pronounce I asked my teacher(native) if I could default to just L and she said it's absolutely fine and correct. I also noticed that there is a lot of variation in native japanese speakers when it comes to the pronounciation, many use the ideal middle between R and L, but many also fall somewhere on the range from said middle to full-on L, however it rarely (maybe never) goes in the other direction. So in my humble opinion I think that the japanese R letter should always have been an L. (So to say the japanese only have an L sound and not an R sound, not the other way around). Of course I'm no language professor so there might be a reason behind it defaulting to R (maybe the tongue movement is closer to R or something like that?). Also on a sidenote: I guess that the translators actually made a mistake with "Nelo Angelo". The mentioned katakana are syllable characters generally used to write foreign words (as opposed to the hiragana which contain the same syllables but are used for pure japanese words). However the japanese syllable alphabets don't have single consonants(except n), as a result voals are often added to words when written with katakana. Restaurant for example becomes re-su-to-ra-n. Before I started learning japanese I first thought that might also be the case here and that the Nelo part was just misspelled "neo", so that the name would be "Neo Angel(o)" or "New Angel". However that can't be the case for two reasons: 1. Aye it's Nero Angelo. Even dmc5 refers to him as the "Black Angel" in the enemy reports for the other Angelo's. I suspect the localization uses Nelo Angelo just to differentiate him from Nero. As for ら (ra) while it is somewhere between 'r' and 'l', as I understand it it's actually closest to 'dd'. Like in pudding or buddy.
Meanwhile here me just taking the skips and tricks they show and using them in casual replays. It helps speed things up ( pun wasnt intended but whatever haha)
As an aspiring hack n' slash game designer, this video was very insightful. It was amazing to watch someone so passionate for the game showing off their knowledge and skills. And it was humbling to have the narration helping to explain the underlying philosophies, strengths and weaknesses. As well as covering the advantages, flaws and benefits of both in-game decision making and game design. DMC1 was the first game I ever got to play on PS2 back in the day. 1:08:58 brief fun fact, for the very few that doesn't know that yet, Nero Angelo is Italian and means Black Angel, and is also mistranslated since in Italian (opposite to english and many other languages) adjectives follows the subject and not the other way around (it should had been called Angelo Nero instead) The common opinion is that Kamiya wanted to call him Black Angel and did the extra mile translating it in Italian for extra style points [without any actual plain reason, I mean at least in DMC4 there was an heavy use of latin names but it had sense in the religiuos setting of the game] but didn't know how italian grammar works so he just translated the two words without reversing the order of the words. In the italian translation of the game on PS2 still it was called Nelo Angelo because the translator didn't understood that it was a typo, he thought Nelo Angelo was his actual name
I blasted through the whole series in order one time and never really took the time to master DMC1, this is really cool to see. Also, i didn't know you could stand on Shadow's skewer here! I wondered what the point of that was in V's moveset, makes sense now!

Watching your 100 100% runs is absolutely stunning, and knowing the history of the run makes it doubly entertaining and quadruple the ability to follow along and understand
Max difficulty 100% speedruns are definitely my favorite category for just about any game, especially glitchless runs, to me it's the best way to show one's mastery of the game's mechanics. It's not feasible for some games because it pushes the time to complete to be too long, but if it just so happens that it can be done in less than 3 hours, I feel like that's a perfect category.
Explaining about speed running and the true essence of it starting around 47:00 is what made me give the thumbs up, mad respect to the ones that keep it TRUE. Dank video and basically putting people up on game on principles. That’s if they choose to listen and live by.
I really appreciate the insight on the speedrunning community, I'm not a speedrunner myself, but it's really fascinating all the technics people discover to get the fastest time on a game, and I hope someday I'll be able to submit a run or two on my favorite games

Such a great video and Slickford is insane for doing this. I got much more DMC 1 knowledge here than I thought, not knowing there were so much things that I still didn't know about the game. When I was trying to finish all difficulties and maximizing health and DT gauge on my run in DMC1, I died so much on the DMD difficulty, as it was a huge spike from Hard mode lol. Also you're explanation on how the Nightmare boss fights works, suddenly makes me realize on why I had so much trouble from nightmare in mission 20 lol. I had a hard time due to the constant boomerang attacks, and its maybe because the core that was left was the one on Nightmare's upper back lol

Big fan. Just wanted to touch on M7 SB. On NG+ it is actually possible to SB this mission without the secret mission exploit. Got a recording on my channel, and after that was done another guy (HELIAX 99) also did it. And yes, it's as insanely hard as you talk about. If you're just talking just NG though I don't know - you'd need max DT and you need to be able to kill the Frosts fast losing as little DT as possible. On my todo list to explore and it's not high on that list. EDIT: Listening again, the Kyclops time I got was not under a minute as you say. But was about 1 min 10 seconds. It's not foolproof, but I did see my Kyclops times consistently decrease massively.

i have been stuck on nightmare 1 for like three years on dmd. I have never been able to find any strategy online for beating this guy and this video actually just gave me hop of finally completing the games platinum
Been working on my own "Why DMC is so good" video, when BOOM i learn about DMD and now DMD 100% speedrunning. This game really keeps giving doesn't it??? Also, I really enjoyed listening to how speedrunning this game differs from a normal playthrough. The tricks, tech, and insights on design are something I NEVER would have guessed, or even thought would be relevant. Good vid my guy💪

I wasn’t as big of a fan of his micro series, it’s still a fun watch but his long form stuff is so special, although I wonder if he will ever go back to a souls game in that style? He kind of seemed burned by ds2 to the point that I don’t think he ever made a ds3 video, I think the demons souls and ds1 vids basically covered everything he had to say about what makes those games good, and so he would just be repeating himself in a ds3 video, but I’m not really sure.
As a non-speedrunner, I’ve tended to always find 100%, All bosses”, or other full completion-type runs my preferred types to watch. It depends on the game though of course. These types of runs by their nature tend to have the speedrunner engage much more with the game’s progression, mechanics, and systems. Mastery of the game is displayed by needing to actually play all of it. And I feel there’s a greater connection to the game itself. They also tend to be less optimized/perfectly executed due to their length, so as a viewer a lot more is coming down to the quality of a players skill on that run than performing a specific set of moves to absolute perfection. Any% runs are interesting in seeing the novel ways they’re completed, and the raw skill is still on display, but there’s a much greater element of avoiding the game as much as possible. I find the methods more interesting than the runs themselves. They feel a bit more detached from the actual game that’s being played. I feel like they’re more interesting in the context of the analysis of a dexterity puzzle than of a game. Though with Any% it largely depends on the type of game and the various skips/glitches that may be available to runners. The iconic Mario 64 Any% speedrun for instance feels more like watching a single challenge level than watching someone beat the game really fast.
Some speedrunners love their games, some play it to show skill, but there are other bunch that will practice 2 or 3 glitches to put their names in the leaderboard and claim a WR in youtube when not facing the hardest categories. Far from the days where speedrunning was mainly about skill and mastering a videogame, now is all about the glitches + skip to the credits= profit. That's why the dream of having a community around races in the format of fighting games will have a hard time finding people willing to compete cause most are just glitching and Rolling the credits to even care to be in a bracket against the best of the best. Not in the dmc or speedrunning scene but am in the gaming scene and love to see the passion, blood, sweat and tears. Also who doesn't love dmc tho? Watched the whole thing, had a blast!
That's not how speed running works though. Most communities support each other and are pretty happy when records are broken. Plus 20 years means whoever got it probably doesn't really care anymore. I'm 32 now if I got this record at 12 I wouldn't give a flying shit if anyone broke it. I would have long moved on with my life already lol. This game isn't exactly a pinnacle of speedrunning like the bigger speedrun games. So holding a record here isn't what anyone would call a holy grail. Still very impressive but the lack of runners means it's a lot easier to break a record and hold it for extended periods of time. And I mean lack of runners even when it was new. For obvious reasons a very linear on rails action game doesn't really do well in terms of entertainment and bringing in big numbers of runners.
The ending with it being synced to the music and the editing you've done are absolutely fantastic. It gives a brief glimps into how much effort goes into a run like this. Retrying over and over and over and over [...] until it finally happens. Mad respects to Slickford for completing this challenging and truly insane run. And mad respects to you Waifu for making such a nice comprehensive explaination with a Mundus fight to go down into the history books of god-tier presentation.
WOW! This takes me back... Back to 2009-10, when I completed my Special Bonus runs on Normal, Hard, and DMD, on the PAL PS2 version. But... despite what you said at 10:50, I managed to get the Special Bonus on each and every mission on each of the difficulties. I even still have the photos after each mission with my results! XD I'll finish watch this run later, enjoying it. Because I know the pain of trying to SB DMC1 and SS DMC3... It's a science on its own... EDIT: I should have watched more before commenting lol, because you specify that some of those SB are unattainable because of the much more stringent time limits of a speedrun. Time requirements for a S rank are stringent, but not as harsh as in a speedrun. And it's worth mentioning that this is all done in a SINGLE segment, while I had the "luxury" of retrying every mission how many times I wanted till I got the SB. So kudos to the speedrunner!
I was today days old when I found out that is how you were supposed to do the one shot Sin Scissor mission. I had done it, but didn't understand it was the gun in the face that caused it and would just try to clash blast and pray.
I would love to see you do a nightmare only challenge run the rules are the only gun you can use is nightmare beta (obviously) and the first attack of ifrit (a nightmare punch if you will) also fun fact nightmare beta boosts any attack that is left handed you can in fact use this to skillfully one shot hallway phantom
watching this and still not seeing people do the stinger and helm splitter on the lizards leads me to think only a few know that those will instakill them
There are blade crits in here. On 10. Not a good idea to go for it on 2. You can do it on 9 but I'm also trying to move quickly and collect the blue orb fragment. Take the opportunity if it presents itself, but it doesn't always work out the way one would prefer. Enemies don't like to cooperate very much and taking a single hit can kill a run at that point.
I just realized dmc speedruns are a perfect Analogy for striving for anything. Some give up at just give up after a path of dull, cool or badass, but those who make it see that every day and push past to prove their worth. Most see these players and ranks as insurmountable but really theyre just easily discouraged. dont believe in their own capabilities. a lot of speedrunners are malnourished or arent geniuses. Its your dedication, not your physical or mental capability.
I like your analogy about speed-running. I have found myself at times hitting a wall where I can no longer progress. If this goes on for too long I play something else.
THe Bangle of Time in DMC1 stops time completely for all non-boss enemies, they are frozen to the point where all damage you deal to them is stacked and won't register for the enemy until time is unfrozen, so you can get some pretty hilarious effects if you freeze time, beat up on em for a bit then unfreeze. It's a fun lil item but isn't going to help much, as the DT cost is insane and since enemies won't die until you unfreeze, you can't speed up any rooms with it.
There's some leeway with Nelo Angelo, but I haven't played around with it too much, possibly a bug for all I know. You can't stack damage either, only the last hit damages him.
@@afatchimp that sounds like a bug. In boss battles, the bangle is supposed to activate for a few seconds, but the boss will be unaffected, and the bangle then turns off on its own.
I spent the whole video thinking to myself, "I know it's been ages since I've played Devil May Cry 1, but wasn't his name 'Nelo Angelo?' why does he keep saying 'Nero Angelo?'" So thanks for adding the fun fact about the translation error that came about with his name, it's something I would've never found myself looking into so it was cool to learn... I'll probably still call him "Nelo Angelo" though, cause I think "Nelo" sounds cooler. 😂
While I understand that the "correct" name would be "Nero Angelo" and this was likely a mistake on the part of the translators, the simple fact of the matter is that "Nelo Angelo" is his official name. That's what he is called in game and in all future references such as cross overs like Project X Zone and Teppen. This isn't the first time nor the last time Capcom's translators make this mistake and it remains cannon. For example, in DMC4 the first boss is named "Berial" however this was likely supposed to be "Belial" which is the name of a demon in Jedo-Christian mythology. Outside of DMC there is a character in the Mega Man X series called Alia, given the Mega Man franchises history of naming characters after musical references this name was likely supposed to be "Aria" which is a type of music. Regardless of the "mistakes" Nelo Angelo, Berial, and Alia remain these character's official names.

EDIT: Listening again, the Kyclops time I got was not under a minute as you say. But was about 1 min 10 seconds. It's not foolproof, but I did see my Kyclops times consistently decrease massively.

i have been stuck on nightmare 1 for like three years on dmd. I have never been able to find any strategy online for beating this guy and this video actually just gave me hop of finally completing the games platinum

I wasn’t as big of a fan of his micro series, it’s still a fun watch but his long form stuff is so special, although I wonder if he will ever go back to a souls game in that style? He kind of seemed burned by ds2 to the point that I don’t think he ever made a ds3 video, I think the demons souls and ds1 vids basically covered everything he had to say about what makes those games good, and so he would just be repeating himself in a ds3 video, but I’m not really sure.
As a non-speedrunner, I’ve tended to always find 100%, All bosses”, or other full completion-type runs my preferred types to watch. It depends on the game though of course.
These types of runs by their nature tend to have the speedrunner engage much more with the game’s progression, mechanics, and systems. Mastery of the game is displayed by needing to actually play all of it. And I feel there’s a greater connection to the game itself.
They also tend to be less optimized/perfectly executed due to their length, so as a viewer a lot more is coming down to the quality of a players skill on that run than performing a specific set of moves to absolute perfection.
Any% runs are interesting in seeing the novel ways they’re completed, and the raw skill is still on display, but there’s a much greater element of avoiding the game as much as possible. I find the methods more interesting than the runs themselves.
They feel a bit more detached from the actual game that’s being played. I feel like they’re more interesting in the context of the analysis of a dexterity puzzle than of a game.
Though with Any% it largely depends on the type of game and the various skips/glitches that may be available to runners.
The iconic Mario 64 Any% speedrun for instance feels more like watching a single challenge level than watching someone beat the game really fast.
Some speedrunners love their games, some play it to show skill, but there are other bunch that will practice 2 or 3 glitches to put their names in the leaderboard and claim a WR in youtube when not facing the hardest categories. Far from the days where speedrunning was mainly about skill and mastering a videogame, now is all about the glitches + skip to the credits= profit.
That's why the dream of having a community around races in the format of fighting games will have a hard time finding people willing to compete cause most are just glitching and Rolling the credits to even care to be in a bracket against the best of the best.

Not in the dmc or speedrunning scene but am in the gaming scene and love to see the passion, blood, sweat and tears. Also who doesn't love dmc tho? Watched the whole thing, had a blast!

That's not how speed running works though. Most communities support each other and are pretty happy when records are broken. Plus 20 years means whoever got it probably doesn't really care anymore. I'm 32 now if I got this record at 12 I wouldn't give a flying shit if anyone broke it. I would have long moved on with my life already lol. This game isn't exactly a pinnacle of speedrunning like the bigger speedrun games. So holding a record here isn't what anyone would call a holy grail. Still very impressive but the lack of runners means it's a lot easier to break a record and hold it for extended periods of time. And I mean lack of runners even when it was new. For obvious reasons a very linear on rails action game doesn't really do well in terms of entertainment and bringing in big numbers of runners.
Devil May Cry is one of my favorite games that I revisit every few years..... Just learned today you can kill that electric bird in the Griffon fight

WOW! This takes me back... Back to 2009-10, when I completed my Special Bonus runs on Normal, Hard, and DMD, on the PAL PS2 version. But... despite what you said at 10:50, I managed to get the Special Bonus on each and every mission on each of the difficulties. I even still have the photos after each mission with my results! XD
I'll finish watch this run later, enjoying it. Because I know the pain of trying to SB DMC1 and SS DMC3... It's a science on its own...
EDIT: I should have watched more before commenting lol, because you specify that some of those SB are unattainable because of the much more stringent time limits of a speedrun. Time requirements for a S rank are stringent, but not as harsh as in a speedrun. And it's worth mentioning that this is all done in a SINGLE segment, while I had the "luxury" of retrying every mission how many times I wanted till I got the SB. So kudos to the speedrunner!

I was today days old when I found out that is how you were supposed to do the one shot Sin Scissor mission. I had done it, but didn't understand it was the gun in the face that caused it and would just try to clash blast and pray.

I would love to see you do a nightmare only challenge run the rules are the only gun you can use is nightmare beta (obviously) and the first attack of ifrit (a nightmare punch if you will) also fun fact nightmare beta boosts any attack that is left handed you can in fact use this to skillfully one shot hallway phantom

There are blade crits in here. On 10. Not a good idea to go for it on 2. You can do it on 9 but I'm also trying to move quickly and collect the blue orb fragment. Take the opportunity if it presents itself, but it doesn't always work out the way one would prefer. Enemies don't like to cooperate very much and taking a single hit can kill a run at that point.

I just realized dmc speedruns are a perfect Analogy for striving for anything. Some give up at just give up after a path of dull, cool or badass, but those who make it see that every day and push past to prove their worth. Most see these players and ranks as insurmountable but really theyre just easily discouraged. dont believe in their own capabilities. a lot of speedrunners are malnourished or arent geniuses. Its your dedication, not your physical or mental capability.

THe Bangle of Time in DMC1 stops time completely for all non-boss enemies, they are frozen to the point where all damage you deal to them is stacked and won't register for the enemy until time is unfrozen, so you can get some pretty hilarious effects if you freeze time, beat up on em for a bit then unfreeze. It's a fun lil item but isn't going to help much, as the DT cost is insane and since enemies won't die until you unfreeze, you can't speed up any rooms with it.
There's some leeway with Nelo Angelo, but I haven't played around with it too much, possibly a bug for all I know. You can't stack damage either, only the last hit damages him.
@@afatchimp that sounds like a bug. In boss battles, the bangle is supposed to activate for a few seconds, but the boss will be unaffected, and the bangle then turns off on its own.

So thanks for adding the fun fact about the translation error that came about with his name, it's something I would've never found myself looking into so it was cool to learn... I'll probably still call him "Nelo Angelo" though, cause I think "Nelo" sounds cooler. 😂
Just awesome Devil's May Cry! Just glad to see it actually done!
While I understand that the "correct" name would be "Nero Angelo" and this was likely a mistake on the part of the translators, the simple fact of the matter is that "Nelo Angelo" is his official name. That's what he is called in game and in all future references such as cross overs like Project X Zone and Teppen.
This isn't the first time nor the last time Capcom's translators make this mistake and it remains cannon. For example, in DMC4 the first boss is named "Berial" however this was likely supposed to be "Belial" which is the name of a demon in Jedo-Christian mythology. Outside of DMC there is a character in the Mega Man X series called Alia, given the Mega Man franchises history of naming characters after musical references this name was likely supposed to be "Aria" which is a type of music.
Regardless of the "mistakes" Nelo Angelo, Berial, and Alia remain these character's official names.
