I love how you break down like everything!! From tool to spiritbox some of my favourites from the O'Keefe music school!! Thank you so much you're voice is amazing.
Hey, just some scientist here :) The capability of her doing it is basically given through here genes. I explain it with a simple question: Would you get intimitaded (hope i wrote it right) by her if she would build up on front of you with THAT voice screaming at you? Kinda cool she "unlocked" one of here superior primal abilities.
Your reactions/explanations are so good. With 99% of channels like this, I get into the song and then when it's paused, I end up getting a bit annoyed as nothing of value is said but it's not the case with your channel. You make me appreciate the performance more.... Thanks :)
Courtney is so fu***** amazing, her Voice Sounds so Fragile (Goosebumps) but in a sec she is so hard but also get this fragile tones in it, this is fu***** amazing.
I never like watching vocal coach reactions cause I can never tell who is an actual like trained coach and who isn't, but the way you mimic the notes you find interesting so flawlessly really reassures me. Subscribed!
Would LOVE to hear more of your comments regarding harsher vocals! Courtney here does so many tightly controlled techniques with her mouth to help her create particular resonances in her vocal that I was totally sure you'd pick up on and wax lyrical about, because she's exceptional at this. More please Beth!

Glad you finally got to this one! Courtney and Spiritbox are amazing. ps, you could have Melissa Cross back for another (longer?) talk anytime. She's awesome. xD
I highly recommend doing a video reacting to their song Constance as well! It doesn't have any screaming but it's a beautiful song on a really heavy subject, Alzheimer's. Fun fact about this song title, Rule of Nines is actually a medical term used to estimate the size of a burn!
Sweet mother of god !!! I been wating so long for this video ,love Courtney's body posture second before she start to screaming , is like "hummm ok who wanna fight ?"
Courtney’s screams are so powerful and seem so effortless, I don’t even understand what’s happening. I know she’s been doing this a long time, but how can someone be this good?
I think you would enjoy Spiritbox's song, "The Mara Effect." The live version at Silverside Sound is great. It's 15 minutes long, but it's well worth it.
I like this version much better than the album/video version. This is one i have saved because with the vocal emphasis there is just so much more depth from her, and the emotion.
1) Thank you for taking a look at one of the most exciting metal singers of today. Courtney is definitely a force to be reckoned with. 2) More of her vocal ability can be seen in other one-take videos, although I would instead recommend checking out the band's live performance at Liquid Metal, it's more of a natural live habitat, and that's where Courtney really shines. 3) I'm glad you noticed the fact that in her screams she constantly flips between clean notes and distorted ones, which is an indication of her using the technique known as "false chord" screaming, something akin to what Chester Bennington of Linkin Park used for the most part - the scream itself is clean singing with a huge amount of distortion "on demand" under it - and getting control over it is what enables these flips (a good example of that is Linkin Park singing QWERTY at Summer Sonic 2007).
Nice surprise to see this, I was sure she would have seen Courtney already. There are several other performances worth watching. The Beauty of Suffering? I only really got into Spiritbox about a month ago, but now I can't wait for their new album.
What’s especially cool about Courtney is to compare this to the original studio take. A lot of those subtle touches you were talking about were probably improvised. Always awesome when someone feels confident enough to mix it up a bit and can pull it off while maintaining the feel of the song.
I like that she has a lot of voice mixed in in her harsh lines. Btw I'd love to see you react to OTEP as she was a pioneer among female harsh vocalists
so with her screams. They are indeed a Mix, The Base of her screams are Pitched Fry which utilizes some voice, but as she's pushing with a strong diaphragm, and projecting her voice with alot of airflow, naturally some of her Falsecords also begin to rattle around from the Compression added and power behind it which add another layer of distortion and thicker tonality. So it's a mix of Fry and Falsecord. I'm a metal vocalist myself and tend to do the same techniques. I have a few vocal covers on my channel which utilize pretty much the same techniques to varying degrees.
@@bongzilla4172 yes, the new song's vocals i ok, but If she react to bloodsport (from the room below) or one of the heavy songs, it would be interesting.
Beth, I just watched a video a couple days ago in which Courtney was describing how she started to do the harsh scream/growl vocals. She said that after she heard a band with similar vocals as a teenager, she just started to try to sing that way in the band she was in at the time with her brother, but the funny part was their sound system was so bad, she could hardly hear herself so she wasn't sure exactly what she sounded like and she only sang at band practices and gigs and did not practice at home. She did relate that her throat would hurt a little after doing the harsh vocals, which she initially thought was just part of that type of singing, but the discomfort went away when she learned better technique. She also said that she started to cup the microphone with two hands and her index fingers just above the rim of the mic which allowed her to hear her voice a little better and protected her teeth/mouth from trauma if someone bumped into her (which apparently happened more than once). In addition to the change in hand placement, she related that she got into the habit of positioning her arms directly in front of her to protect her from guys trying to grab her boobs, which also apparently happened more than once (as a male, I can confirm that guys are pigs, but that crosses way over the line!)
Welcome to the world of Spiritbox. With this song in the singing parts, she’s trying to mimick the recorded version. When they tracked it, they did all the harsh vocals first, which made the rest sound light and tired.
Courtney is an amazing vocalist and also a very active voice for women in metal. She's been doing a podcast, "Good for a Girl," where she interviews women both in bands and in the label/management side of metal. Super down to earth. If you want more of them, I second the requests for their performance of "Blessed Be" on SiriusXM. "Constance" is also an extremely emotional song by them, if you feel like crying.

Agree 100%. Circle with me is amazing.

Crazy that this song isn't even on the album!
new stuff is garbage
Her scream of "premonition" near the end is one of my favorites right now. Just brutal.

Circle me is a little more simple, but a banger nevertheless :)

This band has yet to release a single song that isn't a banger. She's one of the neatest metal vocalists at it right now
Yes. Her and Adrienne from Seven Spires are the 2 that are really getting bigger right now.
