    A simile is a type of metaphor, according to the Oxford Companion to the English Language. The confusion is that there are actually two definitions of metaphor, one that includes simile as a subspecies and one that does not. So if you learned that metaphor and simile are different, you're not wrong either! But for the purposes of this video, I'm using the definition that does include similes. Here's an article that helps to explain this more: www.litcharts.com/literary-devices-and-terms/metaphor

    • @adamusement

      Actually, I am sorry to say, but it is neither metaphor nor simile. Here Shrek is using the onion in a more scientific than a poetic mode; he is explaining a complex idea about ogres using the onion as a model. This renders his explanation an analogy, which is not a metaphor and not even figurative. :-)

    • @oosakasan
      @oosakasan 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@adamusement Similes and analogies are the same thing. Your separation of "poetic" and "scientific" mode is completely artificial, and the words "simile" and "metaphor" (and "analogy" for that matter; "model" I'll agree is a more specific scientific usage) are used to describe the relevant entities in a variety of contexts, and notably in the context of discussing language itself (which is the context we're in here).

    Another thing you didn’t mention is how Lin also uses the absence of rap as a metaphor. Notice how in the entire musical one of the only main characters that doesn’t rap is Eliza. The original actress for Eliza has even mentioned it, everyone else tries to get as many words in as possible but Eliza takes her time. She has these ballads and she draws out the words to symbolize the fact that everyone else doesn’t have enough time, but Eliza? She has time. She’s like the counter to Alex’s non-stop behavior and I️ think it’s beautiful how they show that

    A couple things to add:
    1. Rap is also used as a metaphor of sharing similar mindset. Hamilton tells Angelica “You’re like me” so they’re similar and they both rap skillfully. However, Eliza never raps bc although she loves Hamilton, she is not like him.
    2. Period literalism is also (kind of) used when Jefferson first comes on scene and he sings a Rag Time song which, compared to rap, is out of date. He’s been in France so he’s out of date and out of touch with everyone in America

    i dont know if youve mentioned it before, but i think another couple cool metaphors in hamilton's style of music lie in king george singing very poppy love ballads (being sort of out of touch with the cool "hip-hop" thd youngsters are using these days) and thomas jefferson's opening song being a jazz tune (since he "basic'lly missed the late eighties")

      Yes he did but still thank you for the comment. Only by stressing it in that context you opend my eyes to yet another hidden layer of meaning: namely I now see the link that the "late 80s" not only refer to the 1780s but additionally to the 1980s where hip-hop had its breakthrough - omg I wonder how many layers there still are to be discovered :D

In my country no one really knows Hamilton,it's not famous here(maybe it's because we don't speak english and we are not really into musicals),so i found out about it like...2 months ago.And oh my god,your videos just made me love this show and Lin-Manuel even more.I heard that in America you are really divided about it?Like,some people love it and some hate it?I get that people don't like rap and history,and Lin put these things together,yeah,but i just wonder if these people really listened to the songs,like,REALLY listened to them. To me it just works and your videos told me why.

    Another example of musical literalism in Hamilton is the use of 17th century basso continuo with a harpsichord in Seaburry's and King George's parts. It's actually supposed to be anachronistic even for the 18th century and symbolizes the conflict between 17th century baroque monarchism and 18th century enlightment.

    • @HowardHoMusic
      @HowardHoMusic  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      "Metaphor" is not just a sentence that uses "is" instead of "like." I know we were taught that in school, but that's only the tip of the iceberg. For example, when music represents an emotion, there is no sentence saying "music is love"...it just happens, and we understand that's the comparison. That's because metaphor can also refer to any type of poetic comparison, which also includes similes.
