    Hi Folks, my build techniques improved a lot after this first build. I've now made ten! The Lidl Spitfire build linked here is a much cleaner tidier build and I recommend you check that one out before watching this one. It's better than this video! th-cam.com/video/N-z45QNjyZ8/w-d-xo.htmlsi=Kwn1WIn-4_-II_dl

      You're welcome mate. It's hard to find Lidl gliders, they are only instore for a short while around May June but check out the latest one I just put on my channel, the Wish glider is much the same thing and cheap. I was hoping this might encourage people to have a go at building/converting!

    I found running the bend under hot water and getting it close by hand for a start works.
    Heat again and just put a heavy book on it for a bit. Then use packing tape to apply tension to the underside of the wing and then cut and glue in small carbon spar across the bend point and remove the tape. Or just leave it with only the tape, I have done both methods on several conversions now.

  • @loc4725

    Nice build. A few points though:
    1. I'd have used Gorilla glue when flattening out the dihedral; it expands, is light and works well with foam.
    2. Personally I'd have installed the wing servos on their side.
    3. Be careful with the unbranded yellow ESC's that sometimes get supplied with cheap motors. I've found the two I have to be *grossly* overrated; they claim 30A but can't go above 24A implulse without becoming dangerously hot. What they would be like under 24A continuous I don't know; I don't want a fire.
    4. The CoG seems to be between spot on and slightly tail heavy, at least on my AliExpress example. I'd suggest marking that with a CoG sticker before working on the model and using it as a reference later when determining the ideal CoG for powered flight.

      Hi Loc, thanks for the comments. That was in fact my first Lidl conversion. I've done 7 more since! Check out this, my Lidl Spitfire. A pretty Lidl and a much neater build which many changes. th-cam.com/video/N-z45QNjyZ8/w-d-xo.html Lots of changes in my build techniques, you'll see.
      It's all a learning process. I've built twin motor, biplane, twin boom, Vulcans, even EDF and in my later builds I installed main spar servos from underneath with just the servo arms poking through the top surface. Much neater. Re ESC's I've used a couple of the cheap yellow esc's and so far not had any probs and I always err on the side of caution and go bigger, plus I usually check current draw with my meter to see how many amps the motor/prop are drawing at full chat. Never used Gorilla glue, but must get hold of some but later builds - check out my Lild Spitfire, very recent, where I cut the slot under the wing and it looks much neater! I usually use the metal geared servos now too. That first build was pretty round compared to later builds! CoG, most opinion is around the 55 mm. My latest has slightly swept back wings and I've had to adjust for that. Still yet to maiden it.

      @@bobflyman Hi Bob,
      That's interesting. I quite like home built models, especially at the moment given the weather so I'll take a look. As for the yellow / unbranded ESCs, they are probably fine for models you're not to worried about losing and they do seem to work OK at lower amperages. Probably not a problem given how cheap the glider is!
      Just one question, do you know when Lidl tends to get these back in stock? Just that I think I'm going to get some more. 🙂

    Hi! great video, I'm looking to do a conversion myself as well. Why do you flatten the dihedral? Also, what cheap but decent radio and receiver do yo recommend? Thanks

    • @bobflyman
      @bobflyman  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not essential to flatten the dihedral, I guess it means you can cut bigger/longer ailerons. If you leave them it'd be easier to fly. Self levelling with dihedral. I only went to 2.4 ghz transmitters recently and bought a FlySky. Well pleased with it. 20 model memory, range more than enough. Great price , actually £45 now though. Most people use left hand throttle. Mode 2 that is. It's one of the cheapest you'll find and rx's are about £8 a time. My video is here th-cam.com/video/S6A7q8bm74I/w-d-xo.html Check it out! Have fun mate.

    • @bobflyman
      @bobflyman  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Depends quite a lot on how heavy your build is. Like if you put carbon in wings and fusi etc.. I used a Racestar BR2204 on a lightweight one. no carbon. 3 blade 5045 prop. And an A2212 /6T 2200kv on a heavy one. 7x5e 2 blade prop. The latter is dead cheap! Both easy to find online.

      I know it's been a long time since the question. But I had gentle lady and lectrfied it. 480 size motor about 1000kv. 3 cell 9*7 folding prop. That had very strong comb but not fast. When in doubt about motor choice for custom job look for a similar model from horizon or hobbyking and see what motor that plane comes with. Horizon has 2 meter glider uses 480 size.
